Rage against the machine

2010 Ferrari 458 Italia

Chris Harris, Evo motoring scribe, has unleashed a quality rant on the Ferrari PR machine over at Jalopnik that basically says “F@#k you, I won’t do what you tell me!” It’s a must read. Here’s a taste of why he’s fed up dealing with Maranello’s PR department:

“Like anyone with half a brain, I’ve been willing to cut Ferrari some slack because it is, well, Ferrari—the most famous fast car brand of all and the maker of cars that everyone wants to know about. Bang out a video of yourself drifting a new Jag XKR on YouTube and 17 people watch it; do the same in a 430 Scuderia and the audience is 500,000 strong. As a journalist, those numbers make you willing to accommodate truck-loads of bullshit, but I’ve had enough now.

“What does it say about a 458 if the only way its maker is willing to loan it to a magazine is if a laptop can be plugged in after every journey and a dedicated team needs to spend several days at the chosen test track to set-up the car? It says they’re completely nuts—behavior that looks even worse when rival brands just hand over their car with nothing more than a polite suggestion that you should avoid crashing it too heavily, and then return a week later.”

It’s a ripping exposé from Harris and the fallout could be very interesting. Will other journos stand up with “Monkey”, or will they quietly close ranks behind the alleged Maranello mafia?

Ferrari responds to Ford’s F150 claims

Ferrord F150

Ferrari has responded to Ford’s claims of trademark infringement over the use of the F150 name by agreeing to rename its 2011 Formula One car the Ferrari 150th Italia. Indeed, Ferrari say this was always the full name of the car, but they abbreviated it to F150 for convenience. Really?!

We think this is all a load of baloney, to be honest. Yes, Ford has a right to protect its trademarks and intellectual property. However, was anyone really going to get a high-tech F1 car seen only on the world’s best racetracks muddled up with a low-tech pickup seen only in front of Moe’s Tavern? Obviously, perhaps, Ferrari agree as well, stating, “It is very difficult to understand Ford’s viewpoint on the matter.”

Anyway, Ferrari has obliged and it sounds like Ford won’t be getting any compensation from Ferrari. You can read their full statement below.

Ford wants Ferrari to stop using F150 name

Ferrari F150 logo

Until late January, when Ferrari launched their 2011 F1 car, the name F150 immediately conjured up images of hillbillies chowing down some grits for breakfast before heading off to… well, let’s not go there, lest Ford’s lawyers come our way as well. The point being Ford’s F-series truck range is well known the world over. And it just so happens the F-150, launched in 1975, is the most successful model in that range.

Ferrari has put noses seriously out of joint at Dearborn by calling their latest F1 car the F150. Last year it was the F10, so it stood to reason this year’s car would be known as the F11. However, 2011 marks 150th anniversary of Italy’s unification. So, it also seems perfectly reasonable for such an iconic brand like Ferrari to honour that occasion by referring to it in the name of their ultimate automotive creation.

Well, too bad, say Ford and they are currently suing Ferrari for, among other things, trademark infringement over the use of the F150 name. On the face of it, that seems fair enough. Although, the Ford allegations cite irreparable damage to it’s F-150 trademark. We’re not so sure that is really the case, but that’s for the US District Court in Detroit to decide, not us.

Further, Ford isn’t happy at Ferrari’s microsite for their F1 car—www.ferarrif150.com—and they’re submitting a US$100,000 damages claim under the US Anticybersquatting Consumer Protection Act. They also want Ferrari to cough up any profits they earn in the US by using the F150 name.

This could get interesting, we’ll keep a watching brief and wait to see what happens next.

Ferrari unveils 2011 F1 car

Ferrari F150

Ferrari has taken the lead in the 2011 Formula One season already by being the first team to launch its new car. Ferrari have labelled this one the F150; no, it’s not an old Ford pickup, but a 21st century racing machine.

Out go the blown diffuser and “F-duct” rear wings and back comes KERS along with the addition of adjustable rear wings. A ban on engine development means the 2.4 litre V8 fitted to this car is the same unit used in last year’s F10.

More photos and press material from Ferrari, including a video walk around of the F150, can be seen after the break. Remember, too, 2000px wallpaper-friendly images can be accesed by clicking on any of the pics.

Ferrari FF creates online hysteria

Ferrari FF

Well, Ferrari would have us believe the four-set, four-wheel drive FF created online hysteria when it was revealed a few days ago. Check out their presser after the break.

To celebrate they have released a few new pics. Sadly only the image shown above is of any use, the rest are a disguised development model shown during winter testing. However, in silver and with studio lighting, you begin to get a broader appreciation for the curves featured on the FF; some gentle, some not so.

Ferrari FF gets on the four seater wagon

Ferrari FF

Ferrari has just released these images of its new FF—a four-seater 612 Scaglietti replacement. It looks a bit like the BMW Z3 Coupé, otherwise known as “the breadvan”. But this breadvan is from Maranello and has a 6.3 litre V12 pumping out 660PS (485kW). It even features Ferrari’s first ever all-wheel drive system; hence the FF name—four seats and four-wheel drive.

Ferrari reckon the “Four” can sprint to 100km/h in a mere 3.7 seconds. Aston Martin Rapide and Porsche Panamera take notice!

While full details are scarce at this stage Ferrari claim their patented “4RM” all-wheel drive technology is around half the weight of conventional all-paw units and has been installed to help maintain optimum weight distribution.

These first three images are a teaser for the car’s official reveal at Geneva in March. Also available below is a video about the car and its development, as seen on www.ferrarifour.com. To cap things off there’s an audio sample of the engine sound for you as well.

Well, what do you think? For us, two words come to mind: bonkers and ungainly.

Ferrari 599 GTO arrives in Australia

Ferrari 599 GTO

The first of only 10 Ferrari 599 GTO examples to be delivered to Australia and New Zealand has arrived in Sydney. And doesn’t it look just a wee bit special in its matt black paint job. There’s plenty more pics after the break, too.

You can’t help but be swept away in a sweeping curve of desire when you look at this car. In true Ferrari tradition the car is powered by a V12, mounted underneath that long and slender bonnet. You know it will eat up the miles with embarrassing ease as well.

The raw numbers of the latest GTO are huge—500kW (670hp) and 620Nm from the 6.0 litre engine headline proceedings. They are ably supported by a 0–100km/h dash of just 3.3 seconds and a top speed of 335km/h. The 599 GTO is currently the fastest road car to lap the company’s famous Fiorano test track, with the bar lowered to 1 minute 24 seconds.

According to Kevin Wall, General Manager for Ferrari in Australia and New Zealand, “The Ferrari 599 GTO represents the pinnacle of Ferrari road cars in every area.”

Frankly, it’s hard to disagree.
