Sydney’s Eastern Creek bids for World GT1 round

FIA GT Champsionship

The current European-based FIA GT Championship is set to be replaced by a new World GT1 Championship in 2010. A preliminary calendar has Round 2 being held in Australia. Sydney’s Eastern Creek has stepped forward making an official bid to host that round.

Judging by some of the comments from the series promoter, UK-based SRO Motorsports Group, the Creek looks to be a shoe-in, “Eastern Creek’s facilities and track design benefit from a Grade 2 FIA Homologation, which is the level required to host a round of the FIA GT1 World Championship,” SRO President and CEO Stephane Ratel said.

“One of the attractions of the venue is that it is within the boundaries of one of the world’s most desirable cities, and it is walk-in-walk-out.”

A truly global franchise, the GT1 category will attract competition from the likes of Aston Martin, Audi, Ferrari and Chevrolet. Nissan, Ford and Lamborghini have already committed to the 2010 Championship.

Eastern Creek is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2009, being awarded hosting rights for the GT1 party would be a fitting celebration. A final decision will be made in October.

Television coverage of the 2009 FIA GT Championship can be seen in Australia on One HD, check your local guides for details.

Stairway to heaven

McLaren F1 GTR

I reckon at the top of the stairway to heaven this would be one of the cars in the garage. The car in question, of course, is a McLaren F1 GTR ‘Longtail’. Just 10 were made for competition in the 1997 FIA GT season and the example pictured above could be yours. That’s right, even before you get to heaven.

I can’t read Japanese, but I’m guessing the website advertising this motoring royalty is saying “konichiwa, if sir has to ask, then sir can’t afford it”, or something like that. Ooh, it makes me wonder.

I’m not sure about you, but I didn’t win the $90M lotto draw, so I won’t be buying my stairway to heaven just yet.

Rebel yell

Last night a little dancer went dancing to Mosley’s door. Usually this would make Max a very happy chappy, but, sadly for him she wasn’t that type of dancer. Instead it was the Formula One Teams Association (FOTA) dancer bringing the news that eight teams don’t care for his stylez and want to start their own competition.

The teams backing the breakaway series are BMW-Sauber, BrawnGP, Scuderia Ferrari, McLaren-Mercedes, Red Bull Racing, Renault, Scuderia Toro Rosso and Toyota. FOTA’s statement (which can be viewed in full after the jump) reads: “The teams cannot continue to compromise on the fundamental values of the sport and have declined to alter their original conditional entries to the 2010 World Championship.

“These teams therefore have no alternative other than to commence the preparation for a new Championship which reflects the values of its participants and partners. This series will have transparent governance, one set of regulations, encourage more entrants and listen to the wishes of the fans, including offering lower prices for spectators worldwide, partners and other important stakeholders.”

No doubt the midnight hour will bring more, more, more. For ongoing coverage keep an eye on the BBC F1 and Times Online websites.

Meanwhile, Silverstone is hosting it’s last British Grand Prix this weekend. Or is it?

Volkswagen 1.4 TSI wins International Engine of the Year

Volkswagen 1.4 TSI engine

Dr Ruediger Szengel, Head of Gasoline Engine Development for Volkswagen AG, was on hand to accept the award behalf of Volkswagen, “A combination of downsizing, direct injection and high boost pressure produce exceptionally high specific power output and torque with low emissions and fuel consumption from a gasoline engine.

“The success of TSI technology in this competition has blossomed as it has become available in more countries throughout the world. We are convinced that our competitors will follow but we are determined to keep our lead.”

R15 TDI to defend Audi’s honour

Audi R15 TDI

Audi’s recent honour roll at Le Mans is mighty impressive. They have won eight of the last nine races. Or, to put it another way, Audi has won every Le Mans 24 hour race in the 2000s, except for 2003. Audi’s current streak stands at five successive wins. No pressure, then, for the drivers of the new R15 TDI and their crew.

Unsurprisingly, perhaps, the R15 does indeed look up to the task. At its first major race meet, the Sebring 12 hour, the R15 won in style, setting a new laps record for the enduro.

Dr Wolfgang Ullrich, Head of Audi Motorsport, is confident of further success, while remaining cautious of rival teams, “The target is clear: We want to carry on where we left off in the previous years and continue our winning streak at Le Mans. We have a new car, the Audi R15 TDI, and were successful immediately with this car in its first race at Sebring. We know, however, that our competitors have improved in many aspects compared to the previous years and therefore expect possibly the toughest Le Mans race that we have ever contested.”

Eight-time race winner Tom Kristensen will be in the #1 car and is expecting a tough race, “We had a fantastic race with the new Audi R15 TDI against strong competition at Sebring in March. We’ve been working hard ever since, but have also been given 30 kilograms additional weight. We had to extend our test program because of this – one reason was to be absolutely sure we were on the safe side despite the higher weight. Another was obviously to optimize the car so that we could run as long as possible on a single set of tires despite the weight. Last year’s race was a genuine classic. Our lap times were not the quickest, but we won thanks to good team work and efficiency. We hope to close this performance gap with the R15 TDI. We want to exert pressure on the Peugeot team, which also never rests, just like Aston Martin and the other opponents. We are well prepared. I’m really looking forward to competing in the world’s greatest and fastest long-distance race and to be in the thick of the tough competition. I think we can expect a fantastic race.”

Peugeot have already attempted an overtaking move before the race has even begun by lodging a protest against the R15’s front wing. At this stage, with the R15 passing scrutineering at bpth Sebring and at Le Mans earlier this week, it would appear there’s not much to the French rival’s enquiry. But, as with any such matter in motorsport—watch this space!

More R15 pics and plenty of guff from the Audi PR crew can be viewed after the jump.

Carmageddon GM Holden News

The bigger they are, the harder they fall

GM logo

The rumours and speculation have finally been fulfilled. General Motors, once the biggest car manufacturer in the world, has now filed for bankruptcy.

The good news for Australia’s Holden is that it will remain unaffected by the bankruptcy proceedings which only affect US operations. “Holden is a subsidiary of GM but we are a corporate entity in our own right – an independent company under Australian law,” Holden Chairman and Managing Director, Mark Reuss, said today. “Beyond that, GM has indicated that Holden will be an important part of the New GM.”

Mark Reuss will be holding a press conference at 9am this morning and that will be webcast on audio and video or audio only web portals. Holden has also released an FAQ statement.

A statement from GM Chairman Kent Kresa is shown below, and a full media statement from Holden can be read after the jump. For more check out GM’s Facts & Fiction website.

Kent Kresa: “The General Motors Board of Directors authorized the filing of a chapter 11 case with regret that this path proved necessary despite the best efforts of so many. Today marks a new beginning for General Motors. A court-supervised process and transfer of assets will enable a New GM to emerge as a stronger, healthier, more focused and nimbler company with a determination not to just survive but to excel. The Board concluded that the proposed transformation will maximize the value of the enterprise, and the return to the many stakeholders who have been involved with GM over the years.

We are appreciative of the support from the US Treasury, the President’s Task Force on Autos, the UAW and its members, salaried employees and retirees, concurring bondholders, and very importantly, the American taxpayers. The Board is confident that this New GM can operate successfully in the intensely competitive US market and around the world. The Board stands behind the people of GM in embracing this unique opportunity to create value and a new company that will design, engineer, build and market the best cars and trucks in world.”
