What could possibly go wrong?

Audi A1 rolls in Brussels

A publicity stunt for the Audi A1 went a bit pear shaped in Brussels last week. The A1 was supposed to drive along the half-pipe, come to a stop and then continue on its merry way. An exercise to highlight the nimble handling of the A1, no doubt.

It’s no surprise that out of the high number of successful attempts that one—well, it didn’t go so well, as the pics above show. Audi have done a pretty good job of keeping the clip off YouTube for now, but if you find one make sure you post a link in the comments section below.

After the jump you can see a couple of examples of what was supposed to happen.

Audi S1 European pricing accidentally published

Audi S1 rendering

According to reports Audi Spain have inadvertently revealed European pricing for the upcoming Audi S1. This happened when a price list for the full A1 range was published and showed the S1 would have a starting price of €28,360 (approx AU$42,600).

This is interesting from an Australian perspective because the S1 would need to enter the market at around that price point. A $40K+ figure puts it firmly in Golf GTI territory. Although, such a figure would price the car roughly in line with the MINI Cooper S. The MINI John Cooper Works is in the $50K+ price bracket, and can be taken well north of that depending on the number of options chosen.

At this stage there doesn’t appear to be any further news from last week’s info that came wrapped in Polo R packaging.

That means we’re expecting the S1 to be driven by its front-wheels only. It will have a 136kW 1.4 litre twincharged engine and will only be available with a 6 speed S tronic transmission. Apparently space constraints prohibit the fitment of a conventional manual box.

Volkswagen says, “No Polo R for you!”

No Polo R for you

Just last week motorauthority.com brought us this Polo R rendering. It looks great, too. Speculation of a new hot Polo from R GmbH had been building for some time. However, according to a new report plans for a Polo R have been shelved, if they ever existed.

Talk of a 160kW Polo R certainly sounded enticing. However, Dr Ernst Linder, Polo’s technical boss, poured cold water over that idea, “I would say there have been some ideas about, but more in the press than the company itself because we have our GTI and within our company Audi has an S1.”

Linder also reckons 160kW is unlikely from the 1.4-litre twincharged engine that he says will power the Audi S1, “I think with the 136kW in the Audi S1 I think the engine is reaching the borderline. I think you could get some more out of it but I don’t think anymore than 10 or 20kW.”

Hmm, so Linder has spilled the beans on the power output of the S1, at 136kW it’s a modest increase on the 132kW found in the Polo GTI. Has he told us anything else? Well, as it happens he might have. There has been a lot of guesswork in regards to the drivetrain for the S1. An Audi bestowed with an “S” badge must have quattro, right?

“If we put much more horsepower in the [Polo], we need something like four-wheel-drive. This is a technical feature that is very expensive,” said Linder. Sure, that’s not a definitive answer to the direction Audi will take, but it does tend to confirm the thoughts of those who say the S1 will be front-wheel drive only.

After all that Linder did deliver some good news for those who like a few more herbs to go with their Volkswagens. There will be a Jetta R, although he didn’t give anything away on that one. The next Jetta is still around 12 months away, so an R model could be even longer. Given the front-wheel drive Scirocco R and all-wheel drive Golf R use what is essentially the same EA113 2.0 litre turbo it wouldn’t be a long stretch to expect the same engine to arrive in the Jetta R.

AUSmotive’s educated guess is the Jetta R would be powered by the front wheels only. The Scirocco R seems to handle this task with some degree of competence and a 4motion system would rob the Jetta R of valuable boot space.

The north loop

Nurburgring Nordschleife

The Nürburgring Nordschleife (or north loop) is one of the greatest stretches of tarmac in the world. Without doubt. As you know the Nürburgring 24 hour race was held last weekend and it has kept AUSmotive HQ busy posting articles for AUSringers.

So, to help share the love AUSmotive invites you on a YouTube lap of the Nordschleife after the break. The car is an Audi R8, the driver is experienced Nürburgring racer Willie Moore. It’s one of the better clips around as Willie gives some great advice while driving the circuit.

The video was posted by Kiwi Team Nürburgring. They’re a bunch of guys that make the trek to the Ring every year to compete in the 24 hour race. This year they piloted their two Honda Civic Type Rs to a one-two class win. Well done them!

Audi A1 learns about supply and demand

Audi A1

The next big thing, aka the Audi A1, is getting an early lesson in supply and demand. Production began in earnest this week and around 500 A1s are being built every day. That’s quite a lot for a new entry level premium product. Audi plans to build 50,000 cars before the end of 2010. That’s a lot too.

But it’s not enough. At least that’s the case according to Peter Schwarzenbauer, Audi’s head of sales and marketing. Speaking to Automotive News Europe, Herr Schwarzenbauer said, “In view of the high demand, orders could surpass the production capacity this year.”

That means hopeful A1 buyers may need to take a ticket and stand at the back of the queue. What will be pleasing to Audi’s top brass is around 90% of those interested in the A1 are first-time Audi buyers.

A1 production is set to increase to 80,000 in 2011 and to 100,000 in 2012. Will this alleviate supply concerns, or will the sales growth of the A1 continue to surpass expectations?

Audi A1 “motto vehicles” to debut at Wörthersee

Audi A1

Audi will be showcasing their Wörthersee Tour this weekend with seven customised A1 “motto vehicles”. The distinct models include Follow Me, FC Bayern, Competition Kit, Hot Rod, Fashion, Pickerljäger and Wasserwacht.

We got an insight into the Competition Kit motto vehicle back in March thanks to a YouTube clip from Audi tv. The customised vehicles are on show to promote the various ways A1 owners can individualise their cars through special paint schemes and adhesive films.

Images of all seven cars can be seen below, along with a detailed press release outlining Audi’s display at Wörthersee.

New vehicle sales report – April 2010

FCAI banner

New vehicle sales in Australia have continued strongly following the record result from last month. In total 81,401 vehicles were sold during April, the second highest recorded result for that month.

FCAI Chief Executive Andrew McKellar says official interest rate movements may hurt future sales in the short term, “It has to be expected that recent interest rate increases will have some dampening effect on demand over coming months. However, the industry is hopeful that interest rates must now be at a level where further increases will be more difficult to justify.”

Sales growth in the SUV sector continues, increasing by 38%. Indeed, the Toyota HiLux topped the sales charts for the month. Overall, the market is up 20.3% year-to-date compared with 2009. In all 333,228 new vehicles have been sold in 2010. Toyota, Holden and Ford filled the three highest selling posts for April.

Audi R8 GT in Samoa Orange

Audi R8 GT in Samoa Orange

What do you think? I reckon this Samoa Orange colour looks pretty good on the Audi R8 GT. The contrasting sideblades and fixed rear wing really complement the bright, but not too bright, paint work.

The R8 GT is available in three other colours, including Suzuka Gray metallic, Ice Silver metallic and Phantom Black pearl effect.

Audi Australia have confirmed with AUSmotive that a small number of R8 GTs will be making their way down under. At this stage, though, that’s all they would confirm. Full details will be announced closer to its Australian release.

UPDATE: Just 33 examples of the R8 GT have been set aside for UK delivery. You would expect Australia to get under half that number. Less than 10 would be my guess.

2010 Audi R8 GT officially announced

Audi R8 GT

Audi has just released official info on their latest R8 supercar. Badged the Audi R8 GT the car is limited to 333 examples and boasts an enhanced 5.2 litre V10 engine producing 412kW (560hp). With 100kg of weight stripped from it, the R8 GT, with standard R tronic transmission, can accelerate to 100km/h in 3.6 seconds.

Those numbers represent an improvement of 26kW and 0.3 seconds over the regular R8 V10. Other differences include a revised body kit, first seen in last week’s spy shots. You can pick it by the carbon fibre front splitter and rear diffuser. Also note the aluminium side mirror mounts and fixed rear wing. The side “flicks”on the outer front wings also give the game away, while helping to increase the GT’s downforce. Revised LED daytime running lights, now form a constant strip of light, also indicate this is a more special R8.

Weight reduction of the R8 GT was achieved in obvious areas such as lighter seats and battery, resulting in a combined saving of 40kg. Use of a thinner glass windscreen and polycarbonate elsewhere yielded a net loss of 9kg. Carbon fibre reinforced plastic body panels also saved over 13kg of precious weight. The level of detail sought is impressive, though. For example, careful selection and trimming of materials for the carpets, insulation, the air intake, the braking system, the fixed rear wing and more contributed to the GT’s diet. Over 2.5kg was saved through the use of thinner sheet metal with addition cutouts, as well.

Given those weight savings it is surprising, perhaps, that few luxuries have been lost inside the cabin. Climate control and power windows you can probably excuse. But a standard navigation system and 465 watt Bang & Olufsen stereo seem a little counter-productive. The alcantara covered steering wheel is a nice touch, though. Its a shame the same can’t be said for the white dials.

The quattro all-wheel drive system sends 85 per cent of the car’s power to the rear wheels under normal driving conditions. The car’s 43:57 weight distribution and tweaks to its ESP parameters allows “spectacular, but safe, oversteer when accelerating our of a corner”. That’s what we like to see.

Wheels are 19″ in size and made from forged alloy. Up front they are 8.5″ wide, while 11″ at the back should help in getting all that power down. Carbon fibre ceramic brakes are standard in the GT, set off nicely by red anodised six pot calipers under the front wheels.

Die hard track day warriors can also option a bolt in roll cage and a four-point harness system to keep them in place.

Available in just four colours—Samoa Orange metallic, Suzuka Gray metallic, Ice Silver metallic and Phantom Black pearl effect—you can secure an R8 GT in Germany for the tidy sum of €193,000 (approx AU$280K). If the R8 GT does find its way down under, expect to pay almost double that. But, if you could, you would. Wouldn’t you?

More pics and Audi’s press release after the break.
