If you tolerate this then your children will be next

You may remember the earlier news that saw the worldwide BMW Z4 ‘art of driving’ television commercial pulled from Australian screens. I stated at the time that, as a sign of protest against this ludicrous decision, AUSmotive will be running the above footage, which is featured in the commercial, on the first day of every month for the rest of the year.

The fact that regulations are in place that deem this ad inappropriate is a sad indictment on the state of the road safety debate in this country. The fact that some members of society are unable separate entertainment from reality is equally disturbing. That they are given a voice is mind boggling.

Clearly, the title of this article is tongue in cheek and is designed to highlight the level of paranoia that exists in wowsers when presented with the notion that driving can be fun.

A reminder, too, that you can watch the ad in full on the BMW Australia website. Even better, check out BMW’s Expression of Joy Z4 microsite.

VIDEO: BMW Vision EfficientDynamics

BMW is all excited about this crazy looking coupe, sedan, sportscar, electric powered, diesel, ActiveHybrid thingy. Otherwise known as the Vision EfficientDynamics, the car is a portal to BMW’s goal towards a sustainable and efficient future.

In the clip above you will see and hear a bunch of BMW Execs wax lyrical about their new creation.

Some of the numbers are noteworthy, for example, 0-100km/h in under 5 seconds, fuel consumption under 4l/100km and 262kW/800Nm.

However, others are less so, zero emissions drive with all electric power has a feeble range of 50km. Under hybrid power the CO2 emissions from the diesel engine look okay at first, but really, for a car that is a leader for what is to follow, you might expect a better figure than 99g/km.

One thing the car does well, though, is look sensational. It’s hard to judge if it has any semblance of reality to it, so just enjoy it as a concept car and if, in 30 years time, all cars look like this, then all the merrier!

There’s a press release below and a full wallpaper-friendly image gallery will be has been added.

BMW DCT on the outer already?

BMW DCT - dual clutch transmission

According to a report at BimmerFile the dual clutch transmission (DCT) offered by BMW may be discontinued due to poor take up. The cost to sales ratio makes the case for DCT difficult to support. ZF Friedrichshafen AG, manufacturer of Porsche’s PDK gearbox, predicts a long term market support for their dual clutch tranny is not sustainable.

Personally, I find it hard to see that BMW would drop their DCT after such a short run. But, I guess, if the market isn’t buying it, then there’s no point fighting a losing battle.

Will the words “Grand Prix” ever sounds right when spoken with an American accent?

BMW to quit F1 at end of 2009

BMW quits F1

Today’s earlier rumour has proven to be correct correct, BMW will exit Formula One at the end of the 2009 Season.

BMW’s full press documents can be read after the jump, however, this quote from Dr Norbert Reithofer, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, sums up the company’s position:

“Of course, this was a difficult decision for us. But it’s a resolute step in view of our company’s strategic realignment. Premium will increasingly be defined in terms of sustainability and environmental compatibility. This is an area in which we want to remain in the lead. In line with our Strategy Number ONE, we are continually reviewing all projects and initiatives to check them for future viability and sustainability. Our Formula One campaign is thus less a key promoter for us. Mario Theissen has been in charge of our motor sports program since 1999. We have scored a large number of successes in this period, including some in Formula One racing. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Mario Theissen and his team for this.”

Rumour: BMW set to quit F1?

BMW Sauber at Hungarian GP

BMW have announced what appears to be a hastily convened press conference at its headquarters in Munich. It has been suggested that the German giant could be set to announce its departure from Formula One at the end of the current season. The press conference will be held in the next few hours.

Heading the press conference will be BMW Chairman, Dr Norbert Reithofer and he will be accompanied by senior executives Dr Klaus Draeger, Director for Development, and Mario Theissen, BMW Motorsport Director.

BMW are believed to be close to signing a Concorde Agreement that would commit the team to Formula One through to the completion of the 2012 season. However, this new revelation clearly puts that commitment in serious doubt.

So, BMW could be set to follow Honda and quit F1. Quite where that would leave the Sauber compnent of the BMW Sauber team is anyone’s guess at the moment.

Perhaps the only other news from BMW Motorsport that would generate such heavy hitters at a press conference would be an unlikely announcement that they have lured Michael Schumacher out of retirement.

Nick Heidfeld and Troy Corser swap rides

BMW F1 v Superbike - Nurburgring, July 2009

Nick Heidfeld has chalked up another publicity event at the Nürburgring. Two years after driving his BMW Sauber F1.06 around the Nürburgring Nordschleife he has teamed up with Australian BMW Superbike rider Troy Corser to swap his race suit for some leathers.

This is what Heidfeld had to say after taking the 200hp Superbike for a few laps: “It was a sensational experience, thank you to everyone! I had expected the Superbike to be a huge leap over the production version… The difference is huge. On the one hand the Superbike is more aggressive, builds up more grip and has the superior brakes, but on the other hand it is easier to ride because you can control it so well. The handling is very precise. Obviously I’m still miles from the limit with the superbike; I would love to have done a lot more laps.”

Meanwhile, two-time World Superbike Champion Corser was amazed at the braking capability of the F1 car: “It was just awesome! The car feels so balanced and the brakes are fantastic, the tyres have unbelievable grip and the steering is very direct but still has a lot of feeling. I can’t believe how hard and late you can brake. I know I was braking too early and I really would like to have a day or two with the car to really see what I can do with it.”

A video and a couple of extra pics can be seen after the jump. No doubt the day was a lot of fun for the 700 fans and team partners who attended. And, this time, Heidfeld didn’t have to go home feeling a touch embarrassed!
