Jordan says Schumacher comeback is “going to happen”

Eddie Jordan

Eddie Jordan, the man who gave Michael Schumacher a start in Formula One, firmly believes the seven-time World Champion will race for Mercedes GP in 2010.

“The possibility is being actively pursued and I believe it is going to happen,” said Jordan.

Adding more fuel to the rumour mill, Jordan says the recruitment of Schumacher will be a stop gap measure until Mercedes can lure Sebastien Vettel away from Red Bull Racing.

Back to the Schumacher rumour, though. Jordan understands Schumacher is in negotiations with Ferrari to give him a full release from the Italian company. This would open the doors for Michael to reunite with Ross Brawn at Mercedes GP.

You can see the full interview with Eddie Jordan by clicking on the image above.

Mercedes, for their part, have neither confirmed or denied the possibility of what would be the biggest comeback story F1 has ever seen. “It’s clear that there will always be speculation as long as one cockpit is still free. And some speculations are nothing but dreams which will not come true,” said a spokesman for Mercedes-Benz.

Similarly, Schumacher’s spokeswoman Sabine Kehm is playing down the comeback rumours, “Michael is enjoying his life very much. To me, a return would therefore be highly unlikely at the moment,” she said.

However, Bernie Ecclestone is up to speed on this one and has been quoted as saying, “It would be fabulous for the sport.” Quite.

And in other news, Button has signed with McLaren

Button to McLaren

Given yesterday’s news, multiple reports tonight claiming Jenson Button has indeed signed with McLaren come as no surprise.

Button will hope he can maintain the image above and stay ahead of his new teammate and 2008 World Champion Lewis Hamilton. But, word on the interwebz suggests that Button is making a terrible mistake and will not be able hold a candle to the talents of Lewis Hamilton.

Whatever the case may be, you can bet the big winner out of this will be the sport’s rights holder Bernie Ecclestone who will be loving the hype generated by this news. Perhaps, the losers out of a Hamilton-Button driver pairing are the fans in countries like Australia who take the television feed and race commentary of BBC’s F1 coverage. Brundle and Legard are likely to be totally insufferable in describing the efforts of the McLaren duo.

Schumacher to drive for Mercedes GP in 2010?

Michael Schumacher

Hang on to your hats, the F1 rumour mill is about to go into hyperdrive with reports suggesting Michael Schumacher could be tempted out of retirement to re-unite with Ross Brawn at the revamped Mercedes GP team in 2010.

The speculation is being fuelled by two main factors. First, Schumacher has left his role as an advisor to the Ferrari F1 team. Secondly, with Jenson Button seemingly destined for a seat at McLaren the scene is set for an all-German dream team in the new “Silver Arrows” at Mercedes GP.

Okay, sure, Schumacher still holds a key role at Ferrari’s road car department which may scupper any plans of an F1 comeback with the German giants. But, the seven time world champion could almost taste an F1 return earlier in the year when a Maranello red Formula One carrot was dangled in front of him in the form of a part time drive to cover for the injured Felipe Massa.

In the end, that chance was taken away due a neck injury he suffered earlier in the year. Would the promise a full time drive in a new German super-team, headed by his ex-Ferrari master tactician Ross Brawn, be enough to lure Schumacher back to the sport?

Norbert Haug, Mercedes motorsport chief, expects to announce the team’s driver pairing in the next couple of weeks. He’s not revealed any concrete plans to offer Schumacher a seat, but has said, “I think and hope we can announce something in the course of the next couple of weeks. We will do a very good job in that respect as well I can promise you – and maybe we can create some surprises.”

I must admit I am not one of Michael’s greatest fans, but even I can see how spectacularly awesome this would be for F1 were the Schumacher-Mercedes rumour to come true. Please let it be so.

Breaking: Button agrees to McLaren move

Jenson Button

The Guardian currently leads its sport page with a story declaring that reigning F1 world champion Jenson Button has agreed to join the McLaren team on a three year deal.

While nothing has been made official, just yet, it is expected the £6 £18 million deal will be signed off in the coming days.

Button’s reported salary of £2 £6 million per season is well short of Lewis Hamilton’s wage, which is understood to be a very healthy £12 million per year, thanks very much. Assuming this deal goes through, a Hamilton-Button driver pairing is sure to make fascinating viewing in 2010.

McLaren and Mercedes build a bridge

McLaren & Mercedes build a bridge

If we’re to believe the spin McLaren and Mercedes will part ways under mutual agreement. The basics of this agreement were given in Daimler AG’s announcement of the BrawnGP buy-in. Now, McLaren are making happy family noises, as well.

A statement on the McLaren website begins, “McLaren and Mercedes-Benz are delighted to announce a realigned long-term strategic alliance.

“The agreement covers the next six Formula 1 seasons (2010-15) and also provides mechanisms whereby the partnership may continue beyond 2015.”

McLaren will buy back the 40% share owned by Mercedes, with the purchase scheduled to be completed by 2011. Interestingly, for the time being, the Woking-based outfit will continue to race as the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes team in their familiar silver and red livery.

Reading between the lines it seems as though McLaren welcome the independence from Mercedes in the lead up to the launch of their new road car, the MP4-12C. While Mercedes will, theoretically, enjoy greater control over their new F1 team.

Brawn set to go around the Benz

BrawnGP to accept Mercedes-Benz buyout

As the day passes the news gets bigger for BrawnGP. While nothing in F1 is ever certain, the Button to McLaren move looks to be gathering momentum. With Rubens Barichello’s step to Williams already confirmed, BrawnGP will need a new pairing to defend their constructor’s title.

That title defence looks set for a massive boost, too, with reports suggesting Mercedes-Benz are prepared to purchase a massive 75% stake in the team. It is understood that this deal has already been signed off by the two parties. Expect an announcement to confirm the move sometime in the next week, possibly as soon as the next 24 hours (or now!).

Leading the charge behind the wheel for Brawn in 2010 will be Nico Rosberg and Nick Heidfeld according to a report at Planet F1.

Mercedes-Benz owns a 40% share of the McLaren F1 team, so it will be fun to watch how that relationship continues if the German giant buys in to BrawnGP in such a big way.

Then there’s the possibility of two top dogs at McLaren, in Hamilton and Button. Martin Whitmarsh looks set to be a very busy boy in 2010 with egos to massage on all sides of the garage.

UPDATE: Breaking news—BrawnGP have been taken over by Mercedes and will race in 2010 as Mercedes Grand Prix. A full statement, as posted on the BrawnGP website, can be read below.

Dude, where’s my car?

Schumacher's 1994 Benetton-Ford

The eBay auction for Michael Schumacher’s 1994 B194 Benetton-Ford was due to end in a few hours. You may recall the bidding last week was as high as €2.6 million (AU$4.2m), but the listing on eBay.de has been down for over 24 hours now.

Hmm, it seems something is rotten in the state of Denmark. Or Canada (where the car was supposed to be), Germany (where the auction was being hosted), or even England (read on Macduff)!

It appears as though the motoring world has been taken for a ride, with at least one report suggesting the original listing was a hoax. No doubt the old chestnut “the fullness of time” shall reveal all on that one.

However, all is not lost. A new eBay listing, this time from the UK, has popped up offering, yes, you guessed it, a 1994 Benetton-Ford F1 car. Chassis B194-05 comes with a signed certificate of authenticity declaring the car was driven by Schumacher and JJ Lehto. Indeed, the car is said have won 46 of Schumacher’s 92 points in his maiden Championship year. This included wins at San Marino, Canada, Monaco and France.

Mind, that letter of authenticity is signed by Pat Symonds, which is hardly the most credible name going in F1 at the minute. That said, this listing does look legit, with a purpose-built website to advertise the sale: benetton-auction.dinao.com

So, if you really do want to get yourself your very own F1 car, then the current bidding is at £1.8 million (AU$3.2m). The auction is due to end on Sunday evening.

[Source: eBay.co.uk]

UPDATE 19 November: There were two bids at the time of writing this article. These have now been removed and the starting price is at £1,150,000 with a note saying “reserve not met”. Start saving kids there less than four days to go.

UPDATE 22 November: I just checked out the eBay ad to how the sale went and it looks like the car didn’t attract a single bid.

What does this Button do?

Jenson Button

Jenson Button, 2009 Formula One World Champion, is trying to work who he wants to do his Sunday driving with in 2010. Under usual circumstances you’d reckon you might stick with the guys at BrawnGP, who pretty much served a drivers title to you on a silver platter, in part due to a very, very well prepared car.

But, this is F1 and so is anything but normal. Rumours were sent into overdrive on Friday when Button toured McLaren’s factory at Woking in Surrey. McLaren’s F1 boss, Martin Whitmarsh, played tour guide, adding further spice.

Like a lot of other BrawnGP employees Button signed over his services in 2009 for bugger all money (well, bugger all for F1, anyway). Now, as the reigning champ, he reckons he should get a bit more. Trouble is, it seems BrawnGP think he is asking for a lot more.

Unsurprisingly Button’s manager, Richard Goddard, reckons his client’s claims are fair and reasonable, “As I’ve said many times before, Jenson wants to drive a car which is capable of winning the next world championship.

“We’ve been talking about possible terms for 2010 with Brawn for months and we’re not being difficult or unreasonably expensive in our demands for Jenson. In fact we’ve given up quite a lot of negotiating ground in our discussions with them.”

However, more recent news suggests that maybe McLaren weren’t as forthcoming as first thought, as Goddard has since gone into arse covering mode, “Jenson has the utmost respect for boss Ross Brawn and the team.

“Talks have certainly not broken down. He has been incredibly loyal to the team for many years which is why the decision is so hard.”

Hmm, contract negotiations through the media. Don’t you just love it!

BMW – 10 years in Formula One

As we know the BMW half of BMW Sauber is no longer remaining in F1. News of BMW’s departure has been around since late July, and while they didn’t dominate the sport as they might have planned, one does forget some of the things they have achieved since returning to the sport in 2000. Luckily, BMW tv has produced this short clip to remind us of what they’ve been up to these last 10 years.

The highlights from their recent F1 stint, sadly for BMW, are probably away from the circuits with our own Mark Webber crossing the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Nick Heidfeld lapping the Nürburgring Nordschleife.

Stop Damon Hill from crushing this car

Schumacher-Hill crash - 1994 Adelaide GP

Further proof there isn’t anything you can’t buy on eBay is given with the current listing of the Benetton-Ford that Michael Schumacher used at the 1994 Adelaide Grand Prix to “win” his first F1 World Championship.

Here is a sample of the text from the listing:

“For sale is the F1 race car, with which Michael Schumacher won his first Formula One Driver’s Championship at the Adelaide GP of Australia.

Most remembered are the scenes were Michael Schumacher had a collision with Damon hill and his Williams-Renault ending up both had to retire the race and Michael Schumacher could use his one point advantage to be the 1994 F1-Driver’s Champion.”

People keep telling me that Schumacher is the greatest living human being of all time. Well, out of all the racing driver humans, that is. I guess. So, historic racing cars, with real significance, like Schumi’s first F1 title winning machine should be protected.

The current bid is at an astonishing AU$4.2 million. Looks like Damon is dead set on getting this car and sending it to the crushers. Stop him at once!

To encourage further discussion on this topic, make sure you watch the YouTube clip below so you can relive the glorious moments of Schumacher’s triumph!

F1 2009 – Season in review

Jenson Button - 2009 F1 World Champion

The BBC website has an excellent review of the 2009 Formula One season. Included is commentary on all the teams and drivers from the 2009 season. Although, notably, Nelson Piquet Jr is absent from the drivers’ list.

Former team owner Eddie Jordan reviews the team performances, while former F1 driver and BBC expert comments man Martin Brundle covers the drivers.

The drivers have also been asked a series of simple questions and you actually do get a bit of an insight into their personalities by the way they answer the same questions.

Ferrari angry over Toyota withdrawal

Scuderia Ferrari logo

Ferrari has slammed the management of F1 over the loss of Toyota, and other manufacturers, to the sport. Describing the departure of major players as “a war waged against the major car manufacturers” the Scuderia are clearly not happy.

Even the arrival of new teams to fill the void left by the likes of Toyota and BMW is not enough to placate the passionate Italians who question the longevity of the new arrivals such as Manor, Lotus, USF1 and Campos Meta by asking “how many of them will really be there on the grid for the first race of next season in Bahrain and how many will still be there at the end of 2010.”

The fiery statement from Ferrari (available in full after the jump), which is not attributed to any staff member, compares Formula One’s management to Agatha Christie’s novel Ten Little Indians, declaring “the guilty party was only uncovered when all the other characters died, one after the other. Do we want to wait for this to happen or do we want to pen a different ending to the book on Formula 1?”

Let’s hope Renault doesn’t pull of F1 too, looks like Ferrari will be apoplectic if that happens!
