Nissan improves Godzilla

Nissan GT-R

For the 2010 production cycle Nissan have introduced a number of updates to its hero GT-R model. A bunch of interior equipment has been refreshed, including the satellite navigation system. But, really, who cares about that. What about performance, have they made Godzilla any faster?

Nissan’s engineers have increased the flow of the catalytic converter, fiddled about with the suspension and nicked the cooling ducts from the rear diffuser of the Spec-V model. They have also improved cooling for the hard-working transmission.

“The Nissan GT-R continues to appeal to perfection-seeking motoring enthusiasts in Australia,” said Dan Thompson, CEO of Nissan Australia, “And the arrival of the finessed 2010-11 model GT-R makes this amazing motor car even more desirable. It truly is a modern classic.”

There’s no power or torque increases, but there has been a rise in the GT-R’s asking price. List pricing now starts at $158,800 for the base model, while the Premium model, which includes two-tone leather a flash stereo and 20″ wheels, is now priced from $162,800. So far 260 GT-Rs have been sold in Australia and these modest price increases of 1.9% are unlikely to hurt sales at all.

More from Nissan after the break.

Godzilla on track for GT1 championship

Nissan GT-R - FIA GT1

Nissan will be hoping this is the view the new FIA GT1 field sees in 2010 after announcing four new GT-Rs will be taking part in the upcoming season. Nismo have signed agreements with UK-based Sumo Power GT and Swiss Racing Team, based in, well Switzerland. Each team will run a two car operation with Nismo offering tech support.

Other details are pretty scant at the moment, so you’ll just have to make do with these pics that make the GT-R’s backside even bigger—but so much naughtier!

Autocar - GT-R v 911 Turbo v R8 V10

The Nissan GT-R, the Porsche 911 Turbo and the Audi R8 V10. Immensely capable and devastatingly quick cars, all. But does the quickest track car make the best road car? Do flappy paddle gearboxes still incur the wrath of reviewers like they once did? Does price matter?

Steve Sutcliffe from Autocar has been kind enough to take these three weapons to the 3km Castle Combe to find out. You can watch the clip after the jump.

Car phones

Nissan 370Z

Nissan’s paint technology will soon be applied to mobile phones, of all things. Used on cars such as the Nissan 370Z the ‘Scratch Shield’ paint is, as its name suggests, less prone to surface scratching.

Even better than that, though, is the paint is said to have self-healing properties. It’s as if a bunch of paint tins were sent to Byron Bay for a holiday where they smoked a bit of pot and came back with a few tatts and all hippie like at peace with themselves.

The healing process can take place in around 24 hours for less severe cases, with deeper scratching taking up to a week to buff itself right out. Pretty amazing stuff, it has to be said.

So, while you might need to be Einstein to develop the technology inside this magic paint, you certainly don’t need to be too clever to work out that the product is perfectly suited to mobile phones.

Apparently this magic paint has been around for four years or so now. Where have I been? Why haven’t I heard of this before? And why aren’t more manufacturers copying this technology?

Nissan 200SX car jacked during test drive

Nissan 200SX stolen during test drive

A teenager trying to sell his car got more than he bargained for when it was stolen at gun point during a test drive at around 9 o’clock last night. The incident took place at the intersection of Bent and Yeo Streets, near the seller’s home in Neutral Bay, Sydney.

The dark blue 1997 Nissan 200SX was advertised on carsales.com.au and the two men came to the north-shore home under the pretence of buying the car. Shortly after agreeing to join the men on a test drive the seller was threatened with a gun and forced out of the car. Fortunately, the 19-year-old was not hurt during the ordeal.

Given the car is over 10 years old and not especially desirable in its own right one could speculate that the offenders are hoping to use the car for further crime related activities.

The registration of the stolen Nissan is AT58ZV. Police have asked anyone who sees the car or who may have witnessed last night’s incident to come forward by calling Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. A brief description of the alleged thieves can be found on the link below.

Nissan GT-R takes on Spa 24 hour

Nissan GT-R at 2009 Spa 24 hour

The R35 Nissan GT-R will be making its European endurance racing debut this weekend at the Spa 24 hour race. This marks the first appearance of a factory backed GT-R at the race since it won the event back in 1991 under Group A touring car regulations. The 2009 race forms part of the FIA GT calendar and sees entries from some of motorsport’s biggest names, including Aston Martin, Audi, Corvette, Ford, Ferrari, Maserati and Porsche.

Nissan Motorsport have completed 10,000kms in testing since the car’s initial shakedown last December. The car will be driven by German Michael Krumm and Britons Darren Turner and ex-F1 driver Anthony Davidson.

Live timing for the event can be accessed from mstworld.com. Judging by the times posted during a wet Free Practice 1 the GT-R will be giving the established runners a stern test indeed.

Nissan GT-R’s 7:26.70 Nurburgring lap

Footage of the Nissan GT-R’s most recent “record” time has now made it on to YouTube. At the wheel is Nissan Chief test driver Toshio Suzuki and you can see clearly from the clip that he had a job on his hands, fighting what appears to be some pretty savage understeer at times. Check the work on the wheel at Aremberg (1:21 into the lap).

The speed after Aremberg on the downhill run into Fuchsröhre is amazing. Although, that speed did come at a cost with a pretty hairy moment at the first left hander into Adenauer Forst (1:40).

It’s a cracking lap, I trust you will enjoy watching it.

Nissan GT-R sets new Nürburgring record

R35 Nissan GT-R

Back in April a factory assault on the Nürburgring Nordschleife saw the Nissan GT-R set a new fastest lap. The new time, set late in the month, was an impressive 7 minutes 26.70 seconds. This marked a slight improvement over their earlier effort in mid-April.

However, the press statement announcing this grand news was only released about a week ago. So I decided to wait until the middle of the Nürburgring 24 hour race to post up the news. I thought that would be the best way to get something related to the GT-R online while the N24 action was underway.

You see, I am guessing that I am probably not the only one that finds the absence of the headline chasing GT-R at the Ring this weekend a little bit “interesting”. Gun shy perhaps?

Targa Tasmania 2009 – The winners

Targa Tasmania 2009

Tony Quinn (QLD) and Naomi Tillett (SA) in a 2008 Nissan GT-R have won this year’s Targa Tasmania. Quinn was at the pointy end of the field throughout the event, but he faced an eight second deficit to the 2007 Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera of Kevin Weeks (SA) leading into the final day. And what a drama filled day it proved to be.

The cool and wet conditions which faced the drivers meant it was a case of finding that balance between pushing hard and simply staying on the black stuff.

The first stage of Leg 5, TS35 ‘Strahan’, was a 33.3km long stretch of unforgiving slippery tarmac. And with the start point on the edge of the town itself, drivers were given little chance to work much needed heat into their tyres and brakes.

Quinn fought desperately hard in the heavy GT-R and was 11 seconds faster than Weeks. The ball was now in Weeks’ court and he attempted to wrestle back the lead on the following 6.4km ‘Queenstown’ stage. The stage begins with a tight and twisty climb out of the mining town, before opening up into a frighteningly quick downhill section. It was here that the result of the rally was decided when Weeks lost control and flew off the bitumen into the roadside scrub and bushes.

It was a savage incident and Weeks and navigator Rebecca Crunkhorn were airlifted to Hobart General Hospital. Fortunately, both suffered little more than bruised pride, Crunkhorn was released later that day, but Weeks remained in hospital overnight with suspected rib injuries. The South Australian is expected to make a speedy recovery.

Local competitors Jason and John White, also in a Lamborghini Gallardo were now in second place. For the previous four days they formed part of a very tight leaderboard, but mechanical gremlins suffered by the Lambo on the final few stages meant that Tony Quinn would claim a six minute winning margin. The largest in the event’s 18 year history.

Quinn and Weeks have both come very close to winning Targa Tasmania in the past. Both are likeable characters and either driver would have proved to be a popular winner. Speaking at the post-rally function the following day “Quinny” was gracious in victory and expressed heartfelt thanks to the numerous well wishes and support he and navigator Naomi Tillet had received.

Targa Tasmania is a gruelling event, extremely tough on cars and a fierce mental test of driver and navigator, anyone who thinks Quinn won this event simply because he was driving a GT-R is kidding themselves.

Nissan GT-R – World Performance Car of the Year 2009

Nissan GT-R

The Nissan GT-R, unsurprisingly perhaps, won this year’s World Performance Car of the Year gong. Most companies would think this is a pretty cool award to win. There’s certainly some media cachet waiting to be exploited. Or, so you would think. But, as far as I can tell, Nissan marketing teams on both sides of the globe are sitting on their arse doing nothing.

There’s nothing on the regular Australian or UK press outlets from the Nissan marketing machine about this news. Now, either they’re all out fannying about in GT-Rs which have just started deliveries in both those markets, or they’ve been given extended Easter holiday breaks. Either way, for car hyped so much as the GT-R this appears to be hard to believe.

So, if you’re from Nissan, please send me an official statement and AUSmotive will gladly run it. Perhaps they’re just waiting for the new Nürburgring marketing time? (Update – Looks like I was right, haha!)

Someone who does care about this award are the WCOTY folks and their press release can be read after the jump. That said, clearly they don’t give a rats about the GT-R either as they claim it has a 3.6 litre V8 engine. Haha, great work all round really!

Nissan GT-R – The budget supercar, or is it?

Nissan GT-R

The widely acclaimed Nissan GT-R is acknowledged as a genuine supercar. For a fraction of the cost, it has humbled the best Porsche can offer. However, a US website has revealed the GT-R may not actually be as cheap as first thought.

Edmunds Inside Line took their long-term loan GT-R in for a routine service the other day. Okay, it was a major service according to the factory schedule, but the final bill came in at over US$2000 (approx AU$2900). Looks like it’s hard work keeping up with the Porsches. Especially hard on the differential and transaxle, which needed new fluids. Made from liquid gold it seems! Check the link below for the full itemised account.

I guess the Australian customers about to take delivery will not mind spending such amounts after forking out AU$150,000 for the car in the first place. All the same, such high service bills will make for a varied experience at your local Nissan dealer, alongside true budget motoring, such as the Micra et al.
