Get ready for an Audi Q3 S v BMW X1 M rumble

Audi Q3

German publication Auto Motor und Sport is telling the world Audi has signed off on an ‘S’ version of its small Q3 SUV. But instead of being powered by a 2.0 litre turbo like the S3, they reckon the Q3 S will get the 2.5 litre five cylinder TT RS engine. Although, it is expected to lose around 40PS from the RS spec, with peak power down to 300PS for the hot Q3.

With expectations already that BMW will stick an ‘M’ badge on the X1 we will have a nice little fight on our hands to see who’s SUV has the biggest, ahem. It’s been suggested the X1 M will steal the 1M engine and manage to lose some power in the process; 320PS is the number being spoken.

So, what do we think out there in the real world, isolated from slick marketing presentations; ‘S’ and ‘M’ badges on entry level SUVs. Too far?

Before ordering your BMW M5 read this brochure

BMW M5 brochure

If you think the F10 BMW M5 is something you’d like to see in your garage, then use the presence of inner strength to download this brochure (3.2mb PDF) and peruse all the options. You’ll soon learn this executive saloon speaks the language of a sports car—fluently.

Although not English, apparently, as the following statement attests: ‘Always a compelling argument—pulling power’. Which is closely followed by: ‘The hard facts’. Lucky the car is sure to speak a language we all understand: horsepower!

BMW 1M tries its hand as a helicopter

BMW Canada is back with more visual trickery to promote the 1 Series M Coupé. First it was powder puff concrete walls, this time it’s the world’s highest helipad. Looks like fun, don’t you think.

Is the BMW M5 really the fastest production sedan to lap the Nürburgring?

BMW M5

The interwebs brings word that the new F10 BMW M5 has set what is being claimed as a new lap record at the Nürburgring for a production model four-door sedan. The time has been set, apparently, by a BMW test driver. The time being bandied about is 7 minutes 55 seconds.

That’s pretty quick, but it’s actually no quicker than the time claimed by Subaru; former world rally champ Tommi Mäkinen posted a 7:55 lap at the wheel of a WRX STI sedan around this time last year.

Let’s put that aside for a moment, then, and compare the F10 M5 against its older brothers:

  • F10 M5 7:55 (claimed)
  • E60 M5 8:13 (Sport Auto time)
  • E39 M5 8:28 (Sport Auto time)

Steady improvements there for each new generation. Either way, we’re certain the new M5 will be up to Ring-Taxi duties when it returns in 2012.

BMW reveals limited edition M3 CRT

BMW M3 CRT

BMW has lifted the lid on its latest M3 iteration. Limited to just 67 models worldwide the M3 CRT (Carbon Racing Technology) features a 4.4 litre V8 producing 331kW (450hp) and 440Nm. That’s an extra 0.4 litres of capacity, 22kW and 40Nm over the standard model. Think of the CRT as a more practical every day M3 GTS.

The use of CFRP and a lightweight titanium exhaust has allowed BMW to shed 70kg from the weight of an M3 Sedan, bringing the CRT to a more lithe 1580kg. The car’s overall power to weight ratio is 3.5kg/hp.

Fitted with 19″ alloys and using the car’s 7-speed dual clutch transmission the CRT can reach 100km/h in 4.4 seconds (0.5s faster than standard).

More from BMW after the break.

VIDEO: Yet another BMW 1M review

Seems we can’t go more than a few days without posting something to do with the BMW 1 Series M Coupé. This new review, from US-based Automobile magazine, is pretty good value. It pays out on some M3 buyers while showing the excellent hooning abilities of the mighty 1M (on a closed track, of course). It’s certainly a rare moment where anyone from the US becomes fanatical about preferring a manual transmission over an auto. In between there’s a few staid moments telling you all you need to know about why the 1M is so good. Enjoy!

M5 watch: Is that the best you can do?

BMW has followed up the official release of its new 412kW F10 M5 with this video teaser. Filmed at the Ascari Circuit in Spain we find the clip somewhat disappointing. It’s produced very well, perhaps even slightly over-produced, but we still want more action, more speed and more noise.

Sport Auto laps the BMW 1M around the Ring

BMW 1M Coupe

The BMW 1 Series M Coupé is the darling of the moment, attracting headlines around the world. After our own test drive we can see why. So, it’s little surprise there is great interest in how fast the 1M is around the famed Nürburgring Nordschleife. Thanks to authoritative German mag Sport Auto and its latest Supertest with noted driver Horst von Saurma we now have an answer.

That answer is 8 minutes 15 seconds.

On the unofficial Nürburgring lap chart that places the 1M in some heady company. Here’s a shortlist of relevant cars also tested by Horst von Saurma:

  • 8:05 – BMW E92 M3 (DCT)
  • 8:09 – Audi TT RS
  • 8:15 – BMW 1M Coupé
  • 8:17 – Porsche Cayman S
  • 8:20 – Audi RS 3

Von Saurma thinks the 1M would be faster if its suspension setup was better tuned for the Ring. Interestingly he also says the suspension is too hard for daily use.

BMW Australia hopes to double 1M allocation

BMW 1M Coupe

First filed 9 June.

Car Advice brings some ripping news for fans of the BMW 1M Coupé. Like most markets, BMW Australia has been receiving high demand for the 1M and they have been working hard to secure more cars from the fatherland.

Piers Scott, BMW Australia representative told Car Advice, “BMW in Munich has been under constant pressure since we announced the car for the Australian market, and we’re confident that we’ll be able to offer more cars to our dealers, but we just need the green light from head office.”

While a final number has not been agreed, it’s hoped the new allocation could see as many as 200 1M Coupé find their way to Australia.

An official number wasn’t given when BMW Australia confirmed pricing for the $99,900 1M, but they did say it would be limited to “around 100 units”. Word on the street says those 100 cars have already been snapped up, so a potential doubling of the allocation is great news for those who may be on a waiting list hoping for cancelled orders.

Drive Thru: BMW 1 Series M Coupé

BMW 1M

Regular readers will know Australian deliveries of the BMW 1 Series M Coupé have been taking place over the past week or two. One has even ended up in our hometown of Canberra. AUSmotive was lucky enough to be offered a brief drive thanks to owners John and Dianne.

First impressions? It’s a great looking car. You really do just want to get in and drive the thing as soon as you see it.

You either love or hate the design of the 1 Series range; there are rarely any middling opinions. We’ve always admired the way the 1 Series Coupé looks and with M division offering unique styling cues, like those almost comically beefed up guards and an aggressive body kit, we think the 1M has reached a new peak.

The special order black wheels on John and Dianne’s car look superb as well. They complement the already gutsy presence the 1M has from factory.
