Lamborghini Gallardo LP 550-2 Spyder

Lamborghini Gallardo LP 550-2 Spyder

We thought the Super Trofeo Stradale was going to be the last iteration in the successful Gallardo model range for Lamborghini. But they have managed to squeeze out another one with the LP 550-2 Spyder.

The key is in the 550-2 model designation, that’s 550hp from the well loved 5.2 litre V10 and a 2 for rear-wheel drive. Surely this is the last new Gallardo? If so, it’s a great note to go out on.

Imagine yourself with the top down, an empty stretch of winding blacktop ahead and a glorious Lambo V10 wailing behind your ears, the love of your life beside you; could life be any better?

Flaming Lamborghini wins Targa High Country

Jason White, Lamborghini Gallardo

Jason White’s Lamborghini Gallardo is a crowd favourite on the Australian tarmac rally scene. Always competitive and always spitting a few flames out the back. But it’s not very often that he wins a rally while his car is genuinely on fire. That’s exactly what happened on the weekend when he took out the 2011 Targa High Country event held in the Victorian snowfields.

Video of the White Hot flaming Lamborghini can be seen after the break.

evo Car of the Year videos

Evo magazine has assembled 10 of the world’s best performance cars to try and establish which one they think was the best to hit the market in 2011. Following a few phone calls, 10 turned into 11 when they added the just released BMW M5 to the list. As you would. The results of eCOTY 2011 are out there, but we won’t give that away just yet in case you’re waiting for the mag.

In the meantime here’s the list of cars gathered at the mercy of some heavy right feet. Highlight videos from Chris Harris on each can also be seen after the break. He was banned from driving the Ferrari, thanks to his rant against the Prancing Horse earlier this year, but managed to find way to get by.

A barrier becomes a barrier to Lamborghini sale

Lamborghini Gallardo test drive crash

This is the sorry result of a Lamborghini Gallardo test drive in Sydney on the weekend. The incident happened at around 9 o’clock on Saturday morning when the driver was leaving Macquarie Street to join the Cahill Expressway. Unfortunately a barrier got in the way.

We are led to believe it was all totally innocent as well, with Andrew Smith from Lamborghini Sydney saying the driver was not speeding at the time.

“It doesn’t matter as long as no one was doing anything stupid or crazy, and no one was injured,” said Mr Smith.

Apparently, insurance will be picking up the tab and the driver, who is not expected to be forced to pay any damages, will be breathing a massive sigh of relief.

Batman’s daily driver seen in Gotham

Lamborghini Aventador

Thanks to VadGTI from the The Car Lounge we can bring you these pics of Bruce Wayne’s Lamborghini Aventador. The Lambo was spotted on the set of The Dark Knight Rises, the latest Batman movie. Not too much else to add other than Wayne has good taste in cars. Actually, an Aventador would make quite a nice base for a bona fide Batmobile, don’t you think.

Frankfurt 2011: Lamborghini presentation

Couldn’t make it to the Lamborghini presentation at the Frankfurt Motor Show overnight? Neither could we, but here’s the next best thing with video of CEO Stefan Winkelmann telling us all about his new toy: the Gallardo Super Trofeo Stradale. Helps if you can speak German, though.

Frankfurt 2011: Lamborghini Sesto Elemento confirmed for production

Lamborghini Sesto Elemento

Lamborghini CEO Stefan Winkelmann has just confirmed at the Frankfurt Motor Show the company will be building a very limited run of Sesto Elemento models. Only 20 will be made and you’ll need a hefty €1.5 million to get your hands on one.

Speaking at the Lamborghini presentation overnight Winkelmann said, “The Sesto Elemento is a vehicle in the making, yes we will build it.

“Besides a few very small details it will look identical to the concept car. It will be priced at €1.5 milion and be purely for track use, although if a customer wanted to homologate it for the road I don’t see that being a problem.”

We first saw the Sesto Elemento at the 2010 Paris Motor Show and its specs are pure fantasy. It’s expected to weigh 999kg, and will be powered by the same 419kW 5.2 litre V10 found in the Gallardo Super Trofeo Stradale.

Frankfurt 2011: Lamborghini Gallardo LP 570-4 Super Trofeo Stradale

Lamborghini Gallardo Super Trofeo Stradale

The Lamborghini Gallardo LP 570-4 Super Trofeo Stradale; it’s the most extreme Gallardo ever, according to Lamborghini and, with that long name, it’s a sub-editor’s nightmare. It’ll be a boy racer’s dream, of course, and the rear wing lifted straight from the racing version seals the deal.

Really, who can say no to the car’s dashing good looks and 5.2 litre V10 complete with 570hp (419kW) powering all four wheels? Not us. If you want one, you’d better be quick—only 150 Super Trofeo Stradales will be made—it’s the final swansong for the evergreen Gallardo.

The car weighs in at 1340kg, the same as previous Superleggerra models and a bit more than originally reported. It’s still 70kg lighter than a regular Gallardo and has only 2.35kg to shift for every horsepower on offer. A 100km/h dash takes just 3.4 seconds and you’ll need only 10.4 seconds to make it to 200km/h. Keep that foot planted and you’ll soon reach the 320km/h v-max.

In honour of Italy’s racing heritage the Super Trofeo Stradale is available in the special Rosso Mars paint you see in these pictures. Other colour options are Grigio Telesto (dark grey) and Bianco Monocerus (white). If you’re ready to part with even more cash you can keep the shiny black roof.

There’s more pics and more detail from Lamborghini after the break. Start saving!

Last goodbye for Gallardo at Frankfurt?

Lamborghini Gallardo Super Trofeo

Last week Lamborghini told us they will be bringing a new “super sports car” to the Frankfurt Motor Show. They only teased us, of course, and the immediate speculation was the car in question could be a production version of the Sesto Elemento. A sub-1000kg 570hp beast revealed in concept form at last year’s Paris Motor Show.

Now, AutoExpress in the UK are saying they’ve been told the mystery model will be an extreme Gallardo honouring the machines used in the Super Trofeo one-make racing series.

Starting with a Gallardo LP560-4 as a base it’s reckoned Lambo will strip 110kg from the standard car’s weight. At 1300kg the model will be a further 40kg less than the ‘lightweight’ Superleggera.

Also expected to feature are a radically styled front splitter and rear wing. The final Gallardo will still source its power from the familiar 5.2 litre V10. Whether Lambo can find more than 570hp from the engine is unknown.

Lamborghini: Racing towards Frankfurt

Lamborghini Sesto Elemento

At last year’s Paris Motor Show the spectacular looking Lamborghini Sesto Elemento was revealed. Now a new teaser released by Lambo gives hope that we’ll be seeing the Sesto Elemento in some form again at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

We’ve previously reported the carbon origami creation would be on sale in October, so it stands to reason we’ll see it again in September.

Lamborghini’s teaser says they are ‘racing towards Frankfurt’ and with the Sesto Elemento expected to be limited to no more than 20 examples it is quite possible the model will be built in race or track-spec only.

Remember, this car is expected to weigh 999kg, is powered by a 5.2 litre V10 knocking out an impressive 570hp. Bellissimo!

Lamborghini says NO to manual transmissions

Lamborghini Diablo

There’s no chance of ever seeing a manual transmission in any future Lamborghini according to US website Motor Trend. The news follows an interview with Maurizio Reggiani, Lamborghini’s R&D director, who revealed no more than 2% of cars they build today are fitted with a manual box.

Of course, the Aventador LP700-4 doesn’t offer a manual box option and that’s now expected to be the same when the eight-year-old Gallardo is replaced.

The new model is rumoured to be called the Cabrera and Reggiani explains a traditional manual breaks the electronic regime of the modern car. Apparently, then, humans can no longer be trusted to change gears at optimum points.

Perhaps this news is no real surprise. The Ferrari 458 Italia also says no to the charming chrome-gated slots that were once so admired by so many. Lower down the food chain, the Audi RS3 is only offered with an ‘auto’ S tronic as well.

It’s easy to see why a car like the BMW 1M, only offered with a 6-speed manual, has been so widely embraced by motoring journalists and enthusiasts alike.

AIMS 2011 gallery: Lamborghini

Lamborghini at AIMS 2011

Like Jaguar, Lamborghini is enjoying a renaissance of some merit. The Murcielago signalled the return to form almost 10 years ago now, leaving the new Aventador LP700-4 with some mighty big boots to fill. There’s no need to fret, the Aventador is very worthy ambassador to uphold the Murci’s legacy.

It makes a visual statement like few other cars can and even in the relatively dull ‘Grigio Estoque’ metallic grey paint the Aventador hits you right between the eyes. With 700hp and a brand new 6.5 litre V12 to power this latest beast, the Aventador will be a global phenomenon.

Okay, with Australian driveaway prices being well on the northern side of $800K you won’t see an Aventador every day. Lamborghini Australia expect to sell 15 Aventadors in the next 12 months, though, and say they signed up two new customers last week alone. Nice of Lamborghini to allow the media pack to get inside and place their grubby mitts on the wheel, too. A few other manufacturers could probably take a leaf out of their book.

A couple of poor man’s Gallardo models completed the stand for Lamborghini making sure this display is a guaranteed hit for show goers.
