Drivers United

Mark Webber

In an era, as pointed out by Mark Webber, where a single footballer has been sold for enough money to run two F1 teams in Mosley’s world it is no surprise that Formula One teams are showing signs of frustration.

The ongoing saga of the £40M budget cap could be the wedge that forces F1 teams to start a breakaway competition. If that happens, it seems the drivers are on side.

Speaking to the BBC, Mark Webber states, “All the drivers share the same view. We want to drive for the best teams and race against the best drivers. If it’s not the FIA Formula 1 world championship, so be it. It’ll still be the most prestigious championship.

“It’s the first time ever pretty much all the teams have the same view. For the sake of the sport, the main constructors and people who have the real vision believe they need to take a stand.”

Dual world champion Fernando Alonso is more direct, “I prefer to race in any other category before the new F1.”

The D-day for a final decision is due when teams will be busy with Friday qualifying for the upcoming British Grand Prix. The drama is not lost on Toyota’s Jarno Trulli, “I know that in the next week something should budge, must move, otherwise there will inevitably be a split.”

Alonso, again, made his position clear stating the teams have tried their best to reach a satisfactory compromise, “(The teams) have done their maximum. Now the ball is in the FIA’s court.”

Formula One is, once again, proving that it is the pinnacle of motorsport both on and off the track. When the sport’s most important stakeholder’s are speaking in unison you would think FIA boss Max Mosley would listen. Perhaps the teams would be better served by negotiating with Max in a Chelsea dungeon.

Webber finishes second in Turkey

Mark Webber - Red Bull Racing RB5

Australia’s Mark Webber has finshed behind the unstoppable Jenson Button to claim his equal best F1 finish at the Turkish Grand Prix held in Istanbul. Webber’s second placing matches his result from the rain affected Shanghai race earlier in the year.

The boy from Queanbeyan started the race from fourth on the grid, behind his Red Bull Racing teammate Sebastien Vettel who held pole position. However, it was Webber’s superior two-stop strategy that saw him edge ahead of a fast finishing Vettel, who employed a three-stop plan.

Button’s win was his sixth from seven starts and the race was notable for the BrawnGP team as it saw their first retirement in a Grand Prix, with Rubens Barichello ending his race 10 laps from the end.

Button leads the title race on 61 points, 26 ahead of Barichello (35 points). Followed by the Red Bull Racing duo of Vettel (29 points) and Webber (27.5 points).

Toyota F1 parts for sale

Well, sort of. The Toyota F1 team is adding an exclusive line to its merchandise catalogue this year. “While stocks last” you can get your hands on front wings, rear wings, and even a rear wing, engine cover and undertray as one item. There seems to be enough on offer, including wheels and suspension parts, to buy your very own F1 car. It’s kind of like meccano, only bigger and better.

Prices start at around AU$360 a go up to AU$9000. The items are available online, although AUSmotive was having problems loading the website just now, perhaps you will have better luck.

Ferrari joins Toyota in F1 quit threat

Ferrari is threatening to make its withdrawal from Formula 1 permanent. So far in season 2009 the prancing horse has been trialling a quasi departure from F1 by running its cars towards the back of the field. Happy with this lack of progress and wildly unhappy at the planned budget cap due for introduction in 2010 the lads at Maranello look set to join Toyota by taking their bat and ball and going home.

Makes a change from a few weeks ago when Ferrari were talking of giving up on this season and starting plans for their 2010 car.

Of course, the nature of F1 dictates there is still an ocean of water to pass under this bridge before any of these announcements become set in stone. Still, makes for the most exciting F1 season in years, with both the on and off track action reaching similar peaks.

Oh, if you want to take Ferrari’s threat seriously you can read their full statement HERE.

Will Toyota finally lead the F1 pack?

Jarno Trulli at the 2009 Spanish Grand Prix

The latest rule changes earmarked for Formula One could propel Toyota to the head of the field. But not in the way the Japanese giant might like. Such is the dismay at the proposed £40M budget cap for the 2010 season that Toyota team boss John Howett said if the outlined changes stay as they are Toyota will withdraw from F1.

Howett also claims that Toyota would not be the only team to pull out of F1 should the budget cap proposal come to fruition.

“If nothing changes, we won’t be submitting an entry,” Howett told Reuters at the Spanish Grand Prix. “But I don’t think that is a unique opinion among other competitors.”

The draft budget cap plan will offer teams who abide by the £40M limit greater technical freedoms and advantages that many in the F1 paddock think would be insurmountable for teams operating outside the cap. It’s kind of ironic that a team with an operating budget under £40M could produce a car as much as two seconds a lap quicker than a team with no spending limit. However, that is the belief Patrick Head from Williams holds, as reported on autoblog (link below).

Okay, so why don’t all teams comply with the cap? Well, such is the degree of spending in the sport now that a reduction in budgets would bring countless job losses as teams would need to sack staff in order to comply.

Mark Webber claims podium finish in Spain

Mark Webber

Mark Webber finished in third place at the Spanish Formula One Grand Prix overnight. This is the Australian’s fourth F1 career podium finish and adds to his second placing at Shanghai last month.

In a race that followed recent Formula One trends not a hell of a lot happened during the race. Indeed, it was Webber’s pass on Alonso after a Safety Car restart that was one of the best highlights from the race.

Jenson Button and Rubens Barichello claimed another great result for BrawnGP, finishing first and second. Button’s fourth win of the year extends his Championship lead to 14 points.

Keep an eye on Formula1.com for comments from the top three drivers to be added soon.

Mark Webber claims best GP result in Shanghai

Mark Webber

Australia’s Mark Webber has finished second at the Chinese Formula One Grand Prix in Shanghai today. In a big day for Webber’s Red Bull Racing team, he finished behind teammate, and pole sitter, 22-year-old Sebastien Vettel. The second place marks a great comeback to fitness for Webber who badly broke his leg last November. It is his best ever finish in an F1 race, after twice finishing in third place (Monaco 2005, Williams; and Nürburgring 2007, Red Bull Racing).

The win is Red Bull Racing’s first Formula One success, and the 1-2 podium finish is a stunning result for Christian Horner’s team.

Championship leader Jenson Button, BrawnGP, finished the race in third position. Comments from all three drivers given at the post race press conference can be read at Formula1.com.

Ron Dennis quits Formula One

Ron Dennis quits F1

A restructure of the McLaren Group, lead by Ron Dennis, has seen the 61-year-old walk away from F1 completely. This follows January’s news that Dennis handed over the running of the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes team to Martin Whitmarsh.

In his role as Executive Chairman of McLaren Automotive, Dennis will lead the the new sports car business. Effective immediately, Dennis has handed his responsibility as Chief Executive Officer of McLaren Racing to Martin Whitmarsh. This is in addition to Whitmarsh’s role of Team Principal of Vodafone McLaren Mercedes.

Dennis, pictured above, at the McLaren Technology Centre with Richard Lapthorne, Non-Executive Chairman of McLaren Group, reflected on his F1 career at a press conference earlier today, “I admit I’m not always easy to get on with. I admit I’ve always fought hard for McLaren in Formula 1. I doubt if Max Mosley or Bernie Ecclestone will be displeased by my decision. But no-one asked me to do it. It was my decision.

“Equally, I was the architect of today’s restructure of the McLaren Group. Again, no-one asked me to do it. It was my decision.

“I feel enormously enthused about the prospects for the McLaren Group and for McLaren Automotive, and have no qualms about leaving Martin to report to the board regarding matters connected with Formula 1.”

Don’t try this at home

A publicity stunt has gone horribly wrong for Renault at Dubai Autodrome. A drag race bewteen a Renault R28 F1 car and a Ford GT40 ended abruptly when the driver of the F1 car lost control and smashed into the pitwall.

Middle Eastern Rally Champion Mohammed Ben Sulayem, was at the wheel of the Renault R28 and remained in the car for some time after the incident. However, it is believed he has escaped serious injury.

You can see amateur footage of the incident in the YouTube clip above and then delight at the irony of the song being played in the background at the end.

Jenson Button talks about the BGP 001

Jenson Button has just made it two race wins from two starts in 2009 at the Malaysian Grand Prix. The Brawn-Mercedes driver got off the line from pole position poorly and lost the lead to Nico Rosberg. However, he was able to regain the lead before the race was cancelled due to a monsoon-like storm.

This YouTube clip, from BrawnGP, shows Button full of optimism before jetting out to Melbourne for the Australian Grand Prix. Now, two races into the season, it makes for interesting viewing to listen to what Button has to say. You get the feeling that the strong pre-season form shown by BrawnGP left the team full of confidence. Looking at the subsequent results, you can see why.

A full table of results from the Malaysian Grand Prix can be accessed at Formula1.com.

You can take the boy out of Queanbeyan…

Webber drives Aussie muscle car

…but you can’t take the Queanbeyan out of the boy. No doubt, recent access to a high powered Aussie muscle car brought back plenty of Monaro Street memories from Mark Webber’s youth. Imagine if he had the keys to FPV F6 back in the day, he would have been the biggest show in town. Yes, even bigger than Barnsey performing at the Raiders Leagues Club.

Webber handed back the F6 to Ford Australia this morning, and says there are some things from home he always misses, “What a great car … this is what I miss in Europe … awesome Aussie muscle cars.”
