The “5 by Peugeot” Concept Car – 508 preview

5 by Peugeot Concept Car

Peugeot have just released images of this new Concept Car. Peugeot are pushing it as a “new luxury saloon driving experience”. Its full title is rather clumsy—5 by Peugeot Concept Car—but just look at it. There’s nothing clumsy about the exterior. It is a very, very good looking car. Nothing revolutionary in terms of overall shape or concept, but a beautifully executed design.

Okay, perhaps the bonnet and rear lights might be a bit fussy. And, yes, LED headlamps are becoming over played (get used to that), but given the rest of the detailing on the car, it’s easy to excuse those frivolous moments. When you’re going through the images below make sure you take the time to appreciate the side profile of the glasshouse. The way the B-pillar has been hidden behind the windows is a wonderful piece of design. If, in fact there is a B-pillar, being a concept car you’re never quite sure what is beneath under the skin.

Peugeot’s press release makes no comment about the Geneva Motor Show, but we will see more of this car then. After making such a grand statement with the exterior one can only hope they have created an interior to match.

The 5 by Peugeot is powered by the company’s Hybrid4 technology, also seen in the RCZ concept, which is a mix of electric and diesel power. Good for 200bhp and CO2 emissions under 100g/km the car is driven by all four wheels.

Peugeot SR1 Concept

Peugeot SR1 Concept

Peugeot say they are embarking on a new design direction. To make the world sit up and take notice they have released these images of their SR1 Concept. The concept car will make its debut at the Geneva Motor Show this March. Further pushing Peugeot’s future direction, the SR1 is powered by hybrid technology producing a total of 313bhp.

The first engine is a 1.6 litre THP petrol engine providing the bulk of the power with 218bhp on tap, while an electric motor provides the remaining 95bhp. The SR1 also features all-wheel drive. Such HYbrid4 technology will first been seen in the Peugeot range in the 3008 model due in 2011.

In full electric mode the SR1 produces no emissions, overall the CO2 emissions are rated at 119g/km and average fuel consumption is 4.9l/100km (57.7mpg).

Also announced with the SR1 Concept, and to celebrate the company’s 200th anniversary, is a new logo for the French brand (see separate article).

A total of 24 images can be accessed in wallpaper-friendly 2000px sizing by clicking on each pic. Peugeot’s full press release also follows after the jump.

Peugeot puts a line through the GTi

Peugeot 205 GTI

UK media outlet Autocar is reporting that Peugeot will scrap its GTi badge. That’s right, no more hot hatchery from one of the finest exponents of the genre.

Apparently Peugeot will focus more heavily on the likes of the upcoming RCZ coupé. It is believed the Audi TT in haute couture will offer more to Peugeot’s brand recognition than tuned versions of their volume selling hatchbacks. Well, that’s the theory anyway.

Speaking to Autocar Peugeot’s marketing director said, “For us, the GTI concept is dead. We will move away from hot hatches towards premium sports coupes.”

So, shed a few tears for the end of some froggy cornering goodness. The likes of the 205 GTI, 306 GTi6 and 206 GTI180 will be remembered fondly. Even the awkward looking 207 GTi, with a MINI Cooper S engine, is quite a capable mover.

Let’s hope Renault maintains the rage, as the French generally take a vive la différence approach to the hot hatch segment.

Peugeot’s clean, green AWD coupé

Peugeot RCZ HYbrid4 concept

You may remember the pics and details from Peugeot’s Audi TT clone that were about released a month ago. Now, Peugeot has announced that they want a piece of the green market too, with this RCZ HYbrid4 concept.

Headline figures are around 3.7l/100km, CO2 emissions of 95g/km and all while still having a smidge under 150kW to play with.

That’s not tricky part, though. The real headline feature of this car is that the power supplied is split between two engines, one driving the front wheels, the other powering the rears. A 2-litre diesel offering 120kW provides the go up front, while an electric engine sends an additional 28kW to the rears. Torque to the front is a healthy 300Nm, while that tiny leccy engine sends 200Nm of torque to the rear axle.

A pretty neat interpretation of all-wheel drive then!

Peugeot RCZ – it’s like an Audi TT, but French

Peugeot RCZ

The man in the dark sunglasses is back. This time, though, he is not so shy about showing us his car. So, here, in full, is the new Peugeot RCZ.

Revealed a month out from the start of the Frankfurt Motor Show, where the car will make its public debut, these pictures show off the stunning lines and attractive curves of the RCZ. It is quite a nice car to look at, really, even if the Audi inspiration is clear.

The most memorable exterior styling cue is probably the “double bubble” roofline. Check the curves on the rear window! The active rear spoiler has two settings, depending on the speed travelled, and Peugeot say it has the right balance between road holding and fuel consumption. They also say the RCZ has “superb aerodynamics”. Although, in the press release below at least, they don’t put a figure to that claim.

The 2+2 coupé will be powered by three engines at its launch. All turbocharged four cylinders, two petrol, one diesel. The entry level is the 2.0 HDi FAP (no, I’m not kidding) which is good for 120kW (163bhp) and 340Nm (251lb ft) of torque.

Next are the two petrol engines, both 1.6 litre in capacity and closely related to the offerings found in the MINI range. The first produces 116kW (156bhp), with torque rated at 240Nm (177lb ft). The second headlines the RCZ lineup the 2.0 THP offering 150kW (200bhp) and peak torque of 275Nm (203lb ft) with overboost function. The higher spec engine features Sound System technology that creates a different note according to engine speed, “just like a musical instrument”.

All engine options can be mated to a six speed manual gearbox, while only the lower spec 1.6 litre petrol engine has the option of a six speed sequential automatic transmission. Although, this won’t be available until a few months after the car goes on sale in the first half of 2010

Sadly there is only one photo supplied to date of the interior, described as possessing “subtly elitist ambience”. Not content with that array of adjectives the PR team continue saying the interior is “echoing the world of motor sport”. Quite. Although, the leather dash is pretty cool, it has to be said.

There’s more pics to be viewed after the jump along with a detailed press release from Peugeot UK. As usual, clicking on any of the pictures will load a wallpaper-friendly 2000px super image.

UPDATE: The Motor Report brings us news saying the RCZ will launch in Australia in the latter half of next year. Très bien!

Peugeot RCZ to be revealed at Frankfurt Motor Show

Peugeot RCZ

Peugeot’s answer to the Audi TT, the RCZ 2+2 Coupé, will make it’s official, production ready, debut at this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show in September. To help build anticipation for this reveal Peugeot have released a bunch of teaser images. We’re not sure who the dude in the dark glasses is, but we think he thinks he is pretty cool. Never mind, it’s all about the car right, so just click on each image to load 2000px versions.

The good news is the RCZ will be in Pegeuot showrooms across the globe in 2010, including Australia.

Ken Thomas, general manager of Peugeot Automobiles Australia said, “The RCZ got a lot of attention when it was unveiled as a concept car and we are confident that the car will receive even more attention on the road.

“We will be offering high performance petrol and diesel engines when the car arrives here. To say we are excited about the RCZ coming to Australia is an understatement.”

It will be interesting to see what Peugeot defines as high performance engines. By the time the RCZ arrives down under the Audi TT RS will be on sale and then there is also the BMW Z4, Mercedes-Benz SLK, Nissan 370Z and Porsche Cayman to consider.

Will the RCZ be a hairdresser’s car, or can Peugeot capture the spirit of the Le Mans winning 908 HDi and make a fair dinkum sports coupé for the road?

More pics after the jump.

24 Hours of Le Mans 2009 in words and pictures

Peugeot 908 HDi - 24 Hours of Le Mans 2009

As reported last night, Australia’s David Brabham, along with Marc Gené and Alexander Wurz, drove their Peugeot 908 HDi to victory at Le Mans, finally beating fierce rivals Audi. Both teams headed the field for most of the weekend, with the Peugeot team dominating the race.

“It’s such a great feeling to have won,” beamed David Brabham. “Peugeot Sport did a tremendous job; they really did.

“It’s a great team – they gave us a 100 per cent reliable car and the three of us drove a faultless race.”

Audi, on the other hand, began the race with high hopes. With five successive Le Mans wins behind them, and a hard fought win over Peugeot in the Sebring 12 hour for their new R15 TDI, the 2009 race was always going to be a fight between the French and German teams, despite a renewed bid from Aston Martin.

Audi sent three cars to La Sarthe, but only one remained in contention. Although, as the race drew to a close hopes began to fade and the #1 R15 TDI held on for a safe third place, some seven laps behind the race winner.

The Audi team were gracious in defeat and, according to Dr Wolfgang Ullrich, Head of Audi Motorsport, are already planning their 2010 assault, “Obviously we are a little disappointed about the result. We didn’t manage to extract the full potential of the Audi R15 TDI in the race, which we had seen during testing.

“In addition, we had several technical problems that really caught us by surprise. As a result, we could only get one car onto the podium. Peugeot produced a fantastic performance and certainly deserved the victory. We will analyze the problems we had to ensure we come back stronger in 2010.”

More from the Peugeot and Audi PR teams below.

Peugeot 908 HDi wins 24 Hours of Le Mans

2009 24 Hours of Le Mans scoreboard

The #9 Peugeot 908 HDi has just won the 77th running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. With the #8 Peugeot crossing the line in second, it was a quinella for the Peugeot team. The #1 R15 TDI from the defending Audi team finished third.

Spain’s Marc Gené drove the winning car across the finish line, completing the hard work of teammates David Brabham (Australia) and Alexander Wurz (Austria).

David Brabham’s win makes it a double success for the Brabham-Peugeot combination. David’s older brother Geoff, driving a Peugeot 905, won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1993.

A complete list of Le Mans winners can be viewed at Wikipedia. Photos and driver quotes will be posted on AUSmotive tomorrow.

Can Peugeot end Audi’s dominance?

Peugeot 908 HDi - 2009 24 Hours of Le Mans

Well into the second half of the 2009 24 Hours of Le Mans the Peugeot 908 HDi looks set to end Audi’s dominance of the event.

The #9 Peugeot 908 HDi, driven by Australia’s David Brabham, Marc Gené (Spain) and Alexander Wurz (Austria), is currently leading the race. The pole position winning #8 Peugeot, with an all French driving team of Stéphane Sarrazin, Franck Montagny and Sebastien Bourdais, is in second place.

The race for Audi has not gone to plan with just one car left in contention. Despite turbo overheating problems the #1 Audi R15 TDI of Allan McNish (Scotland), Tom Kristenesen (Denmark) and Dindo Capello (Italy) is fighting hard in third place, one lap behind the two Peugeots.

There is still a long way to go, with the race finish still some 10 hours away (11pm AEST). To keep up to date you check your local OneHD guide, or tune in to Radio Le Mans for complete audio coverage. A live scoreboard can also be accessed from the official race website. Peugeot also have a dedicated Le Mans website being constantly updated.

For those of us not in a OneHD coverage area, US motorsport channel SpeedTV is also offering a live feed of the race.

Limited edition Peugeot 207 HDi Le Mans Series

Peugeot 207 HDi Le Mans Series

Car companies are never too shy to let a marketing opportunity slip, and the limited edition Pegueot 207 HDi ‘Le Mans Series’ is certainly proof of that. Limited to just 75 models in Australia (from 2000 world wide) the diesel Pug attempts to build on Peugeot’s Le Mans heritage, including their triple podium result in the 1993 24 hour race (with Geoff Brabham in the winning car) and the current 908 HDi FA racecar

Priced at $31,990 the 1.6 litre 207 HDi is available in Biana White and Obsidien Black, both colours having the red racing stripe on the bonnet and the (dare I say it) HSV-like lion’s head door graphic. The limited edition model also has plenty of other goodies thrown in, including 17″ alloys, ESP, dual zone climate control and leather/alcantara seats, to name just  a few. As expected, fuel consumption is very tidy, coming in under 5l/100km, although power is moderate at 80kW, but in true diesel fashion torque is where it’s at—the 207 HDi ‘Le Mans Series’ has 240Nm available at just 1750rpm.

Full details from Pegeuot can be read after the jump.
