AIMS 2011: The stars

AIMS 2011 teaser

Updates from our visit to AIMS last Friday haven’t progressed as well as we had hoped, so to give you a taste of what’s to come here’s a quick teaser of the five cars that stood out the most for us.

1. BMW Vision EfficientDynamics
We’ve covered this car before, when it was first revealed way back in 2009. But seeing it first hand has given us an altogether new appreciation for it. The EffeicientDynamics concept is a genuinely stunning design that we now know previews the forthcoming i8 model. Forget the mechanical aspects of the car for a moment, though, and just appreciate every crease, curve and detail. It’s an astonishingly well made concept and almost makes up for BMW not displaying any other cars. That’s right, no 1M!

Lamborghini Aventador arrives in Melbourne

Lamborghini Aventador

The Lamborghini Aventador will be on show at the motor show in Melbourne later this week. But, if you’re quick you might be able to get a sneak peek at the 515kW 6.5 litre V12 beast while on display at the Lamborghini Melbourne dealership. Press your nose up against the dealership window, or even walk in and see if your kid can reach the pedals. Either way, it’s sure to be an impressive sight. We can’t wait to see it for ourselves on Friday.

Meanwhile, back at Gotham City word on the street says that Bruce Wayne will be taking delivery of a new Aventador. Expect to see him prowling the roads in it when Batman: The Dark Knight Rises hits the silver screen.

Lamborghini Aventador

Good news for Lambo fans with word coming through form the Australian International Motor Show confirming the Aventador LP700-4 will be on display in Melbourne later this year.

Andrew Smith, managing director of Lamborghini Melbourne, has recently driven the car and is naturally singing its praises, “The Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 is two generations ahead in terms of design and technology.

“Its performance is simply astonishing and is unrivalled in the super sports car arena.

“The Aventador looks amazing in photographs, but this is nothing to seeing it in person. I’m sure the visitors to the Australian International Motor Show are going to love it.”

So there you have it. The motor show opens in Melbourne at 6pm on Friday 1 July and runs until Sunday 10 July.

How many people does it take to fit a Lamborghini Aventador through a doorway?

Lamborghini recently held an exhibition in Rome as part of its celebrations to honour the 150th anniversary of Italy’s unification. One of the items on display was a new Aventador LP 700-4. It’s a big car, right, so how on earth did they get the Aventador into the display area which had relatively poor access? Watch the video to find out.

Lamborghini Sesto Elemento on sale in October

Lamborghini Sesto Elemento

The news from Lamborghini keeps on coming today with word this carbon fibre origami creation, otherwise known as the Sesto Elemento, will be available for sale on 1 October this year. At least that’s what is being reported by German media outlet Auto Motor und Sport.

Revealed at last year’s Paris Motor Show, the Sesto Elemento uses a 5.2 litre V10 with 570hp to good effect, reaching 100km/h in a claimed time of just 2.5 seconds. You can thank a low 999kg kerb weight for that. Fantastic to see a company like Lamborghini embracing a lighter future for its cars.

Of course, something else embraced by Lamborghini is stratospheric pricing and the Sesto Elemento will be no exception, with predictions of a €1.9 million price tag. Mind, with a production run likely to be in the range of 10–20 cars it promises to be one of the most hyper exclusive hyper cars.

Lamborghini Aventador reviews start rolling in

Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4

Steve Sutcliffe from Autocar has made us insanely jealous once again by being one of the first to get behind the wheel of the new Lambo Aventador. You can see his video review in full after the break. Meanwhile, Car has also published its thoughts on the Murcielago replacement.

The Aventador promises so much. A new carbon monocoque chassis, F1-inspired suspension and, of course, a new 6.5 litre V12. The old Murci had a pretty good reputation as well, so has Lamborghini got it right with the Aventador?

Certainly the new car looks the part. It’s pure Lamborghini with its aggressive and provocative angles. We think it looks great. What’s it like to drive, then?

Sutcliffe reckons the Aventador is a real hit on the road, where its dynamics and relatively light weight offer pinpoint handling. On the track, he says the transmission is no match for the Ferrari 458 or McLaren MP4-12C.

Chris Chilton from Car, sums up the Aventador like this, “The Aventador doesn’t just move the game on from the Murcielago, it transports it to a new time zone. The new car is faster, handles better, is easier to drive and much better built.” Sounds like a pretty big tick. However, there is a but; “The Aventador is so competent that some of that thrill has gone.”

Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4

You’ve seen pics of of the Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4, and even a few videos as well, but here’s one filmed inside the cabin while the car was at work during a media track day in Spain Italy. Pretty neat dash display, don’t you think.

We expect there will be more material from this day hitting the web soon, so treat this as a teaser for what may follow.

Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4: Australian pricing

Lamborghini Aventador

We received a nice tip off yesterday, and we want to share it with you, but just make sure you are prepared. So, are you sitting down?

$789,000!

That’s a very big number. Thankfully, the Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 is a very big car; in all senses of the word. In size, in power, in performance and, of course, in stature. There’s no denying the big Lambo has presence.

Mind, that big number is only the bare bones manufacturer’s list price. If you want metallic paint you’ll need an extra $4300; make it another $8000 if you want to pick a colour from the “special” range, like the Arancio Atlas pictured above. Of course, no self-respecting Aventador buyer would sign on the dotted line before having a long hard think about choosing a matt paint scheme, before deciding that $27,000 is probably just a bit too excessive, even for a Lambo.

Lamborghini Aventador hits YouTube – Part 2

Lamborghini Aventador

The Lamborghini Aventador will soon be doing the press rounds and reviews should be coming our way shortly. In the meantime, Lamborghini here’s another collection of YouTube clips, starting with a pair of 700hp beasts driving around Rome and in the countryside.

The Rome video is all romance and drama, the countryside clip, though, is where it’s at. At least it should have been. The driving footage is not that great and the soundtrack is not of V12 roaring, but orchestras dominating. Shame really.

Thankfully, the official Aventador commercial, also shown below, goes part way to showing the car off more appropriately. But, producers take note, we want to here that 6.5 litre V12 at maximum revs; is it that hard to work out?!

Lamborghini Targa Tasmania

Targa Tasmania 2011: George Town

Targa Tasmania 2011

Jason White signalled his intent for the 2011 Targa Tasmania event by setting the quickest time at today’s Prologue in George Town.

The Jason and John White team are the defending champions and also won the rally back in 2005. Their Lamborghini Gallardo was literally and figuratively on fire as the Whites were almost five seconds faster than their nearest competitors, 2009 Targa Tasmania winners Tony Quinn and Naomi Tillett (Nissan GT-R).

A selection of images from “Day 0” at George Town can be seen after the break. The town stages at Targa are often about entertainment and the fire-breathing antics of the Lamborghinis always please the crowd. Also gaining plenty of cheers are the, but many classic Australian V8s as they powerslide around corners.
