Remembering the Lamborghini Aventador J

Lamborghini Aventador J

$2.66 million.

That’s what was required to buy the one-off Lamborghini Aventador J, which starred at the Geneva Motor Show back in March. The identity of the buyer, for now, remains unknown but the sale figure was confirmed by Lamborghini’s CEO, Stephen WInkelmann, as being €2.1m (AU$2.66m).

In return the buyer received one of the coolest cars money can buy packed with a 700hp punch, thanks to a 6.5 litre V12 engine sourced from the comparatively staid Aventador LP700-4.

Speaking about the J, Stephen Winkelmann, Lamborghini CEO, proclaimed: “The new Lamborghini Aventador J is the most radical open supersports car of Lamborghini’s history.”

And with that sale price, we’re guessing it has become the most expensive Lamborghini in history too.

There’s a short video from Lambo after the break to remind you of the Aventador J’s finer qualities.

Lamborghini Urus SUV concept revealed

Lamborghini Urus concept

Lamborghini has sold its soul to the SUV devil and come up with this Urus concept, revealed in Beijing today. Although, for now it’s something of a vision statement for a probable launch in 2015. It’s the Lambo the whole family can enjoy, apparently. But only if your family stops at four.

Lambo has announced the Urus will be powered by a 440kW (600hp) engine, but have given no specs on what type of engine it is. When you consider, “the Lamborghini Urus will beat all comparable competitors when it comes to CO2 emissions,” just chucking in the 7.0 V12 from the Aventador may not be the final answer. A hybrid perhaps?

Well, this wouldn’t be the first time a hybrid SUV has been mentioned in the same sentence as Lamborghini. Indeed, serious talk of an LM002 successor began at least 18 months ago.

We’re not entirely sure what to make of the Urus (as well as being a stupid name, it makes reference to an obscure and extinct breed of cattle, of course). On the one hand the Lambo-fied exterior looks great, on the other it’s a bit daft. At just 1.66m tall we do expect headroom won’t be a strong point.

At least it’s better than that horrible Bentley creation we saw at Geneva.

Although, the inside is, well, bloody awful. Take a look at the pics, skim over the presser and tell us what you make of the Urus.

Audi Lamborghini Targa Tasmania Video

Targa Tasmania 2012: Lamborghini v Audi

With thanks to Tasmania’s Southern Cross TV we can bring you this excellent in-car comparison from Targa Tasmania. On top of screen is Jason White in a Lamborghini Gallardo, below is Matt Close in an Audi TT RS. At the time, White was leading the event in Modern outright and Close was in third place.

The tarmac covered is TS19 Castra from Day 3 (click here to access a map of the stage). The Lambo was five seconds quicker over the 7.73km stage and it’s interesting to see where it was able to build its lead.

Lamborghini Aventador lights my fire

Lamborghini Aventador fire

We update you with the rather upsetting news that a menacing Lamborghini Aventador has apparently self-immolated on a Southern Californian highway. Supposedly this somewhat unperturbed chap is the owner of the sorry looking Aventador behind him.

At this stage it’s not totally clear what happened or what set the fire off, other than an official traffic report stating, “Left rear wheel on fire.”

Well, at least the owner, if that really is him, is okay and in good spirits.

Let’s hope this is the last we see of burning Aventadors. There’s a pic of what it looked like before the fire and the all matt black exterior looked pretty tough.

UPDATE: Amateur video of the fire has been added below.

Geneva 2012: Lamborghini Aventador J

Lamborghini Aventador J

Just when you thought a German hatchback was a bit radical Lamborghini stands up and slaps you in the face with a 700hp dose of reality. This is the Aventador J, “a force of nature on wheels” Lamborghini claim.

Stephan Winkelmann, President and CEO of Lamborghini says, “With the Lamborghini Aventador J, we have molded our brand DNA into its most definitive form to date. This automobile is as extreme and as uncompromising as only a Lamborghini can be.

“The new Lamborghini Aventador J is the most radical open supersports car of Lamborghini’s history. Its name comes from our tradition and combines an unconventional design with technology innovation.”

Winkelmann is referring to the Miura P400 Jota, a one-off creation made in 1970 to comply with the FIA’s Appendix J regs. Following suit, this Aventador J is also a one-off creation, albeit one that has used its Aventador LP700-4 platform wisely and is ready for road use. As such it will be offered for sale and won’t be consigned to Lamborghini’s museum.

It’s a timely and pleasing reminder from Winkelmann that he knows the legacy Lamborghini holds in the automotive world. “Nowadays we are confronted with several regulations that we face in the spirit of challenge. The Aventador J is the proof that, despite the rules, Lamborghini will always make people dream, even in the future,” he said.

The Aventador J is as wild as it is brilliant! More power to them.

Meet the Aventador J Speedster

Lamborghini Aventador J Speedster

It’s expected Lamborghini will be bringing an Aventador Roadster to the Geneva Motor Show. But this Aventador-based creation seems to have caught most people off guard.

With a slightly oddball title of Aventador J Speedster, we’re led to believe, it sounds a bit like a lead actor from a Hollywood B movie. Note the lack of a front windscreen and overt rear spolier. That’s if you can take your eyes of those massive side scoops.

Who knows what this beast will be powered by, we’ll assume it’s based on the 6.5 litre V12 from the now apparently mundane Aventador. We should have the answers for you in the next day or two.

In the meantime Lamborghini has dropped a teaser which we think links to this car. Note the J at the end of the clip.

Two new Lambo models coming to Geneva?

Lamborghini SUV rendering

There’s a bit of speculation around suggesting Lamborghini will reveal two new models at the Geneva Motor Show in March. One is expected to be a Roadster version of the Aventador. It’s said the Roadster will feature a retractable carbon fibre roof.

Also in the mix is the chance Lamborghini could reveal an SUV, complete with a hybrid drivetrain. It’s a story that’s been around for a while, and has even reported to be shelved in favour of the four-door Estoque. But Italian mag Quattroruote seems to think there’s life in the Lambo SUV yet.

Or it could be the Sesto Elemento, perhaps. Or even, yet another, Gallardo special edition. Let’s wait and see.

Easy come, easy go

David Dopp, a 34-year-old truckie from Utah in the United States, went from zero to hero when he won a Lamborghini Murcielago in a convenience store promotion. Bravo him.

Only trouble is he crashed it within six hours of taking delivery. Boo him!

Apparently, while taking a mate for a joyride, he struck some black ice and the rest is history. Fortunately the damage was not too bad and nobody was hurt. And, promises Dopp, he wasn’t speeding officer.

In his own words the Murci is worth more than his own house and the financial burden of simply running the car is too much. Speaking after his accident he said, “I already had offers on it. I’m going to sell it I have bills more important than a Lamborghini. I’ve got a family to support.”

The Murcielago in question is a 2008 model and was valued at US$358,000 prior to the accident, but Dopp has said he will accept offers below $300,000 once it has been repaired.

Lamborghini Aventador tops out at 370km/h

Lamborghini Aventador

As well as playing with cars around the Nürburgring, German mag Sport Auto spends a lot of time at the Hockenheim track. In this video you can see a full lap of the circuit filmed from the side of a Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4. Then, for giggles we see a camera pointed at the dash as the Aventador reaches an indicated 370km/h. A GPS device apparently indicated the speed was more like 354km/h, but when you’re going that fast let’s not quibble over 16km/h.

VIDEO: Aventador’s launch control in action

Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4

If you had a 700hp supercar, with all-wheel drive and launch control, and an empty road ahead of you, do you reckon you’d give it a crack? Yeah, thought so.

Well, given it’s unlikely that you, or I, are going to have access to such equipment any time soon here’s a video filmed from the seat of a Lamborghini Aventador showing just what that would look like.
