BMW Australia: No oil pump recall for F10 M5

BMW M5

Last month we read about an official recall in the United States for BMW M5 and M6 models affected by an oil pump issue. Details of the problem were outlined in an internal BMW US document, which has been published by BimmerPost. Here’s the first few paragraphs:

Q1. Which models are affected by this Recall?
Affected are certain Model Year 2013 BMW M5, M6 Coupe, and M6 Convertible vehicles produced between July 2012 and September 2012.

Q2. What is the specific problem?
The issue involves the engine oil pump. The pump driveshaft can separate from the pump rotor. If this were to occur, the engine could experience a sudden loss of oil pressure which could cause severe engine damage.

Q3. Why are other models not affected?
It has been determined that only certain vehicles produced between July 2012 and September 2012 were equipped with an incorrectly manufactured oil pump.

Q4. How many vehicles are affected?
Approximately 696 vehicles in the US are potentially affected.

We contacted BMW Australia to see if any locally delivered models are, or would be, affected. This is the reply we were given by Piers Scott, Head of Corporate Communications, BMW Australia:

“20 Australian cars are affected but they are all still either en route or yet to be delivered. So the fix will be conducted whilst still in our care and not one Australian customer will be affected.”

So, there you go, if you’re about to buy or take delivery of your very own F10M you can rest assured that you won’t be affected by this issue.

BMW Concept Active Tourer

We’ve got some good videos from Paris here, showing the BMW Concept Active Tourer. When viewing the first clip see if you can hear Ian Robertson, BMW’s head of sales and marketing, say the words “front-wheel drive”. The last clip features Marc Girard, BMW’s interiors boss, talking about the technology found inside the Active Tourer and is well worth watching.

VIDEO: BMW DTM driver takes wife for a drive

BMW DTM driver Augusto Farfus and wife Liri at the Nurburgring

BMW DTM driver Augusto Farfus recently took his wife, Liri, for a drive around the Nürburgring Nordschleife in a company M3. For our amusement BMW fitted the car with a few cameras to make sure we didn’t miss any of the action.

2012 German Auto Display in Canberra

2012 German Auto Display, Canberra

On a nice sunny day in the nation’s capital the Treasury car park hosted the annual Shannons German Auto Display (formerly Autofest). Normally we’d be involved in the thick of it here at AUSmotive, but other events have conspired against us. In the end it turned out to be good day to check out the camera on our new iPhone 5. We hope you enjoy the pics.

BMW M Performance accessories previewed

BMW M Performance accessories

In their Paris Motor Show preview BMW advised they’ll be making a stack of new M Performance accessories available. There’s no firm details just yet, but they will include, for the first time, new retrofit add-ons for the F30 3 Series saloon. Similar accessories will follow for the F31 3 Series Touring and 1 Series three door shortly thereafter.

Some M Performance accessories are only for show, namely the very nice looking alcantara and carbon fibre dash inserts. While more credible items such as uprated suspension and improvements in engine performance can also be had.

The M Performance bodykits can also help set your Bimmer apart from the crowd. No word on pricing yet, but hey, your playing with official aftermarket BMW bits, so get ready to empty your pockets!

M3 watch: Under the bonnet son

2014 BMW F80 M3 inline six cylinder turbo

BimmerPost takes us underneath the bonnet of the F80 M3 for our first look at the new inline six cylinder set to power BMW’s most revered M model.

We still don’t know how many turbos will be bolted on to the engine, but looking at the two pipes coming from the intercooler it looks like there’ll be at least two. Perhaps that’s the best visual indication we’ll get, too, as the rumour of a third turbo suggests it will be electrically powered and may be housed well out of view.

That’s some pretty serious strut bracing too!

Best predictions so far say the engine will provide punters 450hp (335kW) to play with. Of course, the same six cylinder engine will find its way into the M4 coupé, which is codenamed F82 for the trainspotters among us.

BMW Concept Active Tourer revealed

BMW Concept Active Tourer

Released on Friday the BMW Concept Active Tourer represents your first look at a bona fide front-wheel drive model from the Munich giants. It’s also been referred to as the 1 Series GT.

We’re big fans of the look too. We’re not sure if its simply because we think it rights most of the wrongs seen on the rear-wheel drive F20 1 Series, but the stylish front end reaches a standard that is matched by the rest of the car. If only some of the styling cues were present on the rear-wheel drive model.

In concept form, the Active Tourer is driven by a petrol powered 1.5 litre three cylinder turbo at the front wheels, with electric power at the rear axle. Total power provided by the Plug-in Electric Hybrid Vehicle (PHEV) is 140kW. Although, for now, BMW is not going into more detail, so we don’t know the peak numbers offered by the three cylinder powerplant.

That three-pot engine is about to spark life in a number of BMW Group models, including the next-gen MINI. A prototype 1 Series with the 1.5 litre three cylinder has been tested by Autocar and they were impressed by its perky performance, saying “there is little hint of lag, just a lovely linear flow of power.”

When driven in electric-only mode BMW is predicting a range of 30km and the lithium-ion battery can be recharged using a regular domestic socket.

The showcar really ups the ante inside with trick multi-colour displays for both front and rear seat passengers. The “Cool Shade” panorama roof with Suspended Particle Device is also pretty flash.

With obvious front-wheel drive competition from fierce rivals such as Audi and Mercedes-Benz we’re reluctantly impressed by what we’re seeing from BMW’s new world order. Once the transformation from concept to road-going production model is complete, it will be very interesting to see what BMW’s first front-wheel drive model is like to drive.

Here’s hoping it’s as good as it looks.

Here, have a sneak peek at the BMW 1 Series GT

BMW 1 Series GT

You’re looking at BMW’s first ever front-wheel drive model, the 1 Series Active Concept Tourer. For reasons of convenience we’ll refer to it as the 1 Series GT, although it is also known as the ‘Compactive Tourer’. We’re expecting a full reveal online in the next 24 hours now(!), before making its public debut in Paris.

The image above was leaked by Auto Bild on the cover of their latest magazine and the chaps at BimmerPost have removed the surrounding text and images to leave us with a clean look at the new model. On first viewing, we have to say the 1 Series GT looks pretty smart too. Certainly a bit sharper than its comparatively dopey looking rear-wheel drive sibling.

Interestingly there’s talk the next-generation 1 Series will only be a front-wheel drive model. Of more current day relevance the UKL platform used here will also underpin the new F56 MINI. The front-wheel drive 1 Series and the next-gen MINI will share several components.

UPDATE: BMW has since released official pics and info for the Concept Active Tourer (ie. 1 Series GT).

Gone in 60 seconds?

BMW 1 Series M Coupe

A rather troubling security failure affecting BMWs, among other manufacturers, has been featured on the BBC’s Watchdog television program in the UK.

Simply, car thieves in the UK have been sourcing blank key fobs then breaking into cars, accessing the OBD-II ports, reprogramming the blank keys with a third party OBD-II reader and driving away with no impediment from the car’s onboard security systems.

Reports from a few months back suggest as many as 300 BMWs in the UK have been stolen using this method. Indeed, you can see a video after the break showing a BMW 1M being stolen after thieves carefully broke the car’s window, avoiding the alarm’s movement sensor, and quietly pushing the car away, before driving off, around three minutes after gaining access.

BMW’s response to the BBC hasn’t really inspired much confidence:

“There is no specific BMW security issue here. We, like our customers and those of other manufacturers, are victims of this new high-tech organised crime.

“All our cars meet all security standards and regulations, but as responsible manufacturers we are looking at ways of mitigating against this new kind of attack.”

Virtually all models of BMW can be stolen this way, however BMW UK points out that recent upgrades should put an end to the security weakness:

“None of our latest models—new 3 Series, 5 Series, 6 Series and 7 Series—nor any other BMW built after September 2011 can be stolen using the method highlighted.”

We’re not sure if any Australian delivered cars have been stolen using this technique, but we’d certainly recommend contacting your dealer to see if your car is vulnerable to such thefts.

M3 watch: Snap, crackle and pop!

BMW F80 M3 prototype spied testing

The Nürburgring-based based blog Bridge to Gantry brings us some new footage of the F80 M3 being tested on the Nordschleife. As the car exits the Karussell you can hear the trick gearbox doing its thing. However, as the new M3 drives further away you can also hear the turbocharged inline six cylinder hard at work.

We’ve said it before, but we’re still waiting for the exhaust engineers to get busy.
