Wraps almost off on BMW’s 4 Series coupé

2013 BMW F32 4 Series spied

F30post has an awesome set of images showcasing a production-ready BMW 4 Series. Already, even in base model trim, the new F32 coupé looks very smart. It only heightens the anticipation for the M3 version, which will be badged as the M4 for the first time.

With its camouflage covering only front and rear body details it’s the best look yet of the new 4 Series. So far we quite like the vented guard, and we’re pleased to note that it looks as though it’s a functional vent and not just a glued on visual enhancement.

It’s understood the F32 4 Series will start to roll down the production line from July next year, with the F33 convertible to follow a few month later in November 2013. A concept model of the 4 Series will most likely be shown at the Detroit Auto Show next January.

Look, it lights up like a Christmas tree!

BMW M Performance steering wheel

BMW has produced this video to show off its M Performance steering wheel. The small display at the top of the wheel can scroll through a number of settings, including a quarter mile drag function.

On the one had we think this wheel is pretty damn cool. But on the other, well, you’d look like a bit of a knob having one of these in your 3 Series saloon, don’t you think!

Don’t try this in Australia

BMW M135i autobahn

After impressing the European motoring hacks, the BMW M135i has just hit Australian shores. If you’ve just picked one up, or hope to have a closer look before buying, we suggest you don’t try this on local roads. But it would be fun wouldn’t it!

From the YouTube clip we have for you below the M135i, with 8 speed auto, returns the following results:

  • 0–100km/h: 5 seconds
  • 0–150km/h: 9 seconds
  • 0–200km/h: 16 seconds
  • 0–250km/h: 27 seconds
  • Standing kilometre: 23 seconds

These numbers won’t be completely accurate, of course, but as a rough guide, we’re impressed!

Infographic: James Bond’s car history

James Bond's Aston Martin DB5 as featured in Skyfall

As we near the global premiere of the latest James Bond flick, Skyfall, it’s quite timely that clever clogs Evans Halshaw has come up trumps with this infographic capturing the history of Bond’s garage in one easy to see location.

Thanks must go to Evans as well for encouraging the embedding of the graphic, which you can see in long form after the break. We also recommend checking out Halshaw’s website for the interactive version.

As you can see, it’s not all been expensive Aston Martins for 007.

BMW triple crown caps off dream DTM return

Bruno Spengler and BMW, 2012 DTM champions

Canadian driver Bruno Spengler has capped off a thrilling season climax in Hockenheim to win the final race of the 2012 DTM season. In doing so he not only clinched the drivers’ championship for himself, but also did his bit in securing the manufacturers’ title for BMW.

Adding further to BMW’s successful return to touring car racing Spengler’s four wins from the 10 race calendar played a pivotal role in helping BMW Team Schnitzer to win the teams’ trophy.

Highlighting the close-fought nature of the DTM category BMW entered the final round in third place in the manufacturers’ standings. Meanwhile, Spengler was behind Mercedes driver Gary Paffett, who finished second in Hockenheim. Alas for Paffett, second was also where he finished on the final season tally, just four points adrift of Spengler.

2012 DTM season at a glance:

  • BMW: 5 wins (Spengler 4, Farfus)
  • Mercedes: 3 wins (Paffett 2, Green)
  • Audi: 2 wins (Mortara 2)

Audi RS3 v BMW M135i: Chris Harris decides

Chris Harris reviews the BMW M135i and Audi RS3

Chris Harris has chimed in to deliver his verdict on a classic Audi v BMW battle. The cars in question are the, now old-generation, RS3 and the new kid on the block, the M135i.

Let’s be honest here, you have probably already guessed at Harris’ verdict before even watching the clip, so…

We’re not sure if his thoughts on the RS3 are following the because Audi understeer, blah, blah crowd or if he’s convinced us the M135i is good enough to look beyond its deeply flawed looks.

Watch and enjoy.

M3 watch: Less weight please

F80 BMW M3 rendering

Last week new details for the upcoming BMW M3 emerged predicting the F80 model could be up to 140kg less than the E92 model it replaces. Turns out BMW has gone back to the future by using the kerb weight of the two-generations-ago E46 as its target. So expect the F80 to weigh in somewhere around 1550kg, depending on options.

The F82 M4 coupé is also expected to benefit from a similar weight loss program.

Speculation on power from the new inline turbo six says not to hope for too much more than the 309kW found in the 4.0 litre V8 from the E92. Although, we’ve previously passed on reports suggesting 335kW as the magic number. What you can probably hope for, thanks to being force fed, is a much healthier peak torque figure. The rather impressive number of an extra 135Nm has been mooted.

Key stats of up to 335kW for peak power and 535Nm of torque; how does that grab you? Even better, you’ll even be able to get the next M3/M4 with a proper bloody gearbox!

2014 BMW M4 back at the Ring

2014 BMW M4 coupe

The 2014 BMW M4 coupé has been spied in action at the latest industry pool testing held at the Nürburgring. It’s just the second time the coupé has been spotted and aside from the new pics and video (below) there’s not much else to tell you. Inasmuch as there’s no new info relating to the F82 that we haven’t already told you.

So, that means you should be expecting the F80 M3 sedan to be released late next year or early 2014, with the M4 to follow before the end of 2014. Power will come from an inline six cylinder with at least two turbos; there may be three.

Of course, the new M3/M4 will be a little bit lighter, a little bit faster and a little bit more efficient than the models they replace.

VIDEO: Tesla S v BMW M5

Tesla S v BMW M5

Here we bring you an almost pointless video from Automobile magazine who have lined up a Tesla S and BMW M5 for a drag. But it’s a bit of harmless fun and on paper both manufacturers claim 4.4 seconds are required to reach 100km/h. So let’s see that theory put to practice. Which car do you think will win a straight out drag?

Although, regardless of this result, we think it would be more fun to drive both cars hard around a track or mountain road and see which one runs out of juice first. The Tesla S, with its predicted 480km range (when driven at 90km/h), or the M5 and its 80 litre fuel tank. Bit of a no brainer, perhaps?

2012 Paris Motor Show in pictures – part 1

2012 Paris Motor Show

The 2012 Paris Motor Show is well underway and for those of us who can’t make it we’ve assembled a photo gallery, which highlights what a blue collar show this has turned out to be. There’s no real theme of haute coutoure motoring here. It’s mostly off the rack bread and butter models.

Thankfully, the Jaguar F-Type brings some style and class. Conversely, when you stop and think about it, someone must have actually signed off an be responsible for the Honda CR-V. They should be fired. It is just horrible.

After the break you’ll see manufacturers listed alphabetically from A–L. Stay tuned for part 2 from Paris soon.
