Jaguar reveals C-X16 hybrid concept

Jaguar C-X16 concept

Jaguar has given us an official preview of its C-X16 hybrid sportscar ahead of next week’s Frankfurt Motor Show. Looks pretty flash, don’t you reckon.

Mainstream power peaks at a healthy 280kW (380PS) courtesy of a supercharged 3.0 litre V6. Thanks to that blower torque tops out at 450Nm. Green power can be accessed with a F1-style push to pass button on the steering wheel. Allowing sir to tap into a further 70kW/235Nm of electric power.

The C-X16 reaches 100km/h in 4.4 seconds. The combination of hybrid power and an 8-speed auto offers good in-gear acceleration and CO2 emissions are a reasonably green 165g/km; green for a sportscar that is.

Ian Callum, Director of Design, Jaguar Cars like his latest creation. “Jaguars have always been dramatically different. With the C-X16 we have moved the current award-winning design language on to the next generation, creating a car that is the very essence of future Jaguar performance,” he said.

Jaguar XF Estate bringing cool to 2012

Jaguar XF estate rendering

After driving the Jaguar XF last year we learnt the prestige buyer need not head straight for the established German marques. The XF has sent Jaguar on a new journey, managing to throw away its sometimes staid past in favour of a style and sophistication found only in Modern Britainâ„¢. News that an Estate version is on the way only heightens our appreciation for the car. As the astute reader knows station wagons set the intellectual apart from the hordes of SUV lemmings.

The only sad news is that we only have this rendered image to go on for now. While the XF Estate is due for launch next year, it’s not expected we’ll see an official concept or pre-production version anytime soon.

Jaguar XE heading to Frankfurt

Jaguar XE rendering

The all-new Jaguar XE will be on display at the Frankfurt Motor Show Autocar reports. Not only that, insiders are promising the E-type inspired roadster “will blow the rest of the industry away.”

It’s understood Jag wants to make some noise ahead of the car’s 2012 release. A major auto show in Germany where the new Porsche 911 will be the star attraction seems like the perfect opportunity for the British icon to ruffle feathers.

In truth the XE is likely to be priced at around £40K and be more of a Boxster rival.

Jaguar considering LMP1 Le Mans entry

Jaguar XJR 12

The chase for outright success in the LMP1 category at Le Mans has been a strictly Audi or Peugeot affair in recent years. But recent word from Porsche tells us that will change in 2014. Now, it seems Jaguar’s Indian owners Ratan Tata want in as well.

It’s understood Jaguar is keeping a watching brief on the motorsport world with a view to creating an all-new LMP1 car to fight for outright success.

Jaguar has seven wins at the Circuit de la Sarthe, the most recent came in 1990 with the XJR-12 (shown above). The British icon hasn’t competed in the top category at Le Mans since 1991.

Motorclassica at AIMS 2011

In the back corner of the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre this week you’ll find the Motorclassica display. It has some of the motoring world’s most iconic designs on show. Almost all would have been stars on the international motor show circuit of their era.

A 1956 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL ‘Gullwing’ grabbed our attention. It’s one of the world’s most recognisable cars and we can’t help but be transfixed whenever we see one.

A couple of classic Jaguars featuring beautiful period styling in the form of the XK120 and XK140 are to be admired. And you certainly won’t see a Tucker Torpedo every day. The DNA of virtually every modern Ferrari can be traced back to the Dino. You may not know what a Talbot Lago Type 26C looks like, but we reckon you’ll be transported back in time once you start reading its history.

For more info on Motorclassica and the annual show at the Royal Exhibition Building in Melbourne, be sure to check out the official website.

AIMS 2011 gallery: Jaguar

Jaguar at AIMS 2011

Jaguar has been enjoying something of a resurgence in recent years and the 404kW 5.0 litre V8-powered XKR-S is certainly helping the cause. Even if this classically British car is wearing French Racing Blue paint. It was the clear automotive star on the Jag display.

The curves of the models on the stand were pleasing to the eye and the latest Jaguar design language does a great job of positioning their cars in the prestige market, while providing a unique style.

The blue and black interior of the XKR-S may not be to everyone’s taste and if not we suggest taking a closer look at the new XJ. The digital dash is something we’d be keen to see in action. Purple velvet lined storage cubbies also provide a nice level of difference.

Let’s hope Jaguar rides this new wave of inspiration for some time and continues to provide a worthy and reliable alternative to the German mainstays.

Williams and Jaguar join forces to build C-X75

Jaguar C-X75

Jaguar has announced a partnership with the Williams F1 team that will see the C-X75 concept car from last year’s Paris Motor Show come to life. The hybrid powered concept used a pair of gas turbine engines to recharge the batteries for the electric motors found at each wheel. However, the transformation from concept to reality will see the C-X75 be powered by a more conventional arrangement including two electric motors and an internal combustion engine.

The only specifics given, at this stage, relate to performance targets and pricing. Jaguar say the road version of the C-X75 will be able to crack 100km/h in under three seconds, 160km/h in 12 seconds and have a top speed over 320km/h. In all electric mode it will have a modest 50km range, while overall it should emit 99g/km of CO2 emissions.

Just 250 examples of the all-wheel drive hybrid supercar will be built, with an expected price range of £700,000–900,000 (AU$1.07–1.37 million).

After the break you’ll see more pics, a press release from Jaguar along with a video review of the concept car by Jay Leno. Also included is a download of the press docs from Paris 2010.

Jag-inspired Growler E set for production

Growler-E

News of this funky looking E-Type inspired Growler E broke last week. TopGear now brings word the car will be going into limited production.

To bring you up to speed, the Growler E was created as a tribute to the classic Jaguar E-Type, which was first presented 50 years ago at the 1961 Geneva Motor Show. The 21st century Growler concept has been created by Swedish designer Bo Zolland from Vizualtech, in collaboration with Swiss designer Robert Palm. The pair got creative at the behest of a nameless and apparently wealthy businessman from Sweden.

The Growler E is based on a current model Jag XKR and has had the wick on its 5.0 litre supercharged V8 turned up from 510hp to 600hp. That’s easy enough to do thanks to a bit of ECU tweaking. The clever part comes in shedding 200kg of weight from the XKR and reaching a target weight of 1550kg for the Growler E. The clever clogs from Vizualtech reckon that should be enough to get their creation to 100km/h in under four seconds.

So, back to the production plans for the car. Spokesman Robert Palm reckons they should have their first car ready in a bit over 12 months from now. Each model will be hand built and may take as long as six months to assemble.

As for pricing, well it all depends on the number built. If only a handful are made expect to pay around £850,000. If demand is high enough, though, Vizualtech may consider contracting production to Magna Steyr in Austria (they make the MINI Countryman). That being the case costs could fall by around half.

UPDATE: AUSmotive contacted Robert Palm for more info and he’s replied with some good material. Check it out after the break.

Autocar names top five road tests

Steve Sutcliffe, Autocar

Steve Sutcliffe from Autocar presents the top five cars from a database of 5000 road tests (video available after the break). On the list they have included an original 1959 Mini, a 1961 Jaguar E Type, a 1981 Golf GTI, a 1994 McLaren F1 and a 2010 Porsche 911 GT3 RS.

In the first recap, featuring the Mini, it’s interesting when Sutcliffe includes a couple of lines from the 1959 test; a shame, really, he didn’t do that for the other four cars.

Overall, it seems like a reasonable enough list, if a bit skewed towards British engineering. But, Autocar is a British mag after all. So, what would cars would you put in your top five?

All new Jaguar XJ – Australian pricing

Jaguar XJ

Jaguar’s new flagship XJ model goes on sale in Australia this month. Entry level list pricing begins at $198,800 for the short-wheelbase 3.0 Diesel and goes up to a hefty $367,800 for the long-wheelbase supercharged 5.0 litre V8. (Full pricing details are listed after the break.)

Overall the XJ is a nice looking car. In photos, at least, it has a commanding presence that is only let down by the continuation of the rear window graphic on to the car’s C-pillar.

Naturally, Ian Callum, Design Director at Jaguar Cars, reckons they’re on a winner with their 21st century take on Jaguar visual language, “The new XJ is a thoroughly modern interpretation of the quintessential Jaguar. Its visual impact stems from the elongated teardrop shape of the car’s side windows, that powerful stance and its wide track. It is the most emphatic statement yet of Jaguar’s new design direction.”

For a car that carries such weight at the top of the Jaguar model line up its surprising that just four images accompanied the Australian press release. Similarly, the UK press archive wasn’t wasting any resources, either. However, there’s enough pics to show the car at is best, even if the interior shots had to be nicked from the Jaguar website.

After AUSmotive tested the Jaguar XF recently it became clear that New Jaguar is both shedding its cardigan image of yore and giving the established German competition something to think about. But, 367-large for a new Jag – would you do it?

Jaguar XKR GT2 prepared for Le Mans

Jaguar XKR GT2

There’s a bit over one week to go until the 2010 Le Mans 24 hour race and the chaps at Jaguar are celebrating their 75th anniversary by entering an XKR GT2.

It is the company’s first appearance at Le Mans for around 20 years and Managing Director, Mike O’Driscoll says, “Motorsport has always been important to Jaguar. Our domination of Le Mans in the 1950s was a foundation stone in our history and our success in the late 80s and early 90s reinforced our reputation as one of the great sports car manufacturers.

“As we look to the future with our new range of high performance ‘R’-branded cars – the XKR and XFR – we aim to make the Jaguar brand synonymous with motorsports once again. It’s good to be back.”

The XKR GT2 has been prepared by the JaguarRSR team and will be driven by Marc Goossens, Ryan Dalziel and Paul Gentilozzi. Featuring a supercharged 5.0 litre V8 with over 500 horsepower the Jag will be doing its best mixing it with the likes of the BMW M3 GT2 fresh off its Nürburgring 24 hour success.

More after the break.

Drive Thru: Jaguar XF V6 Diesel S

Jaguar XF

The Jaguar XF is a beautiful car. From any angle, it doesn’t matter. It’s a good thing, too. Until the XF came along Jags had become a 1960s time capsule, while the rest of the world had moved at broadband speed into the noughties.

Styling cues such as the chrome grille and rounded headlights remind us of Jaguar’s great legacy. Importantly, though, Jaguar has shed tired clichés in favour of a new direction that enables it to compete alongside the established German players.

This would all count for nothing if its beauty was only skin deep. But it’s not. Step inside and, again, the interior is clearly defined by the century in which it was created. A pleasing mix of materials give the XF a New England feel.
