BMW confirms 330d sedan for Australia

BMW 330d Sedan

BMW Australia has confirmed news that the 330d will be available here in 2009. While exact dates and pricing are yet to be confirmed, the all new 180kW 6-cylinder diesel will be in showrooms sometime after April.

The use of turbo technology gives the oil burner a massive 550Nm of torque, available from just 1750rpm. The 330d will be available with a 6-speed automatic transmission only and the economic fuel consumption of 6.8l/100km will see the car benefit from a higher $75,000 Luxury Car Tax threshold.

Golden Steering Wheel Awards for BMW and Volkswagen

Golf VI wins Golden Steering Wheel Award

The BMW 1 Series Coupé and the Volkswagen Golf VI have both joined Audi’s Q5 in the Golden Steering Wheel winners circle. The Golden Steering Wheel Awards, run by German newspaper Bild am Sonntag, were founded by Axel Springer 33 years ago and have been awarded every year since.

An expert jury from Bild am Sonntag honoured the best new releases of the year, among them the 6th generation Golf, for a “superior win in the compact class”.

“The win of four categories confirms that the whole Group took the right course. We offer an incomparable spectrum of models and an enormous variation of design and technology. We make the perfect cars for everyone”, says Prof. Martin Winterkorn, chairman of the Board of management at Volkswagen AG.

BMW’s result was based on a readers’ poll in which the 1 Series Coupé two-door received 26.4 per cent of a total of the 220,000 plus votes cast. Australian buyers have also been enamoured with the two-door BMW coupé since it went on sale in May, with over 500 customer deliveries.

A BMW TV commercial likewise won first prize in the 2008 Golden Steering Wheel. The ad, for the Night Vision system on the 5 Series, can be seen below in a clip from BMW-web.tv, which also includes a brief interview with Ian Robertson, Board Member for Sales and Marketing.

BMW M3 Sedan & Convertible – Australian pricing

E90 BMW M3 Sedan

With the imminent arrival of the M3 Sedan and Convertible, BMW Australia has announced pricing for all three models in the M3 range. Those in the cheap seats will need to start with the Sedan where pricing begins at $145,000. The iconic Coupé starts at $162,901 and only captains of industry need apply for the Convertible—for the wife, of course—with a list price of $176,142.

The Sedan comes with quite a list of goodies, such as, an 8.8″ screen Satellite Navigation system (with TV), voice recognition, bluetooth mobile phone prep, LOGIC7 hi-fi, heated leather seats and adaptive xenon headlights.

Formula 1 technology boffins will delight at the M3’s Brake Energy Regeneration system which channels energy from overrun and braking to recharge the battery, thereby allowing maximum power to be applied. Which is just what you want when you have 309kW of power and 400Nm or torque willing you on to 100km/h in under five seconds.

The M3 Convertible shouldn’t be too hard to find in Australian showrooms as you read this, and the Sedan will be available from 22 November.

BMW Australia upgrades 3 Series pricing

2009 BMW 3 Series

Later this month the 2009 model upgrade of the BMW 3 Series will roll out across the country’s showrooms. The range will start with the 320i at $54,100 and, M3 aside, tops out with the 335i at $111,700.

As to be expected the options and standard equipment levels have also been given a tweak, along with the exterior styling. This includes standard leather seats, Park Distance Control, fog lights and rain sensors across the range.

Over 25,000 E90 3 Series models have been sold in Australia to date and the top brass seem to think they are on a winner, “The BMW 3 Series is the most successful luxury compact sport sedan in the world and we have further improved the offering to the market with the new cars,” said Tom Noble, General Manager, Marketing, BMW Group Australia. “The range is extremely well equipped from the start, at a very attractive price point below the Luxury Car Tax threshold.”

Post increases to the Luxury Car Tax manufacturers are quick to grab a marketing edge and BMW is no different, with the 320d being exempt thanks to the car’s 6.0l/100km fuel consumption figures.

Pricing of the new BMW 3 Series Sedan and Touring range:

Sedan

  • 320i Executive – $54,500
  • 320d Executive – $57,500
  • 323i – $63,200
  • 325i – $75,900
  • 335i – $107,300

Touring

  • 320i Executive – $57,700
  • 323i – $67,400
  • 335i – $111,700

More details in BMW’s release after the jump…

BMW 135i undergoes impromptu crash test!

Ouch!

This BMW 135i suffered an unwanted fate after a nearby building came crashing down on top of it. The car, a BMW press vehicle, was under the watch of Wheels journalist Samantha Stevens. You can read all about it, and see more images of woe at the Wheelsmag blog. Ironically, Samantha had the 135i because the M3 she was hoping to collect was ‘no longer available’. Let’s hope the M3 didn’t meet a similar demise!

Testament to the little Beemer’s intrinsic strength is this comment from Samantha’s post:

“A positive note to this sad story can be found in the pictures. The 135i’s rigid body structure upheld the impact of several tonnes of metal falling square on its vulnerable middle roof. Its optional sunroof didn’t even shatter. So our BMW 135i has proven it’s as strong as houses – by having one land on top of it.

Had passengers been in the car at the time, only the rear-passenger side occupant would have one hell of a headache. The four other cars under the rubble didn’t fare so well, though they were older models and had borne more of the impact.”

Amazingly, the attending tow truck driver was not only able to start the car, but also drive it on to the flatbed to take the car away!

Trivia buffs will have noticed this was also the same car used in Top Gear Australia‘s test which went to air on SBS last night.

The BMW 507 – a timeless classic

Chris Bangle’s flame inspired visual language has certainly polarised BMW fans the world over. Even the latest BMW design, the Concept X1, has attracted its fair share of criticism. So, in a world of armchair experts and internet engineers, let’s all just relax and enjoy the 1950s classic BMW 507—a design that has aged as gracefully as it looks.

Sourcing good images of the 507 was a little problematic, however, I did find a lovely old skool illustration, which you can see below.

A lap of Spa-Francorchamps with Robert Kubica

I’ve been waiting for BMW-web.tv to load this clip all week—now they have and it’s only a computer generated lap of Spa! They usually use real in-car footage. Never mind, it’s a great track any way you look at it. Mind, as a commentator BMW-Sauber’s Robert Kubica makes a great racing driver.

See you on the couch late into the night this weekend. Rain is predicted, as usual, the championship race is very tight, so we have the makings of a cracking race. Hold on tight!

BMW M3 race version

Regular trawlers of motoring websites will know information on this BMW M3 race version is not new. This does not mean its late arrival on AUSmotive is any less worthy however. A replacement for the awesome BMW M3 GTR the new M3 race version is all set for the 2009 American Le Mans Series. Like the previous GTR one would expect this M3 to have a crack at the Nürburgring 24 hour race in 2009 as well. Enjoy this clip above from bmw-web.tv before going all ga-ga over the glory of the images below (click each pic for a 2000px super image). Just look at it! There’s also enough technical data in BMW’s press information to keep anyone happy.

2009 BMW E90 3 Series

2009 BMW 3 Series

BMW’s most important model, the 3 Series, has recently been given a bit of a spring clean. And look at that, the lads in Munich still had a few extra crease lines in the back of their cupboards that needed some air. Good thing then, that, despite negative hype, BMW actually do know how to design a car. This mid cycle refresh has kept the 3 Series looking sharp, both figuratively and literally.

Other more obvious exterior changes included a revised headlight cluster, now with LED turn signals. The famous BMW kidney grille has been enlarged and better suits the reskinned bonnet lines. The lighting changes continue at the back, too, with a more L shaped design employed, fitting into a restyled boot detail.

Inside there is a reworked iDrive system, an 80GB hard drive for music storage, and perhaps more importantly, it can also be used for map storage to aid navigation capabilities. A few other minor cosmetic tweaks have been made, including a repositioning of window switchgear.

More detail can be read below in BMW Australia’s press release, including a full suite of photos. You’ll be able to see the new 3 Series range in Australia in early 2009.

BMW automobile guide – All production models since 1928

BMW automobile guide - All production models since 1928BMW Group have just released this handy model guide in PDF format. Featuring simple side on line drawings of all their automobiles from 1928 through to 2008. The guide also includes useful information on production numbers for BMW models that have ceased production. For example, the stunning 507 coupé had 251 models built between 1956-59. While there were 6,291 ‘breadvan’ M coupés built between 1998-2002.

MINI and Rolls Royce models built under BMW ownership are also featured in this guide. Although, the MINI trainspotter in me can see that the line drawing for the R53 Cooper S is not quite right. How so? The lower side skirt detail is incorrect and there is no bulge in the bonnet for the scoop.

Most of the drawings are vector based with sharp, limitless detail. Some drawings, for whatever reason, are crude bitmap based images, which is a shame. Regardless, this is a great resource and AUSmotive is happy to make this document available to you:
