You’ve got two months left to ‘Rush’

Rush F1 movie

Today marks two months until the world premiere of Ron Howard’s F1 movie Rush. Advance screenings have already taken place, and many in current F1 circles, including Niki Lauda, have seen the film.

It’s understood Lauda led the applause when Howard presented the film to an F1 audience prior to the German Grand Prix.

“I spoke to the drivers, and they were very complimentary, which made me feel great,” Howard told SPEED.com. “Some of the engineering guys are so excited by what we’ve achieved. I don’t know where that comes from—perhaps they’ve been disappointed by other films, or perhaps they assumed it was too complicated for us to ever get it.”

Importantly, Bernie Ecclestone is a fan. Howard recalled a conversation he had with the F1 supremo: “I said to Bernie, ‘Thanks for taking the time to see the movie,’ and he said, ‘Thanks for making it. It really took me back.’ He wasn’t joking, he was kind of emotional, and I think he was surprised.”

As you can probably tell we’re very much looking forward to seeing the film. We appreciate how open Howard has been throughout the making of the movie. He’s given fans an insight all the way though, mostly through his twitter account.

Howard’s media appearances have also been great, bringing us closer to the story and giving F1 fans a stake in its creation. His recent appearance on Top Gear is just one example of that.

To help you count down the days you can check out the official Rush website as well as a selection of previews we have for you after the break.

Clearly, the future of F1’s long-time supremo (does anyone other than Bernie get called a supremo?) hangs on the outcome of this little saga. Ferrari President Luca di Montezemolo is one man you get the feeling would be quite pleased to see the back of Bernie.

Bernie is no stranger to controversy and Andrew Benson from the BBC has taken a look at the life and times of the most powerful man in F1. We think you should read it.

Bernie Ecclestone indicted over bribery claims

Bernie Eccelstone

Bernie Ecclestone has been indicted by German prosecutors over an alleged bribery stemming back to the 2006 sale of F1 broadcast rights to private equity firm CVC Capital Partners.

Involved in that sale was German banker, Gerhard Gribkowsky of BayernLB, who was managing the transfer of his bank’s 47% ownership of F1 to CVC. It is alleged Ecclestone paid Gribkowsky $44m. That little transaction saw Gribkowsky charged with a breach of trust, tax evasion and receipt of corrupt payments. He was found guilty and sentenced to eight-and-a-half years jail by a Munich court.

In response to the indictment Ecclestone said: “I have just spoken to my lawyers and they have received an indictment. It’s being translated into English.

“We are defending it properly. It will be an interesting case. It’s a pity it’s happened.”

Bernie claims he was being blackmailed by Gribkowsky over threats that could expose Eccelstone to UK tax authorities.

In June last year, when giving evidence against Gribkowsky, Bernie claimed: “The only alternative was that the British tax authorities followed a case that would have been very expensive for me.

“The tax risk would have exceeded £2bn. I paid him to keep calm and not to do silly things.”

That’s one big tax risk you have there Bernie!

The F1 supremo has previously said he has “nothing to hide” on this matter and it looks like we’re about to find out if that is actually the case.

FIA statement on marshal death at Canadian GP

2013 Canadian Grand Prix

As we touched on in our race report a marshal was killed in this morning’s Canadian Grand Prix. We know of at least two AUSmotive readers who continue to work trackside at Formula 1 races and it really brings it home that there are real dangers involved in this type of work. We hate hearing news like this and we hope we never have to report on such news again.

This is the full statement from the FIA:

FIA statement following death of Canadian Grand Prix circuit worker.

Mon 10.06.13, 1:01AM

The FIA is sad to announce the death of a Formula 1 Grand Prix du Canada circuit worker, at 6:02 pm.

The worker, a member of the Automobile Club de l’Île Notre Dame, was the victim of an unfortunate accident that occurred at the end of this afternoon’s Formula 1 Grand Prix du Canada. The worker was helping to recover a car which had stopped during the race. The recovery vehicle had lifted the car to return it to the pits and while doing this the worker dropped his radio and attempted to pick it up. As he did this, he stumbled and was hit and run over by the recovery vehicle.

The worker was transported via helicopter to Sacre-Coeur Hospital where he was treated by the traumatology department of Dr Ronald Denis, Deputy Chief Medical Officer and Dr Jacques Bouchard, Chief Medical Officer of the Grand Prix. Unfortunately, the worker succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

The FIA, l’Automobile Club de l’Île Notre-Dame and the Formula 1 Grand Prix du Canada want to communicate their deepest condolences to the family and friends of the victim. The identity of the worker cannot be revealed at this time.

Ford Australia to stop local manufacturing in 2016

Ford Broadmeadows Assembly Plant

Ford Australia has confirmed it will cease all local production at its Broadmeadows and Geelong factories from October 2016. Declining Falcon and Territory sales, along with combined losses of $430 million over the last two years would appear to be the main reasons behind today’s announcement.

Bob Graziano, president and CEO of Ford Australia, says up to 1200 jobs will be lost. He added Ford will increase their imported product lineup by 30% in a bid to return to profitability.

Updated versions of the Falcon, Falcon Ute and Territory will go ahead later this year as planned.

Federal Treasurer Wayne Swan said the Government will provide support to those affected. “The government will do everything within our power to support workers and local communities that may be affected by the decision taken by Ford,” he said.

Now that one has gone, how long will Australia’s other iconic manufacturer, Holden, survive? It’s currently in the middle of launching the all-new VF Commodore range to the media and it’s not too far fetched to suggest that could be the last major local model built by Holden.

Ford Australia to cease local production?

2013 Ford Falcon range

Wheels Magazine reports that Ford Australia is about to announce the closure of its operations and rely on imported models only. Apparently a statement will be made at 9:15 10:45 this morning.

ABC radio says it understands Ford Australia’s local production will cease in 2016. Cars Guide is also running a story which states:

Ford was due to release its financial results today but News Limited has been told the media conference is about “more than that”.

Confidential sources say that Ford Australia will become an import-only brand. It is unclear when the factories will close but Ford was due to introduce a facelifted Falcon and Territory next year.

Declining sales, which are showing no signs of improvement, are believed to be the main factor behind the decision. Closure of the Broadmeadows and Geelong factories will result in hundreds of job losses.
