2011 Italian Grand Prix in pictures

2011 Italian Grand Prix

Here’s your pictorial reminder of what went down at the 2011 Italian Grand Prix. Unusually, this includes a few pics of Mark driving around in his busted car as well. Seems most teams don’t like showing broken cars when the driver is mostly at fault. There’s been a few exceptions, though, and we’re always keen to share them when they arise.

Lotus, Mercedes GP and Renault didn’t come to play with many pics from Sunday’s action. We’ve used a few Saturday fillers for you, which we prefer not to do. However, we can’t have you miss out on your fair share of pics.

There’s 80 pics in all this time around, all waiting for you after the break. Knock yourselves out!

2011 Italian GP: Post-race press conference

2011 Italian Grand Prix

The fat lady is  preparing her vocal chords and we expect she will be singing Sebastian Vettel’s tune at the next Grand Prix. That’s right, following yet another peerless drive from Vettel to win the 2011 Italian Grand Prix, he can formally wrap up the 2011 drivers’ title at Singapore in a couple of weeks if results go his way.

In Monza overnight Vettel’s only concerns came following a bullet-like start from Fernando Alonso (Ferrari) to steal the lead. The Safety Car quickly came out after Tonio Liuzzi’s (HRT) slip’n’slide move on the grass cleaned up a few midfield runners.

When the lights went green Vettel had the Ferrari in his sights and pulled a sterling move on the outside of Curva Grande to reclaim the lead. The 24-year-old is silencing the doubters who claim he cannot race wheel-to-wheel when the going gets tough. He may still have a bit to learn in that regard, but his last two races have shown he is head of the class.

In all of the chaos around him Jenson Button (McLaren), who had a poor start, quietly worked his way into second place with a mature drive. Again Alonso struggled on the harder tyres and held on for third, denying Lewis Hamilton’s (McLaren) late race charge for a podium place.

It was a bad day for the Australians, with Daniel Ricciardo (HRT) stalling on the start line. He was able to eventually get going again and complete a total of 39 laps but he was “not classified” so it was a data gathering exercise for the team and no more. Mark Webber (Red Bull) meanwhile put himself between a rock and Felipe Massa’s Ferrari and lost his front wing in the process. A few corners later, with parts of the wing lodged in his undertray, he lost steering and went off into a tyre barrier ending his race.

Webber’s DNF has relegated him from second to fourth in the drivers’ standings. He’s on 167 points, behind Button (167pts, ahead on wins), Alonso (172pts) and the 2011 champion-in-waiting Vettel (284pts).

More from the top three after the break.

2011 Belgian Grand Prix in pictures

2011 Belgian Grand Prix

As we headed into the mid-season break last month it seemed as though Ferrari and McLaren had closed the gap on Red Bull. Combined they had won three races in a row. However, the Belgian Grand Prix showed that Red Bull were having no more of that and managed to score a comfortable 1-2 victory; the team’s tenth Formula One quinella.

In the end Vettel and Webber took the top two places with a reasonable degree of comfort. Not a bad result, really, when you consider their pre-race tyre dramas or that the high speed nature of Spa is not really suited to the RB7.

A special mention to Michael Schumacher, too, who finished a very creditable fifth after starting from last place on the grid. Notably, Nico Rosberg was one place behind in sixth, despite storming to the lead on the first lap.

After the break there’s a further 95 images to help you recapture the vibe.

2011 Belgian Grand Prix

After the break you can watch a brief clip from the BBC post-race coverage at the Belgian Grand Prix. Mark Webber was flagged down by the crew and was asked about that move on Fernando Alonso at Eau Rouge. Brilliant stuff!

John Surtees & Fernando Alonso shoot the breeze

John Surtees and Fernando Alonso

In the build up to this weekend’s Belgian Grand Prix we’re sure you’ll enjoy this video with John Surtees and Fernando Alonso sharing their thoughts about the famous Spa-Francorchamps circuit.

Surtees is the only man to win a world championship in Formula One (Ferrari: 1963) and 500cc Grand Prix racing (MV Augusta: 1956, 1958–1960). Alonso, of course, has two F1 championships to his name (Renault: 2005, 2006). He will be elevated into true hero status if he can reach the summit with Ferrari.

Getting a couple of world champions together, plus some on-track action, filming it all; the costs add up. See if you can work out who picked up the tab.

OFFICIAL: Ferrari 458 Italia Spider

Ferrari 458 Italia Spider

Ferrari is another to release new info of their latest model following the recent appearance of leaked photos. So, here is the official news on the 458 Italia Spider, plus a handful of pics.

It is simply spectacular! The Spider may even look better than the hardtop. It’s certainly more dramatic and, with the roof off, it makes it easier to get away when your beautiful 458 catches on fire.

The Spider weighs in at 1430kg, some 50kg heavier than the regular 458 Italia. That means you’ll need to allow an extra few tenths of a second to get to 100km/h. But if you put all the electronic gadgets to the right setting you’ll still be launched to the highway limit in around 3.5 seconds, thanks largely to its 4.5 litre V8 spitting out prancing horses at the rate of 425kW.

The Ferrari 458 Spider will arrive in Australia at the end of 2012, when prices and specifications will be announced.

There’s more after the break, including a short video showing off the Spider’s folding metal roof.

Ferrari 458 Italia Spider images leaked

Ferrari 458 Italia Spider

Ferrari will be officially unveiling the 458 Italia Spider at the Frankfurt Motor Show in a few weeks. As is the norm these days the interwebz has rather spoiled the surprise following the appearance of three images of the 570hp roadster.

Mostly this will simply be a regular 458 Italia with its roof cut out; engine and spec is expected to be the same. Of course, there will be extra strenghtening for the chassis which will add some extra weight.

Hunt–Lauda contest to be made into F1 film

James Hunt

Academy Award winning movie director Ron Howard is in the early stages of bringing Formula One to film. This won’t be a documentary in the style of Senna, rather a big budget production with all the Hollywood trimmings. The movie will centre around the 1976 Formula One season.

That year saw an epic battle between loveable larrikin James Hunt and austere Austrian Niki Lauda. It was the year Lauda had his horrific crash at the Nürburgring Nordschleife and signalled the end of F1 races at the ‘Green Hell’.

Prior to the crash Lauda had already notched up five wins for the year and was fast heading towards his second world championship. Despite missing just two races as a result of his injuries the courageous Lauda would not win another race for the year.

In the latter stages of 1976, including the German Grand Prix, Hunt won four races of his own, giving him six victories in all for the year. It was enough to give the Briton his only world title by the narrowest margin possible, just one point.
