Malaysian Government sells its share in Proton

Proton dealership

News reports tell us the Malaysian Government has sold its stake in Proton for a reported AU$401m. An announcement on the implications for Lotus, owned by Proton, is expected in the next 24 hours or so.

Khazanah Nasional, the state owned investment company, sold its 42.7% share in Proton Holdings to DRB-Hicom, which has also agreed to submit an offer to buy Proton’s remaining shares. The total deal could be around AU$933m.

DRB-Hicom has links to European car makers Mercedes and Volkswagen as well as Honda. It is hoped the cash-injection and renewed impetus from Proton’s new owners will help revive its recent flagging fortunes.

Season’s greetings to all our readers

Mark Webber wins 2011 Brazilian Grand Prix

We’d like to wish all or readers a safe and happy festive season. We’ve been forced into an earlier break than we’d like due to a tradesman accidentally cutting the phone line at AUSmotive HQ. It’s due to be fixed today, but like many of you we’ll be hitting the road later today on our way to spend Christmas with family.

A reminder to stay safe and to bring a calm and sharing attitude to the roads. Don’t forget it’s a double demerit period as well.

We’ll also be taking some time off until the second week in January and so any updates during that time are likely to be sporadic.

Wishing you all the best and thanks for your readership throughout the year.

Channel Ten confirms live F1 coverage in 2012

2011 Brazilian GP

Channel Ten has advised via its @tensporttv twitter account that they will be broadcasting all Formula One races live in 2012. “We will be showing all races live and exclusive,” the tweet reads.

Concerns over local free-to-air (FTA) coverage were raised when the BBC, the source network for Australia’s current F1 broadcasts, signed a shared rights agreement with pay TV network Sky Sports. That new agreement will commence next year and will see the BBC cover around half of the season live, with the remaining races to be broadcast as a highlights package shortly after each race has finished.

Sky Sports will cover every race live and has lured Martin Brundle from the Beeb with a lucrative contract rumoured to be around £1 million per year.

While Ten can confirm they will provide FTA coverage of all races in 2012, the source of the television feed has not been decided. “Details regarding commentary are being finalised, and once confirmed we will let you know,” the station advises.

UPDATE: Ten also confirms qualifying sessions will continue to be shown live.

UPDATE 16 March 2012: Confirmation has come through that One will take their live feed from SkySports.

Porsche 962 in Melbourne for Motorclassica

Porsche 962

The annual Motorclassica Concours d’Elegance and Classic Motor Show is being held in Melbourne this weekend. In fact the doors open this morning. We gave you a teaser for Motorclassica during our AIMS coverage.

Yesterday this stunning and genuinely classic Porsche 962 arrived in readiness for the show. The 962 dominated sportscar racing in the 1980s, claiming the Le Mans 24 hour race in 1986 and 1987, among many other titles. The Dauer 962 won Le Mans in 1994 as well.

Derek Bell is a five-time winner at Le Mans, his last two victories were at the wheel of the 962. After the break there’s two more photos and a short clip. We like the following text from the description of the video:

“Watched as this classic 962 was unloaded from a tray table truck. Once unloaded, Derek Bell strode over, jumped in, started her up and casually drove into the Royal Exhibition Building.”

ABC TV: Wide Open Road

Wide Open Road

While watching the misery of the Wallabies’ demise at the hands of New Zealand in the Rugby World Cup we managed to catch a glimpse at the first episode from a three-part series on ABC1 about Australia’s history and infatuation with the motor car. Wide Open Road promises to explore the reasons why “the car has been tangled up in the social, political and economic fabric of Australia.”

If you missed the first episode you can catch up on ABC iView or via the program’s website. You’ll learn that in the early decades of the 20th century unofficial attempts to break the speed record for the Melbourne–Sydney drive on dusty tracks were commonplace. Nine hours was the benchmark, would you believe! You’ll also wonder why Francis Birtles, who spent much of 1928 driving his Bean 14 from London to Melbourne, isn’t revered as highly as the likes of pilot Sir Charles Kingsford Smith, who achieved fame for his solo flight from the Unites States to Australia in the same year.

The remaining episodes are due to air at 7:30pm on the following two Sundays (23 and 30 October). From the portions we saw last night we recommend finding the time to watch the show.

CAMS announces Peter Brock Medal

Peter Brock, A9X Torana

CAMS has just announced a new award called the Peter Brock Medal. It will be awarded for the first time this December to the driver who has demonstrated outstanding ability while also displaying a fair and sportsmanlike attitude.

Craig Lowndes, a member of the five-person selection panel, says “I think a medal in Peter Brock’s honour should recognise his positive contribution to the sport generally, and his help for young drivers trying to make their way in the sport.

“Peter’s legacy is that he had time for everyone… time to help and encourage every driver, time for every fan.”

Others on the official Selection Committee are Peter’s son James, four-time Australian Rally Champion co-driver Coral Taylor, journalist Paul Gover, and Garry Connelly AM (Chairman of the CAMS Honours and Awards Committee).

Nominations are currently open and must be lodged with CAMS by Tuesday 18 October.

Manish Pandey talks about Senna DVD release

Senna: The movie

Manish Pandey the film maker behind the Senna documentary has spoken about the extra material included on the DVD release of the film.

Speaking to James Allen he said, “We’ve added in many of the interviews we filmed, we show them as extended talking heads; there is a lot of Alain Prost, Ron Dennis, a lot of the key journalists. What we are able to do is be more forensic about some of the events that took place.

“Another key feature is the whole of Gerry Donaldson’s interview with Ayrton from 1989, when he was quite down, which culminates in his speech about Monaco 1988, which takes in his spirituality, and his philosophy as a driver.”

Senna is due for DVD release in the UK on 10 October. If you’re keen to get your hands on a copy now check eBay where there seem to be plenty of options available.

UK authorities plan motorway speed limit increase

M1 motorway, England

The British Government has plans to increase the speed limit on its motorways from 70mph (113km/h) to 80mph (129km/h).

The current 70mph was introduced in 1965 and statistics show the rate of road deaths in Britain have dropped by 75% since then. A survey held earlier this year by the Institute of Advanced Motoring revealed over 70% of those surveyed support an increase in motorway limits.

Studies have also shown that 49% of UK motorists admit to breaking the current 70mph limit on a regular basis. While 60% say they would be more likely to adhere to an 80mph limit.

Transport Secretary, Philip Hammond, says: “It is time to put Britain back in the fast lane of global economies and look again at the motorway speed limit which is nearly 50 years old, and out of date thanks to huge advances in safety and motoring technology.

“Increasing the motorway speed limit to 80mph would generate economic benefits of hundreds of millions of pounds through shorter journey times. So we will consult later this year on raising the limit to get Britain moving.”

World’s vehicle population tops 1 billion

Port Kembla

The world’s garage has passed one billion vehicles for the first time according research carried out by Wards Auto. The figures are based on 2010 data and tell us the United States heads the list when sorted by country, with a staggering 239.8 million motor vehicles.

The US numbers are put in perspective when compared against the emerging market of China, which has achieved its highest ranking, reaching second place but still a long way behind, with a bit over 78 million units. Japan sits third with just under 74 million vehicles.

Unsurprisingly the United States also tops the list when looking at each country’s vehicle-to-person ratio. With a ratio of 1:1.3, in theory, around 77% of Americans have a vehicle of some sort. In contrast, China’s ratio is 1:17.2 and India (20.8 million vehicles) sees just one in every 56.3 people with a vehicle.

Italy is ranked second behind the US for vehicle-to-person ratios (1:1.45) with France, Japan and the UK all roughly the same (1:1.7). Overall, the world population is 6.9 billion (1:6.75 vehicles to people).

[Source: WardsAuto]

UPDATE 20 August: Thanks to Jim Rutherford from the FCAI for pointing us in the direction of Australian figures from the ABS, which tell us there were 12.5 million passenger vehicles at last count. Based on the current population of 22.7 million Australia has a ratio of one vehicle for every 1.8 people.

VIDEO: Ken Block ‘Gymkhana 4’

Ken Block - Gymkhana 4

The master of spin, Ken Block, is back with a new Gymkhana release. It’s the fourth in his well known franchise; we use that term deliberately as this latest video is packed with commercial content. Perhaps this should come as no surprise when the clip is sub-titled ‘The Hollywood Megamercial’.

In GYM4 the driving is pure entertainment. There’s some excellent footage captured as Block negotiates his way around various movie sets. We just hope when the inevitable Gymkhana 5 is produced they go a bit easy on the ads.

The full 9 minutes of ‘hoonigan’ is yours after the break. To recapture the vibe from Ken’s first three installments, click here.
