BMW Concept 1 Series tii

BMW Concept 1 Series tii

With all the talk about a new ‘M1’/baby M-car, call it what you will, let’s take a look back at the concept car that started it all. This is the BMW Concept 1 Series tii as revealed at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show. Of course, this modern tii badged machine, was inspired by the iconic 2002 model, first released in 1966.

The Concept 1 Series tii features a bunch of add on bits in the form of new wheels, rear spoiler and bonnet fins. A restyled front air dam and rear valance made from carbon-fibre reinforced plastic help to reduce weight over the standard car.

The original details from the Tokyo show didn’t reveal too much in the way of engine mods, rather went on at some length with lots of fluffy text about things that don’t really matter that much. Like the black, white and blue colour shceme, for example. Hey, whaddya know that’s the same colours as the BMW logo. Who’d a thunk it.

Anyway, over two years from its debut it finally looks like something will be made of this concept car. To refresh your memory you can see a full gallery of pics after the jump along with a two part press release, which includes a PDF download (link available below).

Harder, better, faster, stronger

BMW Concept 1 Series tii

Earlier in the week evo reported that BMW have confirmed plans to build a new M1. Well, two, actually. One will be a supercar drawing heavily on the M1 Hommage and Vision EfficientDynamics concept models. The other will be a lighter, better, faster 135i. It seems likely the M1 badge will be reserved for the supercar option. That leaves us with the Tii nomenclature from the iconic 2002 as the current tip for naming the M-prepared 135 Coupé.

According to evo‘s report the baby-M will could pack a 300kW punch. It is also expected that, true to its Tii roots, the car will be shedding some weight—as much as 70kg from its current 1485kg figure. Add a 7-speed dual clutch transmission and tricky diff and you end up with an awe inspiring proposition. Whatever is going on inside BMW’s headquarters I hope it is along the lines of, let’s get this thing to market as quick as we can!

However, today’s news from Drive.com.au may also raise a few eyebrows. Apparently BMW Australia wants a (slightly) harder, better, fatser, stronger 135i as well. And it doesn’t want to hang around for the Fatherland to produce the goods. No, the Aussies want to prepare up to 50 enhanced 135is with a mild power increase, from 225kW to 240kW.

The extra power would come courtesy of a BMW Performance kit and BMW Australia would carry out the modifications locally, rather than importing them ready to run. BMW spokesman Toni Andreevski has confirmed Australia is already in discussions with Munich, and hopes to have a decision locked away on the manual only model inside three months.

New vehicle sales report – November 2009

FCAI banner

Big news in the car game last month with numbers increasing by a massive 20% on sales registered in November 2008. Following a more moderate sales boost in October, the FCAI is shouting from the roof tops that the worst of doom and gloom is over, “This is an extraordinary result that provides further evidence that the market and the broader Australian economy are showing signs of recovery,” FCAI Chief Executive Andrew McKellar said.

Although, McKellar does acknowledge his colleagues have been given a nice helping hand, “The exceptional November figures could not have been achieved without the Federal Government’s small business tax break,” he said.

Seems as though business buyers like SUVs and light commercial vehicles, with segment figures increasing by 44% and 39% respectively. Overall new vehicle sales for 2009 tally 848,620. Despite the good news from the last two months, this figure is still 9.3% down on 2008 sales.

Nothing new to report in market leaders, so that means the top three sellers are Toyota, Holden and Ford.

More after the break.

What would you say to a front-wheel drive BMW?

BMW 135i

Speculation about the possibilities of a front-wheel drive BMW have been circulating for a while now. That theory is only set to grow according to a report in Autocar that quotes a BMW source as saying the company could “break with tradition”.

BMW and PSA Peugeot Citroën are in discussions about devleoping future joint ventures. Currently the two parties share the four cylinder engines found in MINIs and Peugeots. And the German-French alliance is also working on a modular front-wheel drive platform which would be shared among various MINI, Citroen and Peugeot models.

But it is the admission from a BMW insider that a future 1 Series could also use this front-wheel drive platform that will rattle a few cages, “Nothing is concrete at this stage but discussions are on-going about whether or not BMW should break with the tradition of rear and four-wheel-drive cars.

“For many in this company it is a taboo subject. But we have to be realistic with the targets we have set ourselves for fuel consumption and emissions, and they clearly favour a front-wheel-drive solution for 2018.”

On the one hand many 1 Series buyers may not know, or care, if their car is driven by the front wheels. On the other hand, though, it would mark a massive shift in philosophy for BMW who heavily marketed the 1 Series rear wheel drive benefits when it was first launched.

The prospective timeframe is still quite a long way off, and if it did come to fruition it appears there would be plenty of time for BMW to soften their stance on FWD platforms. But, what do you think, would a front wheel drive BMW appeal to you, or is the mere thought something you cannot contemplate?

Revamped Sauber team not on F1’s latest 2010 entry list

BMW Sauber F1.09

As ever Formula One is playing with the hearts and minds of its competitors. Last Friday BMW agreed to sell the remnants of its team back to former owner Peter Sauber. An interesting Q&A piece with the 66-year-old entrepreneur discussing the deal can be read on the Formula1.com website.

In that article Sauber mentions development of their car for 2010 season is well under way. This is largely thanks to Ferrari who will be supplying engines to the reformed team. That’s the good news.

The not so good news comes from the FIA—overnight the FIA released it’s 2010 entry list. There are only 12 teams on that list and Sauber is not one of them.

A major condition of BMW’s sale is that the deal can only be finalised if a new Sauber team is granted a starting place on the 2010 grid. A sticking point in this outcome is the fact that 13 teams had already signed a Concorde Agreement with the FIA for the 2010 season. Of course, neither Sauber or BMW are one of those signatories. However, Toyota is. Given they have since withdrawn from the sport one would assume that Sauber could fill the void, so to speak.

Indeed, this possibility is spoken of with confidence by Peter Sauber in his interview mentioned above. Sauber explained, “The FIA had already promised us the 14th slot on the grid. Under that circumstance it would have been our obligation to persuade the one team [Williams] that had voted against us to accept our entry.”

More news on this story as it comes to hand. BMW’s press release on the sale back to Sauber can be read below.

If you tolerate this then your children will be next

You may remember the earlier news that saw the worldwide BMW Z4 ‘art of driving’ television commercial pulled from Australian screens. I stated at the time that, as a sign of protest against this ludicrous decision, AUSmotive will be running the above footage, which is featured in the commercial, on the first day of every month for the rest of the year.

The fact that regulations are in place that deem this ad inappropriate is a sad indictment on the state of the road safety debate in this country. The fact that some members of society are unable separate entertainment from reality is equally disturbing. That they are given a voice is mind boggling.

Clearly, the title of this article is tongue in cheek and is designed to highlight the level of paranoia that exists in wowsers when presented with the notion that driving can be fun.

A reminder, too, that you can watch the ad in full on the BMW Australia website. Even better, check out BMW’s Expression of Joy Z4 microsite.

Being December this marks the end of my mini protest. Further heightening my discontent on this issue is the ad after the break for a flavoured milk that is, apparently, deemed acceptable for the simple fact that it is not advertising a car. Taking a churlish logical step, then, if you ever feel like burning some rubber on a public road, or breaking any road rules for that matter, just keep an Ice Break in your cup holder for immunity on all driving charges.*

Golden years

DTM - Golden years

It’s been a bit of YouTube week so far on AUSmotive, so I may as well continue this trend with another clip of awesomeness. This time from the DTM series with footage from around 20 years ago. Cheesy pop, again, is the order of the day, but you can’t deny the classic motorsport action. It is first rate.

If you enjoy racing when it goes wrong, then keep an eye out at 1:20, 3:28 and 4:45 in the clip after the jump.

BMW returns to product placement

You may remember BMW trying to flog their Z3 and Z8 roadsters with the help of one Mr James Bond. Since then, though, the Munich company has been far less high profile at pushing their products through entertainment media, such as Hollywood films. Even The Italian Job, featuring MINI, the then new jewel of the BMW Group, was over six years ago.

But, this is all about to change. BMW have just entered a partnership with Propaganda GEM, a specialist media company that helps its clients push its wares while we’re supposed to be sidetracked by a movie, or something. They look after such names as Audi, Bang & Olufsen, Bvlgari, Casio, Lamborghini, Nokia and Panasonic. Although, Propaganda GEM’s 13 year relationship with Audi will be coming to an end, to make way for BMW. Presumably Lambo will be dropped, as well.

Along with the usual advertainment of specific product lines, this new deal will see BMW pushing themes. Expect lines such as “the joy of driving” or “EfficientDynamics” to be espoused by Hollywood’s A-list, among others.

Ralf Hussmann, head of sport marketing and corporate sponsorships for BMW, says “We are definitely looking forward to lift product placement to the next level. We are a car manufacturer but we have different topics to talk about.”

It would appear, then, that BMW’s old F1 budget has been siphoned away from good to be spent on evil! Well, that’s what I think anyway. How about you, would you rather BMW stayed in Formula One, or are they better ramping up this product placement gig?

2010 BMW 5 Series photo gallery

BMW 5 Series sedan

BMW released their all new 5 Series sedan in Munich this morning. First impressions? Not as cutting edge as the previous model. From a design point of view, it’s definitely a bit safer.

There are clear styling cues from within the BMW family, as you would expect. There’s some 7 Series flavour up front with lashings of 3 Series at the back. That sounds like it might be a bit of a mish mash, but the overall styling works quite well. Although, they stopped the penis extension bonnet just in time. Any bigger and, well, yeah. However, there’s no doubting the new F10 5er will kick lots of goals with its intended audience. I’m just disappointed they turned up the conservative dial a bit. The previous 5 Series, for me, got it just right in terms of pushing design boundaries while not alienating its market.

The car will go on sale in Europe after the Geneva Auto Salon (March 2010), with Australian deliveries commencing, not long after, in the middle of next year.

Of course this new model reveal brings with it a new round of technology, engines, safety gizmos and other things you never knew you needed in a car. Internet access for back seat passengers anyone?

European customers will have access to a full complement of engine choices. Ranging from a 135kW turbo diesel four cylinder (520d) through to a 300kW twin turbo V8 (550i). I can’t imagine a four cylinder 5 Series will find its way to Australian shores.

BMW’s lab coat wearers and marketers have teamed together to create a massive vocabulary of techno terms. Looks like dynamic is the current buzzword in the halls of Munich—the new 5 features Dynamic Driving Control, Dynamic Damper Control and Dynamic Drive stability control, all under BMW’s EfficientDynamics umbrella.

When you’re done with all things dynamic, you can still play with Adaptive Drive, Brake Energy Regeneration, ConnectedDrive, Parking Assistant, Surround View, Lane Change Warning, Lane Departure Warning, Speed Limit Info, Head-Up Display and BMW Night Vision. Quite a mouthful.

Plenty of pics, press blurb and a video, too, can be seen after the jump. A reminder that all pictures can be accessed in high-resolution wallpaper friendly sizing by simply clicking on each image. If you want more in depth coverage of the new F10 5 Series, then take a squiz at BimmerFile.

Blast from the past

BMW 3/15

Fifteen horsepower in a car is hardly anything to get excited about, even if it only has 550kg to lug around. But these were the keys stats of BMW’s first car, the 3/15. If it looks familiar to our British readers, that’s because, essentially, the car was an Austin 7.

After the jump you can see a short clip from BMW’s YouTube channel, which gives a bit more history on the “Dixi”. To be fair, the clip is a bit slow moving, but I did get a bit of a kick out of the footage showing a 3/15 blasting up the Stelvio Pass. A classic driving road, to be sure, but perhaps a car with such modest performance capabilities is not the first that would come to mind if one could pick any from history to tackle the classic climbing route.
