Third-generation BMW X5 revealed

BMW X5

BMW recently announced details for their third-gen X5 SUV, codenamed F15. It’s a reasonably straightforward evolutionary step as far as the looks go, although there are a few areas of concern.

You can see elements of the F30 3 Series at the front, with the way the headlights link to the kidney grille. And that grille is pretty damn big too, much larger than the E70 model it replaces. It looks a bit odd now, but over time it will make sense.

However, the side profile raises our eyebrows. Specifically at rear window and its Hofmeister kink. To us this is poorly resolved and looks a bit too much like the awkward Honda CRV, which is a tad unfortunate.

At launch the new X5 can be had with a 330kW/650Nm 4.4 litre V8 (xDrive50i), a 190kW/560Nm 3.0 litre diesel (xDrive30d) or the M Performance model with 280kW/740Nm 3.0 litre diesel (M50d).

As is BMW’s wont these days all engines carry the TwinPower Turbo tag on account of their forced induction. Although, it’s only the xDrive50i that has a twin turbo setup, the xDrive30D uses a single turbo and the M50d has three.

More engine options will be added to the range in December. Full details of the new X5 can be read below.

BMW Pininfarina Gran Lusso Coupé revealed

BMW Pininfarina Gran Lusso Coupe

Want a new BMW 8 Series? Then this Pininfarina Gran Lusso Coupé will make you smile. Indeed, we’re pretty sure you’ll smile from almost angle—it is a beautiful thing—so long as you don’t look too long at the huge kidney grille from front on.

The Gran Lusso is a one-off joint project between BMW Design and noted Italian design house Pininfarina. “The appeal of this collaboration with Pininfarina is that you get another, very different and special angle on facets like luxury and exclusivity,” notes Karim Habib, Head of BMW Design.

“The Italian company, after all, has always been a byword for these criteria in particular, demonstrating time and again its keen sensitivity and exceptional finesse in these areas.”

Being a true concept vehicle there’s not a lot of technical detail and all we can tell you is that it’s powered by a V12 engine. But that’s it, pretty much. Although you’d expect the engine to be based on the 6.0 litre V12 found in the 760i.

Technically speaking if this concept did materialise into a production-ready 8 Series there’d need to be some extra work. Visually, though, not a lot would need to change. And so long as they rework that front grille we think that would be a very good thing.

2013 Nürburgring 24 hour race in pictures

Porsche at the 2013 Nurburgring 24 hour race

If you didn’t follow the 2013 Nürburgring 24 hour race over at AUSringers on Monday here’s your chance to catch up, pictorially at least. After the break you’ll find a huge gallery of photos with thanks to Aston Martin, Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche.

In the end, thanks to heavy rain and fog during the night session the race was red flagged. Around nine hours were lost in total, and while that was a shame, the race still provided all the drama and excitement you would expect from a 24 hour race around the Green Hell.

For the record the #9 Black Falcon Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 won the race. At the wheel was Bernd Schneider, Jeroen Bleekemolen, Sean Edwards and Nicki Thiim. Amazingly it was the first ever Nürburgring 24 hour race win for Mercedes-Benz and Bernd Schneider. Indeed, after several attempts it was the first time that Schneider had finished the race.

BMW M5 sets world record for longest sustained drift

BMW M5 drift world record

A BMW M5 driven by Johan Schwartz has set a new world record for the longest sustained drift. A couple of years back Mercedes once held this record with a paltry distance of just under 3km. Schwartz has upped the ante to a staggering 82.5km (51.278 miles)!

The record was set at the BMW Peformance Centre in South Carolina and raised $20,000 in donations for BMW’s Charity Pro-Am golf tournament.

Schwartz bettered the previous best mark of 76.8km (47.71 miles) set in Abu Dhabi earlier this year. Video of the loooooooongest drift can be seen after the break.

BMW presents undisguised M235i as peace offering

BMw M235i spied

To all those who have rushed out and bought a BMW M135i, our hearts go out to you. We’re sorry. To BMW, however, we’re thankful. We think it’s wonderful they have acknowledged their sins and offered this very stylish looking—and you don’t know how relieved we are to say that—M Performance 2 Series for its penance.

This is, we’re told, an undisguised F22 M235i, sure it will cost a bit more than the M135i, but what price does one put on one’s own dignity? If nothing else the pleasingly restyled front end may make its way onto future 1 Series models for those buyers who like some spice with their hatchbacks.

Other giveaways that this is the M235i include the gaping front air intakes, the silver wing mirrors, M brakes and M badge on the side fender.

Bimmerpost has the scoop on the pics, so follow the link below for more.

BMW M235i to launch facial reconstruction

BMW M235i rendering

With the global success of the M135i you’d reckon BMW’s brief for the 2 Series version would be simple: Take the designers of the 1 Series out the back and give them a good flogging and send the engineers to the pub for some celebratory drinks. And it could just be that that is precisely the approach taken by BMW, if this rendering is anything to go by.

If the M235i does indeed end up looking something like the image above we expect BMW will do well to meet demand. It won’t be the prettiest coupé BMW has ever made, but what we see above is miles ahead of the M135i, regardless of how talented the 1 Series M-lite may be.

We just have to trust BMW that none of the engineering greatness of the M135i is lost by chopping off the rear doors and losing some cargo space. There’s no reason to even suggest for a moment that BMW will stuff that up.

After the break you can see a few spy shots and a video of the M235i in action at the Nürburgring, of course.

VIDEO: Max Reisböck, you rock!

Max Reisbock and the BMW 3 Series Touring

This is Max Reisböck. He’s a former BMW engineer and he created the first ever BMW station wagon, based on a wrecked E30 3 Series saloon. The reason for his handiwork? So he could take his daughter’s tricycle on family holidays.

It’s actually a very cool story and without it we may never have seen the 3 Series Touring. Thankfully, BMW has seen fit to document Max’s story with this short video.

We love Euro estate cars because they’re super-cool. And now we love Max Reisböck, because he’s cool too.

BMW i8 seen charging round the ‘Ring

BMW i8 prototype

Almost four years after the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics first showed its face the i8 production model is nearing completion. The petrol-electric hybrid has been spied charging its way around the Nürburgring.

Based on the info from the i8 Concept we can expect it to boast a total of 260kW/550Nm from its hybrid drivetrain. Enough to propel the i8 to 100km/h in around 4.6 seconds. Separating the power individually, a 1.5 litre three cylinder petrol engine drives the rear wheels and produces 164kW/300Nm. The front wheels are powered by the 96kW/250Nm electric motor, which can achieve a 100% recharge in less than two hours. In all-electric mode the i8 has a 35km range.

An exact launch date for the i8 is unknown, but speculation suggests it will be on display at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

Official: BMW Concept X4 revealed

BMW Concept X4

BMW has reacted quickly to this morning’s leak and published official images of its Concept X4 which will debut in Shanghai later this month. So now you can admire the Sports Activity Coupé you secretly love in 2000px goodness.

There’s no real technical detail in the press release, which is no doubt being saved for its show debut. Talking about the Concept X4’s exterior though BMW says it has a “muscular silhouette” and we tend to agree. We like it.

BMW X4 concept leaked: looks quite good!

BMW X4 concept

You’re looking at the BMW X4 concept, which has been leaked ahead of Auto Shanghai (21–29 April). And, don’t tell anyone, but we think it looks quite nice.

Early last year BMW officially announced it would build the X4 at its Spartanburg plant in South Carolina. Last April a rendering emerged that made us question our preconceived idea that the X4 would be cabbage. Now this!

Five images showing the exterior of the X4 which is very well proportioned, certainly miles ahead of the cumbersome X6, and that front grille works much better than the standard 3 Series saloon. The double crease line along the side of the car works well, it fits in with BMW’s visual language, but speaks on it own as well.

Clearly, the X4 looks a lot better than the 3 Series GT. Of that, there is no doubt.

We are a little ashamed to admit it, but this X4 concept looks great! It’s practical, looks good and will drive very well. Really, what’s not to like?

UPDATE: Official images have now been released.
