VIDEO: Chris Harris drives the 991 GT3

991 Porsche 911 GT3

“The steering is superb… I just feel more connected.”

“Comfortably the best PDK that Porsche has ever made.”

They’re two comments worth taking away from Chris Harris’ exclusive review of the new Porsche 911 GT3. It’s worth noting that this is not a final production-spec car, but with almost 20,000km showing on the dials it is a GT3 that’s been worked hard over its very short life.

Electronic steering and the lack of a manual gearbox are two of things lounge room experts are lamenting about the latest version of the iconic GT3. Harris touches on both with his usual candour. He also covers what is lost or gained with the new 9A1-based 3.8 litre engine over the much-loved Metzger from previous generations.

You’ll enjoy this review, at least you should! And thanks, as always, to Drive for making their content so accessible.

An early look at the 2014 Porsche LMP1

2014 Porsche LMP1 testing at Weissach

On the day Sebastian Vettel extended his deal with the Red Bull F1 team it is quite fitting that the first official photos of Mark Webber’s new car have been published by Porsche today.

Porsche works driver Timo Bernhard was at the wheel for the first test session in the 2014 Porsche LMP1, which took place at the company’s Weissach test facility. Although the timing of the run, so close to the 24 Hours of Le Mans, is coincidental Porsche says.

“We are well on schedule,” says Fritz Enzinger, who heads up the LMP1 program for Porsche. “Our newly formed team has worked with utmost concentration on getting this highly complex vehicle on the track as soon as possible. This allows us a few additional weeks for more testing and further development. From 2014, the regulations are primarily based on efficiency. This makes the competition amongst engineers more interesting and presents us with completely new challenges.”

Highlighting its commitment to the chase for outright success at Le Mans and in the World Endurance Championship, Porsche says it has assembled a team of 200 employees to help achieve its goals.

“I’m very proud that I was the one to take our baby through its first paces today,” said Bernhard. “Already now the car feels great. I look forward to testing the vehicle in the coming weeks and months with my friend and colleague Romain Dumas.”

Porsche Rennsport Australia Festival 2013

Porsche Rennsport Festival Australia 2013

Porsche held their Rennsport Festival at Sydney Motorsport Park a couple of weekends back. There were over 400 cars in attendance. If you didn’t get along to the event here’s a short video showing what you missed out on. If you did go along, please tell us more in the comments section below.

Great racing. Great cars. Great Porsche spirit. This sums up the Porsche Rennsport Australia Motor Racing Festival. Porsches old and new, from road and track, local and international, together with famous faces and enthusiasts filled Sydney Motorsport Park on the May 25–26 weekend in celebration of all things Porsche. This video provides a taste of the superb on-track action from a record number of competing Porsche cars, including the first Porsche Carrera Cup Australia ‘pro/am’ endurance races, Porsche historic sports car races and historic Porsche demonstrations including the factory’s own 1981 Le Mans-winning Porsche 936 and the 2005/6 class-winning American Le Mans Series LMP2 Porsche RS Spyder, along with a host of off-track activities to entertain the record crowd over the sunny weekend.

Isn’t that nice

MINI congratulates Porsche

In a rare show of inter manufacturer love BMW has passed on an official note of congratulations to Porsche for the 50th anniversary of the 911. They’ve done so as stewards of their own 50-year-plus icon the Mini/MINI.

There’s a full statement and more pics from BMW after the break, but this paragraph gets to the heart of the message:

It’s tempting to wonder how different history would have been without the creators of these two successful cars. Neither Sir Alec Issigonis nor Ferdinand Alexander Porsche had any inkling that their designs would come to be considered immortal icons of modern times. Indeed, you would have needed a very clear crystal ball to see that Porsche had just dreamt up the most successful sports car of all time and Issigonis the “world’s only cool small car”.

BMW also makes reference to that questionable MINI v Porsche publicity stunt at Road Atlanta back in 2010.

Porsche 911 50th Anniversary Edition revealed

Porsche 911 50th anniversary edition

Porsche has said happy birthday to its iconic 911 with this special 50th Anniversary Edition. Based on the 911 Carrera S it’s powered by a 294kW 3.8 litre flat six (increased to 320kW for the US market) and adorned with model specific 911 50 badging.

It will be presented to the public for the first time at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show in September, 50 years after the very first 911 debuted at the same event.

Other notable features of the 911 50 are its wide body, taken from the Carrera 4, and retro-inspired treatments to the rear engine cover and Fuchs-like 20″ alloy wheels. The retro theme is carried inside, too, with green lettering on the main dash cluster and a pattern reminiscent of the original Pepita tartan on the electric leather seats.

Available in a flat black and two unique exterior colours—graphite grey and geyser grey metallic—the 911 50 is described as a limited edition, although no detail is given in the press release below as to the number of cars to be made.

The video after the break features a graphite grey 911 50 and an original 911 in the same colouring. The 991 is fantastic, of course, but that old skool 911 makes us go weak at the knees; it just looks so perfect.

The Porsche 912 is beautiful

1967 Porsche 912

We love old Porsches here at AUSmotive and this superbly presented 912 has only heightened our appreciation. This 1967 model is currently up for grabs via eBay in the US, although you only have a few hours left to place a bid.

There are over 70 images of this car after the break and we expect your admiration of the 912 will grow after you’ve seen them. Being an otherwise lowly four-cylinder, compared to the six-cylinder 911, we love the 912’s underdog status.

This is a car we’d love to own. Indeed, a classic car, of any kind, is something all car lovers should indulge themselves in if the opportunity presents.

[Thanks to Craig for the tip]

UPDATE 4 June: Looks like the car was sold with a winning bid of US$33,850.

2013 Nürburgring 24 hour race in pictures

Porsche at the 2013 Nurburgring 24 hour race

If you didn’t follow the 2013 Nürburgring 24 hour race over at AUSringers on Monday here’s your chance to catch up, pictorially at least. After the break you’ll find a huge gallery of photos with thanks to Aston Martin, Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche.

In the end, thanks to heavy rain and fog during the night session the race was red flagged. Around nine hours were lost in total, and while that was a shame, the race still provided all the drama and excitement you would expect from a 24 hour race around the Green Hell.

For the record the #9 Black Falcon Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 won the race. At the wheel was Bernd Schneider, Jeroen Bleekemolen, Sean Edwards and Nicki Thiim. Amazingly it was the first ever Nürburgring 24 hour race win for Mercedes-Benz and Bernd Schneider. Indeed, after several attempts it was the first time that Schneider had finished the race.

And how good does the RSR look in raw carbon fibre!

Porsche gives the 918 Spyder more, but is it enough?

Porsche 918 Spyder prototype

Porsche invited a select group of journalists to its Leipzig factory to bring them up to speed on the progress of 918 Spyder. Previously its weight was reported as being over 1700kg, now it’s claimed to be 1640kg. Before it had less than 800hp, now Porsche says there’s 887hp (660kW) to play with. It’s faster, too, so the claims suggest.

Project leader Frank-Steffen Walliser says Porsche isn’t responding to the gauntlets thrown down by the more powerful and faster rivals—LaFerrari (708kW) and McLaren P1 (675kW), but it’s hard not to draw any other conclusions. Yet, if Porsche wants to claim hybrid hypercar performance supremacy they still have a lot of work to do.

Porsche says the 918 can reach 300km/h in 23 seconds flat. That’s fast. But compared to the LaFerrari (15.0 seconds) and the P1 (sub 17 seconds) it is positively pedestrian.

More in depth analysis of the 918 has been given by Chris Harris (video after the break) and Autocar.

In his review for Autocar Greg Kable said: “With sufficient battery charge in E-Power mode, the Porsche relies on the front electric motor to provide propulsion at speeds of up to 93mph—which makes this Porsche’s first front-wheel drive car.

“Before the first lap is over I’m already gushing at the razor-sharp throttle response, the immense in-gear urge, the immediacy of the chassis and the searing V8 engine, which emits a spine-tingling mechanical shrill on the way to its 9150rpm limiter.”

Chris Harris was more circumspect, praising the car, but always with a caveat. It’s worth noting that the cars being tested are pre-production prototypes still to undergo fine tuning. It’s also worth checking out Harris’ thoughts below.

New Porsche 911 GT2 to continue PDK-only trend

991 Porsche 911 Turbo S

The next Porsche 911 GT2 will continue the company’s shift towards PDK-only transmissions, Autocar reports. Based on the 991 Turbo S, the new GT2 will use the same 412kW 3.8 litre twin turbo flat six engine. As usual the GT2 “widow-maker” will be rear wheel drive, rather than all-wheel drive as in the Turbo S. And for the first time will be available exclusively with a double-clutch gearbox.

It’s expected the GT2 will debut at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show next March. A GT2 RS model is also in the works for 2015, with current predictions suggesting it will have in excess of 620hp. If that number sounds familiar, that’s because the 997 GT2 RS boasts the same figure. So it stands to reason that Porsche will ensure the 991 GT2 RS will have a bit more grunt, even if it’s only an extra 10hp or so.
