Chris Harris on the McLaren MP4-12C

McLaren MP4-12C

Chris Harris is fast forging himself a solid niche with his extended video reviews for Drive. At 10–15 minutes in length they are long enough to allow the reviewer to provide in-depth feedback, without being so long as to bore the audience.

In his latest edition Harris takes up the cause for McLaren and its much hyped, but often maligned, MP4-12C. Via his Pistonheads blog Harris introduces his thoughts by asking:

Has the media treated the MP4-12C too harshly? Maybe. The odd technical gremlin isn’t such a problem. Even the biggest names have bad days, but perhaps what has undone the McLaren more than even the punchy rhetoric is the sheer expectation of a new supercar made by McLaren. Did the prospect of the values that built the Technology Centre being transposed onto a street car propagate unrealistic expectations?

I think they did. Flip those group test results on their head and you’re left with a brand new car, from a company with zero experience in this sector, that ran the best car Ferrari has ever made very close. That is a mighty impressive result.

McLaren MP4-12C now on display in Sydney

McLaren MP4-12C at Trivett Sydney

Thanks to AUSmotive reader Jono for sending in these pics of the McLaren MP4-12C from the Trivett dealership in Alexandria. Apparently the finishing touches for the McLaren showroom were taking place with signage being installed yesterday when these pics were taken.

If you dig the 12C and would like to get your hands on one we understand there’s going to be a bit of a wait. For now, make do with these pics of what is probably the first 12C to be seen in Australia.

Jerez pre-season test in pictures

F1 Jerez pre-season testing, February 2012

Following the F1 pre-season test at Jerez we’ve compiled a gallery of images showing the new 2012 cars on track for the first time. It’s good to see the cars away from press launches and studio lighting so we can get a better feel for how things will look this season.

Because we’ve focused on the latest cars there’s no images from Mercedes GP or HRT, who both ran 2011 spec machines, and Marussia didn’t attend the test at all. For some reason McLaren has not made any photos available from Jerez, so we’ll have to go without for now.

McLaren MP4-27 v Ferrari F2012

When you compare the McLaren MP4-27 side by side with the Ferrari F2012 you notice something quite interesting. Notice how much lower the nose is on the McLaren? There’s a few more comparison pics for you after the break too.

Please note, of course, these images are intended to be a quick comparison only and the measurements and scale may not be totally accurate.

McLaren unveils 2012 F1 car

McLaren MP4-27

The official launch of the 2012 McLaren MP4-27 Formula One car has just taken place at the team’s headquarters in Woking, Surrey. The car you see here has been described as an evolution on last year’s MP4-26.

Technical Director, Paddy Lowe, says the team had fairly straightforward goals: “Our main objectives for the 2012 season were to optimise downforce despite the changes to the blown floor, and to improve our understanding and utilisation of the Pirelli tyres, which were new to us last year.”

Director of Engineering, Tim Goss, added: “Although you can’t see it, there’s a lot on this car that’s changed. However, this year has seen more of an evolutionary set of rules, so there’s less of the unpredictability that comes from balancing resources between seasons during a time of greater regulatory change.

“I think the most obvious change is the loss of the U-shaped sidepod, which we pioneered on last year’s car. We reverted to a more conventional sidepod shape for this season because the U-shape was less suited to the new exhaust geometry restrictions. For 2012, the exhaust tailpipes now have to exit along the U-channel – so that particular feature was no longer really viable due to the new geometry restrictions.”

Speaking earlier today Martin Whitmarsh claimed the car on display at the launch will more than likely be quite different to the car that lines up at Albert Park next month, as data from pre-season testing helps continue to develop the car.

“We have no room to be complacent – what you see today only scratches the surface of what we’re planning to deliver to the track both from an engineering and operational point of view throughout 2012,” added Whitmarsh.

“I’m pleased and confident that we’ve left no stone unturned in our quest for performance. Now, our focus invariably turns to the track as we evaluate MP4-27 ahead of the start of the 2012 season in Melbourne on March 18. These will be a fascinating three weeks.”

After the break you can see more images and comprehensive written coverage with quotes from Jenson Button, Lewis Hamilton and Martin Whitmarsh. Rudimentary technical specs are also available as is a full Q&A interview with Paddy Lowe and Tim Goss.

McLaren MP4-12C Spider rendered

McLaren MP4-12C roadster rendering

TeamSpeed brings us some nice renderings of the McLaren MP4-12C Spider. It’s believed the model will be badged as the MP4-12S. Supposedly the car will feature a retractable carbon fibre roof that folds back into the space between the seats and the engine bay.

A flatter rear deck complemented by two roadster-style tunnels will house a clear engine panel, leaving the bespoke 3.8 litre V8 twin turbo engine on constant display.

Based on these renderings the 12S looks pretty damn good with its roof up or down. It’s expect McLaren will release official pics and info before the year is out.

McLaren dismisses PURE speculation

2011 Italian Grand Prix

Later today McLaren will take the wraps off its new MP4-27 F1 car. But a recent article in Gazzetta dello Sport has raised questions over McLaren’s future engine partner when F1 swicthes to V6 turbo engines in 2014.

The report claims McLaren has met with new engine maker PURE to discuss a deal that would see them replace Mercedes as the teams’s engine supplier. PURE is headed by former manager to Jacques Villeneuve and BAR Team Principal Craig Pollock.

A McLaren spokesman has quickly dismissed the claims, “McLaren has had absolutely no contact with Pure for many months.

“Moreover, the contact we did have with Pure, many months ago, was of an entirely informal nature, and was merely a courtesy gesture.”

Pollock, too, has said there’s no backroom deal taking place, “The contact between PURE and McLaren was towards the end of last year when we visited all F1 teams to present the PURE powertrain programme.

“This meeting took place with Gilles Simon and myself along with the pertinent McLaren representatives. There has been no follow up meeting or discussions to date.”

For now, this seems like a nothing story. Although, iIt does appear that PURE will be quite aggressive in trying to enter F1 so we’ll keep watching with interest.

2013 McLaren MP4 ‘P12’ rendered

McLaren MP4-P12 rendering

Car magazine brings word of the 2013 McLaren MP4-P12, including this rendering showing how they reckon it will look. The MP4-12C was just a warm up; it’s the P12 that is the true sequel to the awesome F1.

Featuring a strictly two seat layout, an even greater use of carbon fibre in its body and a KERS-equipped 3.8 litre twin turbo V8 from the 12C with the wick turned up to around 800hp, you’re going to need a lot of money to get this car to flutter its eyelids for you. Something around the €750K mark is the tip. That’s a lazy AU$930K if you don’t mind.

VIDEO: Fancy a ride in a McLaren F1 GTR?

Chris Harris gets a passenger ride in a McLaren F1 GTR

In Chris Harris’ latest video he is reporting from the passenger seat of a very desirable and very rare McLaren F1 GTR. We’re not entirely sure why he didn’t mention the owner’s name, especially as we get a clear look at the owner’s face and is easy enough to track down online.

Anyway, that matters not, we do think a ride in a 600hp/1100kg machine would be a lot of fun, even if we might need to reach for the chunder bag along the way. Yeah, you’re probably right, driving it would be much better!

2011 Brazilian Grand Prix in pictures

2011 Brazilian GP

In our final F1 in pictures post for the year it’s great that we can reflect on another grand prix victory for Mark Webber. It’s scant reward in the wake of a dominant season from the other side of the Red Bull garage, but a win is a win and for most drivers they don’t come too easily.

As usual there’s some great pics for you after the break; a job touring the globe shooting F1 cars is one we’d rather like if we had the skills.

We trust you’ve enjoyed this series again in 2011 and we’ll be back with our F1 picture galleries in 2012. If there’s anything you’d like to see added future collections please let us know in the comments section below.

2011 Brazilian GP: Post-race press conference

2011 Brazilian GP

Following news of Mark Webber’s win at the 2011 Brazilian Grand Prix early this morning we can now bring you the final post-race press conference for 2011.

Some minor housekeeping before we start. The one-two placing for Red Bull sees them finish the constructors’ championship on an even 650 points. They enjoy a massive margin back to McLaren (497), with Ferrari (375) and Mercedes (165) the only other teams to make triple figures.

For the drivers, Vettel ended his stellar 2011 with 390 points. Jenson Button (270) was the best of the rest, followed by Mark Webber (258), Frenando Alonso (257) and Lewis Hamilton (227).

Back to Brazil, Australia finished first and last, with young Daniel Ricciardo finishing in twentieth position. The only minor highlight, if at all, was that he did finish ahead of his HRT teammate following Liuzzi’s retirement on lap 62. You couldn’t say the West Australian has set the world alight in his six months in F1. Of course, he is trying to make do with the worst car on the grid and there have been some bright moments.

Let’s hope he’s done enough to secure a drive in 2012. Toro Rosso looms as his best bet, but who knows what the merry circus of Formula One will deliver between now and next March when racing resumes in Melbourne.
