Lamborghini Gallardo production ends

Lamborghini Gallardo

Lamborghini has built a total of 14,022 Gallardos and this LP 570-4 Spyder Performante is the last one to roll off the production line.

The Gallardo was first launched 10 years ago, during the company’s 40th anniversary year. Now celebrating its 50th birthday, almost half of all Lamborghinis ever made is a Gallardo model of some kind. And if you’re struggling to keep up with all the different variations of Gallardo we don’t blame you; there are 32 in all.

The last “new” Gallardo was the LP 570-4 Squadra Corse which debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. All have been powered by a 5.2 litre V10 singing its glorious tune in various states of performance.

We’ve loved the Gallardo, it still looks as good today as it did 10 years ago. Thanks Lamborghini for the Gallardo, but we’re also really keen to see what happens next, when the Cabrera becomes a reality!

Lamborghini Veneno Roadster revealed

Lamborghini Veneno Roadster

Back in March Lamborghini gave the world the Veneno. Well, actually they only gave it to three buyers in exchange for €3 million.

We didn’t like it much then and we don’t care for this Veneno Roadster either. Sorry, Lamborghini, but let’s cut to the chase, it’s just plain ugly.

Your Miura is beautiful. Even the evergreen Gallardo still cuts an impressive shape. And with the Sesto Elemento you were at the top of your game. That was crazy and sexy all at the same time.

So what on earth has gone wrong with this Veneno? In hardtop or roadster, it doesn’t matter, it’s just a mish-mash of ill-fitting proportions and from every angle it just looks wrong. We understand the 552kW 6.5 litre V12 has a lot of appeal, but couldn’t you dress it in something nicer than this?

Having said that, we know you won’t find any trouble finding up to nine people to part with a hefty €3.3 million to buy one. Good luck to you. But, please, don’t do this to our eyes ever again.

Put your hand up if you’d like to be Giorgio Sanna!

Giorgio Sanna, Lamborghini test driver

Giorgio Sanna. Ever heard of him? He’s the bloke who replaced Valentino Balboni. If you haven’t caught on yet, that means Giorgio gets to test drive Lamborghinis for a living. He gets to do that on the racetrack, in competition, or with new prototypes on the road.

We can only think a bad day for Sanna would be turning to a new planning meeting where he has to utter to himself, “Not another bloody Gallardo!”

In the video oil commercial after the break Giorgio tells us all about the fun times he has playing with Italian supercars day after day.

VIDEO: Lamborghini Gallardo LP 570-4 Squadra Corse

Lamborghini Gallardo Squadra Corse

Lamborghini has released a short teaser video for its Gallardo LP 570-4 Squadra Corse. It’s probably not the best clip of a Lambo you’ll see. They’ve not been terribly sublte by mixing crowd shots from Spa while the car drives around an empty racetrack that’s not Spa. And we also like the Mercedes logo which can be seen in the frame above.

That said, we’d certainly say yes to an opportunity to drive the Squadra Corse around a racetrack, with or without fans in the stand!

Lamborghini Cabrera rendered

Lamborghini Cabrera Spyder

Amidst all the excitement of the Lamborghini Cabrera spottings last week Automedia has seen fit to come good with a couple of renderings to show how sensational the production model could look.

Shown here in Spyder and hardtop (below) versions it ain’t half hot mum! And we’re very pleased to see there’s a fair bit of Sesto Elemento in this look. Let’s hope it’s half way accurate.

It’s another new Gallardo, but this time it’s real

Lamborghini Cabrera prototype

Lamborghini is well known for releasing new iterations of its very fine Gallardo supercar and now we’re facing the prospect of another one. But the good news here is that this is an all-new model and not another “one-off” limited edition finale.

A new Lambo prototype, codenamed LP724, has been snapped at the Nürburgring in recent days. It’s expected the Gallardo-replacement will be ready for sale around the middle of 2014, after making its show debut in Geneva next March.

Believed to be called the Cabrera the new name follows tradition by referencing a family of Spanish bulls and not likeable golfers from Argentina.

Parent company Audi won’t be missing the boat here either and the Cabrera and the next-gen R8 will be built around a common modular spacefame. There will still be major differences between the two cars with the R8 to have its wheelbase extended by 30mm to allow for greater interior comfort.

Meanwhile, the new entry-level Lambo supercar will look to the ball-tearing Sesto Elemento for its exterior inspiration. Lamborghini will stick with a 5.2 litre V10 for the Cabrera with revisions expected to deliver as much as 600hp (450kW).

Interestingly Autocar reports the car will come standard with a 6-speed manual transmission, leaving a 7-speed DSG from the R8 to be an option only. This would contradict a two-year-old rumour suggesting Lamborghini would not be using manual boxes for any future models.

Lamborghini Urus moves closer to green light

Lamborghini Urus concept

Lamborghini boss Stephan Winkelmann says he now expects the Urus SUV to be signed off for production.

Speaking at the opening of a new showroom in Tokyo, Winkelmann said: “We’re working on it and it will come, which will be good for the brand.

“We’re going low profile now. I can’t tell you much on details now, but when we get close to the launch, we will have more.”

Those keen on getting dirty in the Urus have time on their hand with the model not expected to be launched until 2016 or 2017. When they do have an SUV ready for sale Lambo reckons they can shift up to 3000 units annually.

If you want more bling, just buy it!

Ridiculous Lamborghini Aventador 1:8 model carved from solid gold

If you want more bling, just buy it
When you need more bling, you buy it
You won’t hide it
You won’t throw your gold away, ooh

Apologies for the cheap trick there (geddit). Anyway, yes, if you’re looking for a fantastic way to blow a heap of cash you didn’t even know you had here it is! A Lamborghini Aventador carved from a 500kg block of solid gold. Yeah, we know, we’ve been hanging out for one of these for ages.

The model itself hasn’t actually been made yet. Oh no, the manufacturer, RGE Robert Gulpen Engineering, is cooling its heels until the right to have the model made as been sold to the highest bidder. That way you can tackify it even more with your newly (re)confirmed status as a tasteless moron.

It’s planned to go up for auction soon and you’d need not open your mouth unless your first words are, “I’ll start the bidding at $US7.5 million thanks!”

Great, it’s predicted to cost around ten times more than the cost of the real car and it’s only 1:8 scale. Seriously, here’s a great example of just how stuffed this planet is sometimes!

Frankfurt 2013: Gallardo LP 570-4 Squadra Corse

Lamborghini Gallardo LP 570-4 Squadra Corse

There’s a major motor show on right now, so that means it’s the launch of yet another Lamborghini Gallardo. This one is called the LP 570-4 Squadra Corse.

It’s based on the Super Trofeo Stradale which was the last Gallardo ever. That was released two years ago and we’ve had not one, but two new Gallardos since then. And now we have three.

The Squadra Corse has been named after the recently created department of Lamborghini which handles the company’s motorsport activities. The newest Gallardo is powered by a 570hp V10 taken straight from the Super Trofeo racecar. Even the massive rear wing comes straight from the track.

The use of aluminium and carbon fibre construction helps keep the dry weight down to 1340kg, giving the car a power to weight ratio of 2.35hp/kg. The Squadra Corse does the 100km/h dash in 3.4 seconds and the 200km/h sprint in 10.4 seconds, before topping out at 320km/h.

Only a limited number will be built and if you’ve got a spare €191,000 plus some change for taxes you can have one all to yourself.

VIDEO: Evo’s highway to heaven

Evo's highway to heaven

Henry Catchpole from Evo takes us into a motoring fantasy land with this video:

This test brings together some of the greatest analogue super cars—the ones that make you work hard as a driver, but are hugely rewarding – where we discover what they are all about, and why we love them. The McLaren F1 goes up against the Ferrari F40 and F50, Porsche Carrera GT, Noble M600, Pagani Zonda F and Lamborghini Murcielago LP670-4 SV.

There’s nothing further we can add, except to ask. Can you imagine how special, how wonderful and how life changing it would have been to experience those seven cars back to back.
