New vehicle sales report – June 2012

FCAI banner

Not content with May’s sales figures—an all-time record for that month—Australian car buyers have now set a new record for any month, registering 112,566 vehicle sales in June. That’s a staggering increase of 16,409 sales compared to June 2011.

Year-to-date sales total 547,854 vehicles and you’d suggest that means Australia will once again top one million annual sales.

The Toyota HiLux was the country’s highest selling model in June with 4,308 sales, ahead of the Mazda3 (3,924) and Toyota Corolla (3,804).

It’s no surprise, then, to see Toyota continue their stranglehold as the best selling manufacturer. They sold 21,649 vehicles last month, compared to 10,632 by Holden and 9,672 for Hyundai.

2012 Le Mans 24h: DeltaWing post-race report

Nissan DeltaWing at 24 Hours of Le Mans

We bring you another belated Le Mans catch up, this time featuring the doomed Nissan DeltaWing. The car itself ran pretty well, it was the tap from the #7 Toyota TS030 that ultimately ended the DeltaWing’s race.

After crashing into the wall, driver Satoshi Motoyama tried valiantly for an hour and a half to repair the experimental car so that he could drive it back to the pits for a more intensive repair effort. Alas, the DeltaWing was too damaged and had to withdraw.

The sad and somehow lonely video of Motoyama with the wrecked DeltaWing will become one of the lasting memories from the 2012 endurance epic.

Despite the sad ending to his day Motoyama remained positive about his race experience and also about the future of the DeltaWing: “I have had such a great time driving this car and I’ve loved working with Marino, Michael and the entire time. We have really shown what the future of sportscar racing could look like – ultra efficient.

“I really hope I can get the opportunity to drive the car again, because we really do have unfinished business. I am certain the car would have run for a long time if not for the contact.”

There’s more from Nissan and Highcroft Racing after the break, including a healthy selection of images of the DeltaWing in action.

Toyota punts Nissan DeltaWing out of Le Mans

Nissan DeltaWing crashes out of 2012 Le Mans

The 2012 Le Mans 24 Hour race is now deep into the night and has just past the 12 hour mark. Sadly the morning brings bad news for the Nissan DeltaWing. Driven by Satoshi Motoyama at the time of the incident, he was pushed off track and into the wall by Kazuki Nakajima in the #7 Toyota TS030 Hybrid.

There was heavy traffic when the crash took place, caused by the field being bunched up following a restart from a period under Safety Car conditions.

Perhaps the only positive from the impact is that it gives Nissan some real world feedback on the safety of the lightweight chassis.

After the break we have a couple of videos showing the before and after. Ultimately the little Nissan that could was forced to retire.

Nissan previews 24 Hours of Le Mans

Nissan previews 24 Hours of Le Mans

With the 80th running of the celebrated 24 Hours of Le Mans race to take place this weekend the major players are sending out their official previews; sharing their line ups, hopes and expectations.

First we bring you Nissan’s run down. Of course grabbing the headlines here is the DeltaWing, the failed IndyCar submission, now Le Mans prototype racer. The DeltaWing will be driven by Michael Krumm, Satoshi Motoyama and Marino Franchitti.

But there’s more to Nissan at Le Mans in 2012 than the DeltaWing curiosity. They proudly boast over 25% of the field will be powered by Nissan engines. Paul Willcox, Senior Vice President, Nissan in Europe, can barely contain his enthusiasm!

“The 2012 Le Mans 24 Hours will be Nissan’s biggest yet—everything we are doing at La Sarthe this year illustrates how Nissan is the boldest, most innovative manufacturer,” Wilcox proclaimed.

“On-track, Nissan will be the story of the race—the radical Nissan DeltaWing, as an experimental concept, harks back to the original motor racing trailblazers of the 1920s who first set out to go as fast as possible for as long as possible. Those pioneers changed the face of motorsport and, while we can’t win with the Nissan DeltaWing because it sits outside the regulations, we can’t lose either—the huge strides it will help us make in terms of future motorsport and road car innovations means Nissan has won before the race even starts.”

Social networkers can follow the exploits of Nissan this weekend via Facebook and twitter.

You can read the full spiel from Nissan after the break.

New vehicle sales report – May 2012

FCAI banner

Last month Australians set a new vehicle sales record for the month of May. A total of 96,069 vehicles were sold, representing a very healthy increase of over 24% (18,668 vehicles) compared to May 2011.

Year-to-date numbers are up almost 9% on 2011 numbers, with a total of 435,288 sales in the first five months of 2012.

Toyota, as usual, claims the major monthly honours of top selling manufacturer (20,443) and highest selling individual model with the HiLux (4,626). Holden (9,017) and Mazda (8,346) fall in behind Toyota on the sales charts.

With such a bumper month it’s no surprise to see so many manufacturers releasing brag sheets. You can read them all after the break.

Porsche 911 Turbo S v Nissan GT-R Track Pack

Porsche 911 Turbo S v Nissan GT-R Track Pack

In his latest Drive video Chris Harris takes to Brands Hatch in a Porsche 911 Turbo S and a Nissan GT-R Track Pack (available in the UK and Japan only). It’s not the first time the Turbo S has found itself in an online battle against the GT-R. Of course, it won’t be the last either.

To the question Harris’ mind: Does the £10K extra asked for the Track Pack over the standard GT-R make a noticeable and worthwhile difference? And, which of these two cars would he take home, assuming a desire for a daily driver capable of handling the odd track day?

New vehicle sales report – April 2012

FCAI banner

A total of 79,097 new vehicles were sold in April, official VFACTS numbers show. That’s an increase of 6.6% (4,833 sales) compared to same month last year.

While the demand for SUVs continues (27.6% of all monthly sales) there is an increasing trend for diesel powered SUVs, up 56% on the same month in 2011.

“Yet again, SUVs dominate the Australian vehicle market, with sales increasing for all sizes of SUVs in the private, business and rental sectors,” FCAI Chief Executive Ian Chalmers said. “This month however we can also see an interesting emergence of customer preference for diesel powered SUVs.”

The Hilux remains a leading product for Toyota and topped the sales charts in April, followed by the Mazda 3 and Toyota Corolla. No surprise to see Toyota heading sales figures, in front of Mazda and Holden.

Remind us why the Feds are supporting the Commodore and Falcon again?

Nissan announces limited Juke-R production

Nissan Juke R, Desert Nemesis

Aha, now Nissan’s Desert Nemesis flick makes a bit more sense. Nissan has just confirmed they will build a limited number of Juke-Rs, with the first three cars to be delivered some time around August.

Nissan has also said two of the first cars to be built will be heading to “a high-profile and well-respected member of Dubai society.” While they haven’t named names, you’d reckon Salah Salahuddin, featured in Desert Nemesis, would be a safe bet.

The original concept was based on the MY10 GT-R, but the real-deal Juke-R will be based on the more powerful MY12 spec. Nissan hasn’t put a cap on the number of Juke-Rs they will make, saying instead there will be a “very limited run on build-to-order basis.”

Gareth Dunsmore, Marketing Product Manager for the Juke, said: “The Juke-R was originally intended as a one-off concept to marry two of Nissan’s most innovative models. But the reaction we had to the car in Dubai was amazing—people were making offers for the original on the street!

“With such a strong reaction, and with three genuine offers on the table, we decided we had to make the car a reality. We can’t let down enthusiasts who are this keen to add to their collection of cars. The Juke-R has become something of a phenomenon and I’m enormously proud of the impact it has had. There will be more news to come on Juke later in the year.”

So, the Juke-R then. Ugly as sin, crazy as batshit and utterly pointless. And yet, we cannot applaud Nissan enough for turning the über-crossover into a road-going reality. Even if you’ll need a jaw-dropping US$600K to play.

VIDEO: The Nissan Juke-R “Desert Nemesis”

Nissan Juke-R

Following yesterday’s preview, here is the full version of the Desert Nemesis short film, featuring the Nissan Juke-R. It runs for about six minutes and the official intro reads:

The film, which is reminiscent of the ‘Need for Speed’ movies, Desert Nemesis follows GT Academy winner Lucas Ordóñez as he takes the one-off Juke-R to the streets of Dubai to take part in a street race against some of the world’s most famous and thrilling sports cars.

A bit like the Juke-R itself we’re not entirely sure if this film has been a worthwhile exercise. As a meaningless journey where the destination is to have a lot of fun and thrash some very nice cars, though, it’s first class.

Nissan Juke-R “Desert Nemesis” preview

Nissan Europe has sent in a couple of preview clips for a new short film featuring the equal parts awesome and oddball Juke-R. The flick, titled Desert Nemesis, was filmed back in February when the Juke-R was showing a trio of supercars what its GT-R drivetrain can do on the streets of Dubai. Here’s a few words about the film:

To follow up on the footage of the Nissan Juke-R racing supercars in Dubai, Nissan has produced a short film directed by Award-winning film director, Rob Kaplan that is shot in incredible high definition using state of the art camera technology. The story of the film is that Gran Turismo gamer-turned-professional race driver, Lucus Ordonez is challenged to race the Nissan Juke-R against Salah Salahuddin’s supercar collection.

Check out the previews, and a clip of the original race in Dubai, after the break.
