Mercedes C63 AMG achieves world’s longest drift

Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG

A standard Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG has smoked its way to the record books by claiming the world’s longest drift. The stunt took place at Mercedes-Benz World in the UK and the V8 powered C63 was driven by pro driver Mauro Calo.

Calo managed to hold his powerslide for a total of 2308 metres, bettering the previous mark, held by US drift ace Vaughn Gittin Jr, by a healthy 394 metres.

On the short circular track Calo hoped to complete a total of 12 laps. Unfortunately for him his rear tyres didn’t last that long.

“The car was so balanced. I was relaxed and only had to make small corrections to the steering and throttle. Then the tyres let go after lap seven, but I kept on going until I knew I’d beaten the record. I’m absolutely chuffed,” explained Calo.

Vaughn Gittin Jr has dismissed Calo’s efforts telling Autoblog, “[there are] thousands of grassroots drifters, that can do giant donuts until the tires pop, as well.”

Video of the new record feat can be seen after the break.

F1 teams concerned over handling of Bahrain GP

2010 Bahrain GP

With a Grand Prix weekend ahead of them Formula One teams are expressing their concerns over the handling of the Bahrain race. Currently, the official stance says Bahrain has been reinstated for 30 October and the inaugural Indian Grand Prix has been pushed back until 11 December.

FOTA represents 11 of of 12 F1 teams and has written a letter to the FIA stating, “the amended 2011 calendar is unrealistic.” A copy of the letter can be seen below, where concerns over safety and logistics are outlined, along with matters of protocol that should be followed when making alterations to the agreed calendar.

Meanwhile, in an interview with Autosport the Team Principals from Red Bull Racing, Christian Horner, and Lotus Renault GP, Eric Bouillier have placed their thoughts on record.

Christian Horner: “It’s an unfortunate situation. Obviously with the way things have been handled, with the uncertainty, maybe it could have been handled better, but we are where we are.”

Eric Boullier: “F1 is a non-political sport. We cannot do whatever we want, because there are issues like this. We need to be a little bit more cautious.”

Organisers for the Indian Grand Prix have also written to the FIA to lodge their complaint over the rescheduling of their race.

It can now only be a matter of days before the FIA responds to these concerns. One would expect the Bahrain race to be finally scrapped from the 2011 calendar and the Indian GP to be moved back to 30 October. But as the great Murray Walker once said, “Anything can happen in Formula 1, and it usually does!”

UPDATE: The BBC has more and quotes FIA President, Jean Todt, “I have listened to your [the teams’] last-minute objections and have asked the commercial rights holder to re-examine his calendar proposal, and if necessary, to submit a revised proposal to the World Council.”

Interesting that Todt is looking to drop Bernie into the frying pan and distance the FIA from the decision to reinstate the Bahrain GP.

Bahrain GP: What the hell is going on?

2010 Bahrain GP

Just days after the FIA’s World Motor Sport Council (WMSC) declared it was safe to reschedule the Bahrain Grand Prix in 2011 the future of the event now finds itself in total disarray.

First, Mark Webber expressed his disapproval when he said, “It’s obvious that the parties involved have struggled to reach a decision but sadly I feel that they still haven’t made the right one.”

And in the days that have followed the dissent has grown to a stage where it’s virtually untenable to race in Bahrain in 2011.

Former FIA whipping boy President, Max Mosley, pointed out the WMSC broke its own rules by altering the 2011 calendar before gaining approval from all the teams. In an interview with BBC Radio4 Mosely said, “I don’t think there is the slightest chance the grand prix will actually happen. Apart from anything else, you cannot change the calendar in the way that it’s proposed to change without the unanimous agreement of the teams.”

FOTA, the body representing 11 of the 12 current F1 teams, has thrown its hat into the ring by writing to the FIA demanding the plans to return to Bahrain this year are scrapped amid fears of safety and logistical concerns.

Ken Block to bring Gymkhana tour down under

Ken Block

Ken Block, global YouTube phenomenon and slightly less successful WRC driver, is bringing his Gymkhana tour to Australia. Crazy Ken will ripping it up at Calder Park in Melbourne on 3 September.

The best part? Tickets will be free. Those wishing to attend will need to enter a ballot in order to secure tickets to the event; details are still being finalised.

Block reckons we should all try and get along, “One of the great things about the Gymkhana World Tour down in Australia is that it’s free to the public, so everyone can come. I hope everybody that wants to see it can make it out because it’s going be amazing.

“Watching the gymkhana car slide around live in-person is much better than seeing it in video, so I hope everyone that is interested in seeing this can make it out.”

As you can expect Monster Energy Drinks and Ford won’t be missing out on the opportunity to gain publicity from this event. That means it’s probably worth keeping an eye on the Monster website, where further detail on this event will be published.

After the break you can see the teaser clip for the Gymkhana down under tour. And if, somehow, you’ve never heard of Ken Block, or seen his work, then check out this earlier AUSmotive post and see what all the fuss is about.

Mark Webber slams Bahrain GP decision

Mark Webber

Mark Webber has published his thoughts on the decision to reschedule the Bahrain Grand Prix for 30 October and it’s fair to say he’s not happy.

“In my personal opinion, the sport should have taken a much firmer stance earlier this year rather than constantly delaying its decision in hope of being able to re-schedule it in 2011,” says Webber.

“It would have sent a very clear message about F1’s position on something as fundamental as human rights and how it deals with moral issues. It’s obvious that the parties involved have struggled to reach a decision but sadly I feel that they still haven’t made the right one. Like it or not, F1 and sport in general isn’t above having a social responsibility and conscience. I hope F1 is able to return to Bahrain eventually but now isn’t the right time.”

On the surface, Webber’s position is admirable. Assuming all is equal between now and late October, will Mark back his beliefs and choose not to race?

Leaked images of new BMW 1 Series hatch

BMW F20 1 Series hatch

Official pics and details of BMW’s new F20 1 Series hatch weren’t due for another few weeks, however the recent appearance of leaked images is expected to force BMW’s hand. Indeed, we could be seeing authorised info form Munich as soon as tomorrow morning.

So, then, what do we make of the rounder and slightly larger F20 1er? We expect first thoughts may be mixed, with a bias towards negative comments. However, the current 1 Series hatch has never really set the world on fire and people’s opinions of its styling have mellowed over time. The same is likely to happen again with the newer model.

It’s worth noting the interior seems to have taken a clear step forward. It’s not that the previous 1 Series interior was bad, just that, on these pics, the new model has made noticeable improvements.

One tidbit worth digesting on what we can see here is BMW’s use of gloss black and matt aluminium wing mirrors; styling cues used by Volkswagen and Audi to differentiate their performance models from their cheaper cars. Coincidence?

More pics after the break, and we’ll being you the official detail as soon as we can.

Bathurst 12 Hour goes from strength to strength

Audi R8 LMS

It’s less than two years since the Bathurst 12 Hour race was chasing a naming rights sponsor, but new plans to widen eligibility have organisers hoping the race will become a regular stop on the worldwide endurance calendar.

Already the race has attracted interest from the Audi factory team, no doubt to return in 2012 to defend their one-two victory earlier this year. And after striking a deal with Dutch company Creventic—promoters of the Dubai 24 Hour, Barcelona 24 Hour and Hungary 12 Hour—Bathurst promoters hope freight assistance packages will encourage more overseas teams to Mount Panorama.

Bathurst 12 Hour event director James O’Brien says, “This is another step forward in establishing the Armor All Bathurst 12 Hour as one of the premier international endurance races.

“In our first year including GT vehicles in the eligibility structure, we attracted six international entrants including three from New Zealand, one from Ireland and the two-car Audi Race Experience team from Germany that would go on to finish 1-2 in the race.

“We would hope that the result of this partnership is an increase of between 8-12 international entrants in the 2012 race to complement a stronger domestic grid.”

The 2012 Bathurst 12 Hour will take place on 24–26 February.

News Corp confirms Formula One interest

2011 Chinese GP

Last month’s story about News Corp considering forming a consortium to buy the rights to Formula One has suddenly become more serious with confirmation that the, erm, wheels are in motion.

News Corporation and Italian investment company EXOR released a joint statement which reads, “EXOR, one of Europe’s largest listed investment companies, and News Corporation, the global media group, confirm that they are in the early stages of exploring the possibility of creating a consortium with a view to formulating a long-term plan for the development of Formula 1 in the interests of the participants and the fans.

“Over the coming weeks and months, EXOR and News Corporation will approach potential minority partners and key stakeholders in the sport. There can be no certainty that this will lead to an approach to Formula 1’s current owners.”

EXOR is controlled by the Agnelli family, who have close ties to Ferrari. Indeed, the company owns 30% of Italian car giant Fiat, owners of Ferrari, as well as a 60% stake in Juventus football club.

Robert Kubica ready for next stage of recovery

Robert Kubica

Great news for Robert Kubica with confirmation he has been released from hospital a few days ahead of schedule. He continues to recover well following his rally accident in February and will now spend a few days at his home in Monaco before heading to Italy to enter the next stage of his rehabilitation.

In a recent interview on the Lotus Renault GP website Kubica shared news of his progress revealing, “The mobility of my hand is limited but this is pretty normal in this kind of situation, because the connected arm muscles are still very weak due to the long period of immobility. Things are definitely improving day by day.”
