Drivers Republic – it was fun while it lasted

Drivers Republic ceases publication

Earlier in the year the team at Drivers Republic was boasting about their growth in traffic. Now, sadly, their most recent communication tells of their demise.

The following text was taken from their email update, received earlier today.

“Unfortunately this is our final newsletter since DR has closed its doors and will no longer be publishing the features and videos that we’ve become so renowned for.

There has been plenty of speculation across the internet about the reasons why this has occurred, and despite the first impressions that it must have been for financial reasons, nothing could have been further from the truth.

Thanks to the participation of our readers and the generous support of the automotive industry we were in rude health and looking forward to a bumper year, but differences in our vision about future priorities have led to a parting of ways.”

The DR team has presented motoring fans across the globe with quality reporting, photography and opinion. But, it looks like that’s that, then. Shame really.

Volkswagen to take 42 per cent stake in Porsche

Volkswagen factory, Wolfsburg

The Porsche-Volkswagen tug of war has taken the first of its inevitable steps with an agreement that will see Volkswagen purchase a 42 per cent stake in Porsche by the end of the year. This bit of business will cost VW €3.3 billion.

It is the first step in a move that will see Volkswagen and Porsche form an “Integrated Automotive Group”. To you and me that means Volkswagen will own Porsche, but the sports car maker will maintain its independence. The merger is expected to be complete by 2011 with details outlining the deal to be announced in a few weeks.

Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of Volkswagen AG, stated: “Volkswagen and Porsche today took a decisive step towards a joint future. As a group with now ten strong, independent brands we will further expand our unique global position. More than ever before, we now have what it takes to become the automotive industry’s number one.

“Additional new growth opportunities will emerge for Porsche under the umbrella of the integrated group.

“I am convinced that the outcome of this integration will be the best vehicles for our customers, secure jobs and the creation of long-term value for our shareholders.”

Further coverage is available at FT.com and an extensive press statement from Volkswagen AG is available after the jump.

I know what you did last summer

CCTV

The Telegraph reports that Police in the UK record the movements of every British motorist, on average, almost 100 times per year. That’s an amazing figure, especially when you consider these images can be stored for as long as two years, although access to the stored data does become more strict after 90 days.

It is calculated the combined forces across Britain capture as many as 3 billion images per year using Automatic Number Plate Recognition. With 34 million registered vehicles in the UK that’s a lot of snaps of the Average Joe that are being kept on file.

Police say the images can help them solve crimes by tracking the movements of cars that are suspected of being involved in criminal behaviour. Not surprisingly civil rights campaigners are starting to ask a few questions.

Charles Hendry, Tory MP for Wealden, said: “There is a balance that needs to be struck between fighting crime and infringing the freedom of the law-abiding public.

“We all accept number-plate recognition enables the police to track and arrest a significant number of criminals and to make our communities safer, but these increases are really startling.

“Law-abiding people should feel they can go about their business without being snooped on by the State.”

I wonder how long it will be before Australian authorities cotton on to this idea?

I woldn't buy petrol from here

According to media reports Melbourne is suffering a dodgy fuel crisis. The contaminated petrol could force an engine replacement. The issue has prompted the industry body VACC, in association with Consumer Affairs Victoria, to release a special bulletin which advises motorists, in part, to “retain your proof of purchase, which may be a receipt or card transaction docket, identifying the time and date of purchase of fuel.”

The full release can be read after the jump.

Nissan 200SX car jacked during test drive

Nissan 200SX stolen during test drive

A teenager trying to sell his car got more than he bargained for when it was stolen at gun point during a test drive at around 9 o’clock last night. The incident took place at the intersection of Bent and Yeo Streets, near the seller’s home in Neutral Bay, Sydney.

The dark blue 1997 Nissan 200SX was advertised on carsales.com.au and the two men came to the north-shore home under the pretence of buying the car. Shortly after agreeing to join the men on a test drive the seller was threatened with a gun and forced out of the car. Fortunately, the 19-year-old was not hurt during the ordeal.

Given the car is over 10 years old and not especially desirable in its own right one could speculate that the offenders are hoping to use the car for further crime related activities.

The registration of the stolen Nissan is AT58ZV. Police have asked anyone who sees the car or who may have witnessed last night’s incident to come forward by calling Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. A brief description of the alleged thieves can be found on the link below.

Schumacher is back!

Michael Schumacher returns to F1

Headlines around the globe are announcing the return of, who many consider to be the world’s greatest ever Formula One racer, Michael Schumacher.

Although, interestingly, there is just a brief statement on the Ferrari website which states rather coyly:

Maranello, 29 July 2009 – “Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro intends to put Michael Schumacher in Felipe Massa’s car until the Brazilian driver will be able to race again. Michael Schumacher said he is ready and, over the next few days, will undertake a specifc training programme at the end of which confermation will be given of his participation in the Championship with effect from the European Grand Prix on the 23rd of August.”

However, it does seem certain that the seven time world champion will return to the F1 starting grid in just a few weeks. Of course, the ban on in-season testing means Schumacher cannot get behind the wheel of Ferrari’s F1 car until Friday practice at the European Grand Prix, to be held in Valencia, 21-23 August. It will be his first start in Formula One since the end of the 2006 season.

In related news Felipe Massa is expected to make a full recovery after his horrifying incident in qualifying at last weekend’s Hungarian Grand Prix. Although, it remains unclear if he will be able to return to racing this season. If so, that would leave Schumacher to fill in for seven races.

By their standards, Ferrari’s season to date has been dreadful. But, after Kimi Raikonnen’s strong showing last weekend, where he finished second, it looks as though Ferrari are on the improve. Will we see Schumacher on the winner’s podium again?

Wolfgang Porsche sets date for rescue talks

Porsche logo

Family disputes fought out in a boardroom nearly always end in tears. When you’re feuding over the future of one of the world’s most loved motoring brands then the stakes are taken to an even higher level. Porsche chairmain, Wolfgang Porsche, is attempting to lay down the law by setting showdown talks for July 23 to decide on the company’s future.

In short, there will be two plans on the table. Should the company seek financial input from the Qatar Investment Authority, or sell 49% of the business to Volkswagen? Given Porsche has been desperately trying to take control of Volkswagen itself, this makes the latter scenario even more intriguing. This also puts to rest any future merger talks between Porsche and VW.

Handing over any financial control to anyone outside of the Porsche extended family had previously been a subject that dare not be mentioned. Now, though, with near crippling debt levels approaching €10 billion, extreme measures must be considered.

So, which plan will win? The Wolfgang Porsche favoured Qatar option, or the plan sell almost half of the business to Volkswagen, as championed by Volkswagen chairman, and Porsche shareholder, Ferdinand Piëch.

Those who have been following the Porsche-Volkswagen saga will know the answer could still be months away. Even those attending the extraordinary supervisory board meeting on July 23 anticipate a conclusion may not be reached.

UPDATE 19 July: Autoblog reports that a deal may be close to agreement that would see Volkswagen buy out Porsche for €8 billion, to be paid in two instalments.

On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair

Ferrari California

…warm smell of policemen, rising up through the air.

Media outlets in Western Australia are reporting the story of a brand new Ferrari California being impounded under anti-hoon laws. The car is one of just two in the country and is part of Ateco Automotive’s press fleet, in WA for media testing.

According to Perth Now the lure of opening up the California’s 338kW V8 was too much to resist for Financial Review motoring hack Rob Easdown. It is believed Mr Easdown was clocked speeding at 231km/h. According to reports the offence took place near Toodyay, in the Western Australian wheatbelt.

WA Police have impounded the $470,000 Calfornia for seven days. Oops!

Welcome to Wowserville, population Australia

BMW Z4 - The art of driving

Last month the Advertising Standards Bureau upheld a complaint that the BMW Z4 “art of driving” television commercial portrayed behaviour that would be deemed a “very serious driving offence” if it took place on Australian roads.

BMW have agreed to stop the ad going to air, however the commercial can still be viewed on the BMW Australia website. Sample footage of the Z4 painting with its wheels was first posted on AUSmotive in December 2008.

The full report from the ASB, which shows text from the original complainant and BMW’s response, can be downloaded here (76kb PDF).

It is clear the commercial is not depicting regular road driving. A point highlighted by BMW in their defence of the complaint. However, this was not enough and the commerical was found to breach section 2c of the FCAI Voluntary Code of Practice for Motor Vehicle Advertising.

That is, if the actions depicted in the ad “were to take place on a road or road related area, (that they would) breach any Commonwealth law”.

The fact that some killjoy found it fit to complain about this ad in the first place is disturbing enough. But the fact that protocols are in place that saw this worldwide advertising campaign removed from Australian television screens is, simply, laughable.

BMW are well known for both the safety of their vehicles and their Driver Training education programs. They are clearly not an organisation that exists to promote hooning. Nor do they have anything to gain by doing so. That they have, in effect, been labelled as hoons is verging on outrageous.

Moreover, for a small sum of money one can legally partake in similar activities as depicted in this ad under the supervision of independent and respected driver training instructors.

AUSmotive finds this ruling by the ASB unfathomable. As a sign of protest against this decision AUSmotive will feature the “offending” footage on the first day of every month for the rest of 2009.

BMW’s press release from April this year announcing the “art of driving” campaign can be read after the jump.
