Detroit 2013: Chevrolet Corvette Stingray

2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray

An American car featured on AUSmotive; what’s going on?! But it’s a Stingray!

Truth be told, we knew those interested in the new C7 Corvette would have already read up on it and figured it wouldn’t be worth running. But when we looked a bit closer and saw those, let’s face it, pretty stupid centre-mount quad exhaust tips we just had to get in on the act.

Like many things American, those tips are stupid in such a loveable way.

Also, in GM’s current renaissance we’d not be surprised if this 2014 Chevrolet Corvette turned out to be a half decent drive. It’ll be plenty fast, that we can be sure of.

You’ll get that when you stick a brand new 335kW/610Nm 6.2 litre V8 into a “lightweight” coupé boasting better power-to-weight numbers than a Porsche 911 or Audi R8. At least, that’s what the marketing boffins at Chevy are claiming. They’ve not published the kerbweight of the C7 Stingray so we can check for ourselves.

Get this, there’s gee-whiz carbon fibre body panels, a hydroformed aluminium frame and even a 7-speed manual box as well. The Yanks have discovered the 21st century! There’s also some serious irony here that in time, American cars may prove to be the last bastion of the manual transmission.

If this new Stingray has grabbed you by the balls and made a man out of you then why not satisfy your feminine side by reading all about it in the full media kit made available for all at the very friendly GM media portal.

Infographic: James Bond’s car history

James Bond's Aston Martin DB5 as featured in Skyfall

As we near the global premiere of the latest James Bond flick, Skyfall, it’s quite timely that clever clogs Evans Halshaw has come up trumps with this infographic capturing the history of Bond’s garage in one easy to see location.

Thanks must go to Evans as well for encouraging the embedding of the graphic, which you can see in long form after the break. We also recommend checking out Halshaw’s website for the interactive version.

As you can see, it’s not all been expensive Aston Martins for 007.

VIDEO: Oh deer!

Chevrolet Corvette Z06 hits deer

Here is a pretty nasty video of a chap called James Greenwood killing Bambi in his Crovette Z06 at a track day in West Virginia. Neither of them had a chance really. The clip itself is not over the top with Bambi’s blood and guts, but if you’re the queasy type we suggest don’t take the jump to see what happens next.

2012 Geneva Motor Show in pictures – part 1

2012 Geneva Motor Show

After a couple of days for press previews the doors to the 2012 Geneva Motor Show are about to be opened to the public. Figuring you probably can’t make it we’re bringing you our biggest photo gallery ever. That’s right, there’ll be over 200 images from the floor of Geneva for you to enjoy.

We’ve kept things varied and ensured there’s dream cars, like the Ferrari F12berlinetta and Lamborghini Aventador J, as well as everyday stuff like the new Audi A3 and the Subaru Impreza Hatch. Then there’s the Valmet Automotive Dawn. We’re not quite sure what that is and you’ll see it in part 2 of our gallery, to be added later today.

After the break you can enjoy the first installment where we’ve taken an alphabetical approach and presented manufacturers from A–K.

Is this the world’s best driving song?

Have you ever wondered what would happen if the Wiggles returned to their pop/rock roots and took their theatrical skills on the road (literally)? Well wonder no more because OK Go has provided the answer with this rather cool film clip for their single ‘Needing/Getting’.

From the clip’s YouTube description:

The new music video from OK Go, made in partnership with Chevrolet. OK Go set up over 1000 instruments over two miles of desert outside Los Angeles. A Chevy Sonic was outfitted with retractable pneumatic arms designed to play the instruments, and the band recorded this version of Needing/Getting, singing as they played the instrument array with the car. The video took 4 months of preparation and 4 days of shooting and recording. There are no ringers or stand-ins; Damian took stunt driving lessons. Each piano had the lowest octaves tuned to the same note so that they’d play the right note no matter where they were struck. For more information and behind-the-scenes footage, see http://www.LetsDoThis.com and http://www.okgo.net. Many thanks to Chevy for believing in and supporting such an insane and ambitious project, and to Gretsch for providing the guitars and amps.

[Thanks to Matt for the tip]

2012 Detroit Motor Show photo gallery

2012 Detroit Motor Show

Here we have a selection of images from the floor of the Detroit Motor Show, or more correctly, the North American International Auto Show.

Unlike Tokyo late last year there’s a noticeable lack of weird and wonderful concept creations, but we certainly applaud the appearance of the Honda NSX Concept. It’s easily the clear star of the show in our eyes.

Not so fortunate is the Chevrolet Code 130R concept; a BMW 1 Series Coupé that somehow turned out all wrong. So, too, the Chrysler 700C. Seriously, does anyone actually look at these things before they are put on the stand. And if they do, then we’ll have some of whatever it is they’re smoking please.

Equally, we can’t quite understand the fascination the North American audience has had with the Ford Fusion. Its poor mans Aston Martin-like grille is an embarrassment.

Anyway, there’s 50-odd pictures for you after the break. Why don’t you be the judge and tell us what you like and don’t like.

Chevrolet Miray heading to Frankfurt

Chevrolet Miray

You’re looking at the Chevrolet Miray concept. It’s quite spectacular in its own right, let alone for an American car.

The Miray was first revealed at the Seoul Motor Show in March and is relies on carbon fibre body panels to help make its radical styling lightweight. Powered by a pair of electric motors and a 1.5 litre turbocharged four cylinder the Miray should be quite spritely around town as well.

It’s a great looking concept and we’ll be seeing more of it Frankfurt next month.

Chevrolet Camaro – World Car Design of the Year 2010

Chevrolet Camaro

Has the world gone mad? Did pigs just fly by my window? An American car acknowledged on the world stage for its design. Surely there must be some kind of mistake, great automotive design comes from Europe, doesn’t it?

Apparently not, as jurors for the World Car Awards have seen fit to bestow the Camaro with the honour of World Car Design of the Year. One of the judges, Sam Livingstone, Associate Editor of Car Design News, praised the Camaro for its “innately seductive exterior and interior.” He went on to say, “It’s well resolved and I’d argue evidence that General Motors strikes a better balance than Ford and Chrysler do in their pony cars.”

The Camaro pipped the Citroen C3 Picasso and the Kia Soul to earn its stripes. According to ex-pat Aussie Mike Simcoe, who now holds the position of Chevrolet Design Director, it was passion that inspired the retro coupé, “In recreating this modern sports car, we have proven that people are just as passionate about Chevy as ever. We have been delighted about the strong reaction to the Camaro—even in markets that are new to Chevy, it has been creating an emotional appeal for the brand.”

Plato philosophical about great save

Fifth Gear’s Jason Plato is currently getting about in the BTCC in a reasonably priced car—a Chevrolet Lacetti. Something not so reasonable, though, was the tap up the backside given to him by BMW driver Jonathan Adam at Brands Hatch last weekend.

Watch the clip above to see the amazing car control shpwn by Plato as he keeps the car going in its intended direction, even if it was pointing in an entirely different one.

There’s also a brief post-race interview with Plato who found out that his bag of talent actually had a bit more in there than he first thought.

Chevrolet Nissan Porsche Targa Tasmania

Three icons to make world debut at Targa Tasmania

The iconic nameplates of Porsche GT2, Nissan GT-R and Corvette Z06 will all make their worldwide tarmac rally debuts at the 2008 Targa Tasmania, held from 15-20 April. The newly launched R35 Nissan GT-R, to be driven by Tony Alford, is one of the most keenly anticipated new cars in recent years and Australia is very lucky to be having the car running in such a high profile local event.

The Corvette will be driven by Neil and Daniel Ford, and there will also be a second Z06 to be used as a support vehicle. I wonder how many spare parts will be removed from that car before the event is over!

The other big name, the Porsche GT2, will see Targa Porsche stalwarts Jim Richards and Barry Oliver in the cockpit. Expect this experienced team to be fighting for outright honours. The GT2 and GT-R will most probably be duelling in this event just as they have been trading Nürburgring Nordschleife lap times. Just another interesting sidenote to this year’s Targa.

Stay tuned for some detailed reports on the event from AUSmotive, more on that later.
