Looks like Tony Fernandes is true to his word

At the start of the year Tony Fernandes told his Caterham F1 team he thought they were under performing and that if he didn’t see improved results in the 2104 season he would walk. “If we’re at the back I don’t think I’m going to carry on,” he said.

Well, with the CT05 proving to be as effective as it is ugly, word on the street says Fernandes is about to walk.

Under the ownership of Fernandes Caterham is yet to score a world championship point and the team currently sits at the bottom of the standings in the constructors’ championship. We’re also guessing Tony wouldn’t have worn his trademark smile when fellow backmarker Marussia scored its first points at the Monaco Grand Prix a few weeks back.

It’s been tipped that Fernandes will announce his sale and departure from the F1 team tomorrow, although he will maintain control of Caterham’s road car division.

Is Ricciardo being favoured over Vettel?

Right from the season outset Daniel Ricciardo has shown he’s neither intimdated nor inferior to Red Bull Racing’s golden child Sebastian Vettel. The young Aussie is comfortably ahead of the four-time world champion in the 2014 standings and has more often than not been the best of the drivers left in the wake of the runaway Mercedes AMG drivers.

Neither of the Red Bull drivers had a weekend to remember in Austria, but Ricciardo collected some consolation points, while Vettel suffered yet another retirement. Is Vettel’s poor run simply down to bad luck, or is it something more?

Jacques Villeneuve, the 1997 world champion who now works in the media, says something more sinister is at play.

“He’s a four-time World Champion who has earned the titles won, but now Red Bull Racing is treating him like they were to Mark Webber,” Villeneuve said in an interview with OmniCorse.it [translated].

Villeneuve goes on to suggest that the season is all but over for Vettel, as far as Red Bull is concerned.

“They seem to have decided to focus only on Daniel Ricciardo,” he added. “Now they want to ‘kill’ Sebastian because the German is not able to give another image of Red Bull. Of course, he cannot stand one more season.

“Helmut Marko has now also started to criticise him. When you lose control of the team and the policy begins to have an ever-increasing weight, you’re finished.”

Yet, Villeneuve’s most emphatic statement was yet to come. The former F1 champ says Vettel must leave Red Bull Racing.

“Vettel is finished there, he needs to change team.”

According to Villeneuve Ferrari would be Vettel’s most likely destination, claiming Alonso will be tired of carrying the team on his own, while Raikkonen lacks the finesse to drive a modern F1 car.

These comments from Villeneuve, made early last week, may well be chasing headlines, but what a headline!

After one of his team’s most lack lustre grands prix in some time Red Bull Racing Team Principal Christian Horner made it clear where he thinks the blame rests for the under performing RB10.

Horner is clearly unhappy with the reliability of the Renault power unit. “It’s frustrating that we’re in the situation that we are,” he said, speaking to Autosport.

“We’ve won all the races and all the championships that we’ve achieved with Renault power. But the situation just isn’t improving at the moment.

“The reliability is unacceptable. The performance is unacceptable. There needs to be change at Renault. It can’t continue like this. It’s not good for Renault and it’s not good for Red Bull.

“We need to work together as partners. There will not be another engine in the back of the car next year, but we want to be competitive and we want to run at the front.”

For their part, Renault isn’t shying away from its responsibilities.

“The anxiety that Christian feels, and the frustration he feels after a result that is not at the full potential of the performance of car and power unit, is completely understandable and shared by us,” acknowledged Renault deputy managing director Rob White.

“But we are completely committed to making progress as fast as we possibly can and I think we have shown signs of progress before now. This is a process that is completely shared with Red Bull, and the objectives are known and understood.”

We’re sorry to Valtteri Bottas that we can’t get a photo of him on the podium, but he’ll have to have a crack at Williams for being so tight with the images they release to the little people like us.

Meanwhile, Daniel Ricciardo explained a mistake at Turn 1 was responsible for a difficult day.

“It’s never nice going backwards on the first lap,” said Daniel. “Off the line, it was actually one of our better starts this year, although I think Kevin (Magnussen) on the inside got a better one.

“I tried to hang around on the outside, which was the wrong thing to do, because you basically lose too much on the exit. So I then got swamped on the long straight. We already struggle on the long straights as it is, but even more when you get a poor exit. So I was frustrated with myself and I will have to look if maybe I could have cut to the inside and done anything better.

“The last lap move put a little smile on my face, but other than that it wasn’t a great race for us—we’ve got a bit of work to do.”

The full transcript from the first three drivers is available after the break. It was nice to see Mark Webber doing the podium interviews, too. Although, we reckon it would have been better to see him racing in the Nürburgring 24 Hour race instead.

Nico Rosberg wins 2014 Austrian GP

2014 Austrian Grand Prix

Nico Rosberg has won his third grand prix of the season after taking out the Austrian Grand Prix overnight. His victory margin of 1.9 seconds over Mercedes AMG teammate Lewis Hamilton sees the German extend his world championship lead to 29 points.

Hamilton started from P9 but put in a sterling opening lap to be fighting for fourth by the second lap. He did have some minor concerns with overheating brakes again, as did Rosberg, but they were still too fast for everyone else.

In third place was Valtteri Bottas for Williams. That’s the Finn’s best result in Formula 1 to date and as you’d expect he was very happy with his day, despite starting the race from P2.

Felipe Massa came home fourth and may have hoped for more after making a clean start from pole position. In the end the Mercedes pair had too much race pace and both were able to get ahead of the Williams duo during routine pit stops.

Fernando Alonso just went about his business as usual for Ferrari and put in another honest and reliable performance to finish fifth. The dual world champion has had an unspectacular year by his standards, but continues to achieve the best results available to him it would seem.

Sergio Perez collected good points for Force India with P6.  Thanks to an alternate tyre strategy he led the race for a while, too, which he would be happy with after starting from P15.

McLaren’s Kevin Magnussen was seventh, his best result since he inherited P2 from Daniel Ricciardo at the Australian Grand Prix in the season’s opening race.

Ricciardo was the sole flickering light on a dirty day for Red Bull at its home track. Daniel finished eighth thanks to a last lap pass on Nico Hulkenberg.

Sadly for Red Bull, though, everything else went pear shaped. Sebastian Vettel momentarily lost power in the opening laps and seemed to be headed for retirement. His car did right itself for some time, but he was called into the pits to retire at around half-race distance.

Red Bull-owned Toro Rosso fared worse, with both cars retiring from the race without making any impact.

After a brief moment of respite from Ricciardo in Canada and Williams locking out the front row for this race, the status quo of a Mercedes one-two result has returned. Crucially, though, Nico Rosberg now enjoys the luxury of championship lead greater than a race win.

Well, that’s until we get to the double points race in Bahrain to end the year.

Ferrari denies F1 exit rumours

For some time now there’s been talk Ferrari could join the resurgent LMP1 category in the World Endurance Championship. For one thing this would ensure Porsche has a harder time claiming outright victory at Le Mans. But also Ferrari is often at loggerheads with Formula 1 authorities as both parties throw their weight around to get what they want.

Then we had Fernando Alonso on hand at Le Mans over the weekend to give the endurance classic its official start and, hey presto, Ferrari is about to quit F1. Or so a few rumours suggested.

Not so fast kiddies! This is Ferrari’s official statement of rebuttal:

Some elements of the media have suggested Ferrari would quit Formula 1 to concentrate on the Le Mans 24 Hours and Endurance racing. This is a bit of a stretch based on President Luca di Montezemolo reiterating that Formula 1 needs to evolve and renew itself, while also admitting that there is a unique attraction to the 24 Hour race.

To say that after 2020, Ferrari could quit Formula 1 to concentrate on Le Mans and the Endurance championship takes his words to extremes. Plus of course, there’s nothing to stop Ferrari upping the ante and competing in both disciplines. So it’s just pure speculation.

“He is not in a coma anymore”

A long time has passed since we last had any news on the health of Michael Schumacher. But we’re pleased to report his family brings us an update via a statement published by manager Sabine Kehm. As much as it can be, this is bloody good news:

“Michael has left the CHU Grenoble to continue his long phase of rehabilitation. He is not in a coma anymore.

“His family would like to explicitly thank all his treating doctors, nurses and therapists in Grenoble as well as the first aiders at the place of the accident, who did an excellent job in those first months.

“The family also wishes to thank all the people who have sent Michael all the many good wishes to Michael. We are sure it helped him.

“For the future we ask for understanding that his further rehabilitation will take place away from the public eye.”

All the best Michael, all the best.

A lap of the Red Bull Ring

The next race on the 2014 F1 calendar is the Austrian Grand Prix (22 June). It sees a return to the old A1-Ring site, which last hosted an F1 event in 2003. The track has since been bought and redeveloped by Red Bull and now it’s pretty much a giant advertising theme park.

Giving us a brief overview of the new 4.3km Red Bull Ring layout are Sebastian Vettel and Daniel Ricciardo in this very slick animation. Really, the graphics are first class.

In addition to the video animation Red Bull has provided three wallpaper images. All of which you can see after the break.

Mark v Daniel: The first win

Mark Webber and Daniel Ricciardo celebrate their maiden grand prix wins

While we’re still in the afterglow of Daniel Ricciardo’s maiden grand prix win it’s timely to compare the immediate in-car reaction of Daniel with Mark Webber after his first F1 victory (see video after the break).

The circumstances leading to the wins for each is vastly different, in the paths their careers have taken and the circumstances in which those first wins took place.

For Mark his career was a hard graft and his win in at the 2009 German Grand Prix was in the bag a long time before the chequered flag.

In contrast, Daniel’s win in Canada came by surprise, almost, and he’s enjoyed a much smoother path into F1. Daniel has also said he was not comfortable celebrating in the car too much until he knew that Felipe Massa and Sergio Perez were okay after their race-ending crash.

Sir Jack Brabham trophy for Australian Grand Prix

CAMS has today announced the winning trophy for the Australian Grand Prix will now be called the Sir Jack Brabham trophy. It is a fitting tribute for Sir Jack, who passed away on 19 May.

The current trophy design, being shown off by Nico Rosberg above, already references Sir Jack with the design based on the steering wheel from his 1959 championship winning Cooper Climax.

Sir Jack’s widow, Lady Brabham, was honoured to accept the renaming of the trophy.

“I have been overwhelmed by the tributes that have been pouring in from around the globe,” Lady Brabham said. “It has been comforting to hear kind words from the likes of Jean Todt, Sir Stirling Moss, Sir Jackie Stewart to Alan Jones. Jack would have been so very proud.”

Daniel Ricciardo, fresh from his stunning win in Montreal yesterday morning, says he would one day love to lift the Sir Jack Brabham trophy for himself one day.

“What he [Sir Jack Brabham] achieved was incredible,” Daniel said. “Paying tribute to him each year with the Australian Grand Prix winner’s trophy is a fantastic way to celebrate this legend. It would be something very special to be able to lift that trophy.

“Racing at the Australian Grand Prix in front of a home crowd is a huge buzz; to be able to stand on the top step of the podium and lift the Sir Jack Brabham Trophy would be incredible.”

The public will have the chance to honour the late Sir Jack Brabham at his State funeral on Wednesday 11 June at 1.30pm at the Church of Christ in Southport, Queensland.
