Citroën DS3 R3 – customer rally car

Citroen DS3 R3

This spunky looking machine is Citroën’s latest rally car. The DS3 R3 has been developed for the FIA’s R3T category and  features a 1.6 litre turbocharged engine pumping out 210 horsepower. There’s also a pretty healthy 350Nm on offer. Drawing on the technical knowledge of the immensely successful C4 WRC program the DS3 R3 is fitted with a 6-speed sequential gearbox.

The DS3 R3 is essentially a customer car and already has 10,000km of testing across all kinds of typical rallying surfaces under its belt. The R3 is scheduled to make its race debut towards the end of this year. Citroën Racing starts with a road going DS3 THP 150 and will make the racecars available in kit or ready-to-race form.

VIDEO: Citroën C4 MkII

Citroen C4 MkII

Following the first look at the new C4 MkII this morning, Citroën have released this video of the C4 which shows the car from a variety of angles. What do you think? Do you reckon The European would actually buy this one.

First look at the 2011 Citroën C4

Citroen C4

Citroën have revealed these first images of the new C4 MkII. The new model is set for a full reveal at the Paris Motor Show in September. Australian buyers will be able to get their first taste of the new C4 around this time next year.

They’ve rounded off the edges of the old C4 and come up with quite a smart looking car. Based on these pics anyway. The interior, too, has a quality look about it. Let’s not mention the wheels, though. They have a certain a la Tempe about them.

Okay, overall maybe the look of the C4 is a bit on the safe side. On paper, at least, it works and presents a credible option to buyers that can sit alongside the class leaders. We’ll be better placed to judge after the Paris Motor Show.

More after the break.

UPDATE: More new pics have been added below.

The European: Do as I say, not as I do

AUSmotive.com - The European
Citroen BX GTi

I really like Citröens. A lot. And even when they were mundane and faceless. Way back when the DS was something even your dad had forgotten about and they’d long since done everything they could to make their cars as conformist as KRudd. The thing is, during this period they actually turned out some hidden gems. Gems like the BX GTi, a car that really had the whole everything-you’d-ever-need-from-one-car all wrapped up. (Addendum to my last note to Audi: So you don’t have to spin off 452 body styles from the A4 platform of decreasing marginal distinction, how about getting one just right instead? Ask the French for advice.)

The GTi in 16 valve form had 119kW and could meet 100km/h in the mid 7s, which is frankly not slow. And, yet, it rode like the proverbial magic carpet. In all reality this is what you actually want from a car, right? To feel like suspension design has evolved past the antiquity of the horse and cart. Plus, the Gallic charmer could slip around a twisty back road with alacrity. It even raced, and raced well, at Bathurst – confirming their advertising slogan, “Built for driving, not for garages”.

Geneva: Citroën Survolt Concept

Citroen Survolt Concept

Citroën have gone all Batmobile-like with this crazy Survolt Concept. It’s a pretty wild looking machine and that’s about all I can tell you about it. There is a press release below, but the only real information it gives away is that the Survolt “is the continuation of Citroën’s exploration of distinctive and original electric vehicles”.

Oh, one more thing, the car’s measurements, of course, 3.85m long, 1.87m wide and 1.20m high. So, it’s small, electric and sporty looking. What more could you possibly need to know? More pics and pretty words after the break.

Citroën DS3 Racing – another Geneva preview

Citroen DS3 Racing

The pre-release of images and details prior to Geneva continues with Citroën showing off its new DS3 Racing. It will be limited to just 1000 cars and is schedlued for European relase in the latter half of this year. Looking at the images, well, she’s a bit lairy, don’t you think! But in a good way. Although that opinion will vary wildly among readers I am sure.

Based on the DS3 THP 150 we first saw last August, the DS3 Racing version trades off the company’s rally success and has been sent to Citroën Racing for a bit of a going over. Le boffins fiddled around with the 1.6-litre engine and its electronic brain to increase peak power by 30% and torque by 15% to 200bhp and 275Nm.

While they were doing that some spare boffins found time to sharpen the steering, drop the ride height by 15mm and, perhaps most significantly, widen the front and rear tracks by 30mm. That last tweak should offer superior road holding to ensure there is plenty of fantastique froggy cornering goodness.

As if the orange paint detailing didn’t scream loudly enough that this is a more sporty DS3 there’s also a bunch of stickers plastered all over the car to help ram the point home. In a weird sort of way the more Citroën pushes the envelope in this regard, the more appealing it becomes.

More pics after the break, I’d love to hear what you think of the DS3 Racing’s wild looks.

UPDATE: Press release from Citroën Australia has been added below, which drops a hint that we might see the DS3 Racing in Australia.

UPDATE 21 Feb: When asked if the DS3 Racing would be coming to our shores Citroën Australia spokesman Edward Rowe replied, “It’s possible, we will not know for certain until the end of the year.”

Kimi Raikkonen wants WRC challenge

Kimi Raikkonen

There’s an interesting interview with WRC-bound Kimi Raikkonen over at The Red Bulletin website. Despite claiming he could return to F1 at a time of his choosing Kimi gives the indication his WRC debut cannot come soon enough.

“It’s definitely the biggest challenge yet. I’ve got to learn everything from scratch. But I want the challenge. I have to get to know the car, the rallies, how to work with my co-driver [Kai Lindström], everything. I’m looking forward to it,” Raikkonen continued, “I’m finding a bit of the young Kimi in me again.”

With rumours that Raikkonen’s new found connections with Red Bull could spell doom and gloom for Mark Webber, the following comments won’t exactly put Webber’s mind at ease, but they won’t have him trembling with fear either, “I could get an F1 drive again any time, but lots of bad things are happening in F1. Manufacturers are pulling out. Let’s have the same conversation in a year’s time. Let’s look way into the future.”

The article is definitely worth checking out as Kimi covers a number of topics, including his first rallying experience, a startling inability to name one F1 highlight (“I’d find it difficult to pick a single moment from the last nine years”) and much more.

Kimi Raikkonen signs with Citroën junior rally team

Kimi signs with Citroen Racing

Kimi Raikonnen will take part in 12 of the 13 rounds of next year’s World Rally Championship. The news was confirmed earlier today by Citroën Sport, who announced Raikonnen will form part of their Citroën Junior Team racing in C4 WRCs.

According to Kimi this deal fulfils a life long ambition, “I always wanted to compete in rally, especially in the World Rally Championship at some point in my career.

“Thanks to Red Bull, I have the opportunity to drive the best car of the series with the Citroën C4. This is a new but very exciting challenge. For the moment we have a one-year contract and we will see how it goes for the future. I am really looking forward to testing the car and taking the start of the first rally.”

Raikkonen took part in the Rally of Finland earlier this year, behind the wheel of a Fiat (pictured above) and, well, things didn’t exactly work out for the best. Here’s hopeing he keeps it shiny side up in 2010.

Sixth sense

Sebastien Loeb - WRC 2009

The Citröen Racing partnership of Sébastien Loeb and Daniel Elena secured their sixth successive WRC title overnight by winning the final rally of the year, the Rally of Great Britain. The rally, set in the Welsh countryside, was a tight battle between Loeb/Elena and Ford’s Mikko Hirvonen/Jarmo Lehtinen pairing, and provided a snapshot of the season itself.

Hirvonen started the rally with a one point lead over Loeb in the title race, but it wasn’t enough. The Frenchman won the race, the Finn was second. Loeb’s victory reversed the drivers’ title scenario and he grasped the world championship from Hirvonen by a single point (93 points to 92).

Loeb had established a 30 second lead at the start of the final day, but desperate driving from Hirvonen reduced the deficit to 18 seconds after the first two stages of the day.

On the second last stage the title was all but decided when a bonnet pin on Hirvonen’s car broke and forced the bonnet to open. Hirvonen had to stop and take the dramatic option of tearing off the bonnet completely before he could continue. This gave Loeb a lead of almost 90 seconds and the chance to drive with caution on the final stage to clinch his sixth world crown.

“There were so much pressure right up to the end of the rally,” said Sébastien Loeb amidst a swarm of microphones. “We had a good start to the year, but then encountered a few problems. However, we got back on top of things just before this rally. Finally, we’ve managed to win the title again, on the penultimate stage. Mikko didn’t give up and I had to push right to the finish. It’s never easy to compare one title with another, but I think this is the best one in terms of the sporting battle we had.”

Get an Eiffel of the new Citroën C3!

Citroen C3

Whoa, that cheesy headline is not mine. Credit for that goes entirely to Citroën PR who are pushing their 90th birthday celebrations. It also happens to be the 120th birthday of the Eiffel Tower and, not letting a marketing opportunity slip, Citroën are once again uniting the two French icons for a light show which is set to launch on 22 October.

In the late 1920s and early 1930s the Eiffel Tower was a piece of advertising scaffolding supporting giant Citröen signage. At the time it was the world’s largest advertising sign. Now, in 2009, the two will combine again with a 12 minute light show that will run for three months.

Footage of the opening night will broadcast across the net with images captured from cameras placed inside several new Citröen C3s parked nearby in specially selected locations. It’s all about showing off the C3’s massive front windscreen, you see.

More detail in Citröen’s presser below.

Citroën DS3 – it’s like a MINI, but French

Citroen DS3

You may remember the DS Inside Concept from earlier this year. Well, as it turns out, that was pretty much an exact preview of the new DS3 model which will be launched at, yep, you guessed it, the Frankfurt Motor Show next month.

Back in February, the sizing, use of exterior colours and desire to create something fresh and different for the small car segment screamed of chasing MINI sales. Now, with more detail on the DS3 released, that target on the MINI brand has become larger with Citroën revealing plans for highly customisable options, including paint colours and interior trims. You know, just like MINI offers.

Naturally, competition is a good thing, so it will be interesting to see how MINI counters this new threat. I don’t think it will be by reducing their prices!

Due for release in the European spring next year the DS3 has evolved from Citroën’s “créative technologie” mantra. It will be the first model released from the company’s new DS line, which Citroën describes as being “distinctively styled, attention-grabbing models”.

Loads more after the jump, and, as always, if you want larger sized images, just knock yourself out by clicking on the pic you like and voila a wallpaper friendly 2000px super image will be all yours.
