It’s under the bonnet son

Audi quattro concept

Normally, getting engine photos of manufacturer’s hero car is not too hard. But for the Audi quattro concept it has proved a little difficult. Until now. French website AudiPassion managed to stick its camera under the bonnet of the stunning concept and has recently published the results.

Revealed, as expected, is the TT RS engine. However, you can also see things are a bit untidy there and not to the usual level of Audi refinement. This is most likely the reason they have been reluctant to show off the car’s beating heart.

When mounted longitudinally, as opposed to transversely in the TT RS, the 2.5 litre inline five cylinder is taller and longer than Audi’s V10. No wonder it’s a tight squeeze requiring a few shortcuts here and there.

Is Volkswagen about to dump its twincharged 1.4 litre engine?

Volkswagen 1.4 litre TSI engine

Despite winning the 2009 International Engine of the Year award speculation is rife that Volkswagen will be discontinuing its twincharged 1.4 litre engine. While the clever use of supercharging and turbocharging offers excellent access to power right through the rev range it’s believed Volkswagen considers the engine to be too complex and expensive.

Until Volkswagen makes a public comment we won’t know for sure if that is their official stance. However, reliability seems to be a real concern for this otherwise charming and efficient engine, too.

At least, that’s the case based on anecdotal evidence posted to our user-based Golf VI 1.4 TSI Tried & Tested review. Of the 16 comments posted to date, half relate to engine complaints. A quick google search of “VW 1.4 TSI engine problems” will also yield many more results than Volkswagen would care for.

So, it’s probably a case of watching this space to see how Volkswagen responds. What effect this news may have on the new Polo GTI or A1 1.4 TFSI is also unclear.

Audi RS3 unlikely to show its face in Australia

2011 Audi RS3

Late last year we had a confidential whisper come our way suggesting that Audi’s stonking 250kW RS3 might not be coming to Australia. True to our source we sat on the rumour, and unfortunately for Audi fans, the info appears to have been proved correct. Further reports have reached AUSmotive HQ of Audi dealers confirming to their customers that the RS3 will not be offered for sale in Australia.

Apparently an Australian Design Rule compliance issue is at least part of the reason for the decision. Details are a bit sketchy, and we will seek confirmation from Audi Australia, however it is understood that for the RS3 to be approved for the Australian market it would need to undergo a specific crash test which is not required in any other market aside from Japan.

We’ll report back after we have heard from Audi.

Audi A1 quattro prototype testing in Canada

Audi A1 quattro prototype

Audi Canada is currently running a Fascination quattro training event for its customers at Mont Tremblant, near Montreal. One of the unexpected stars of the show is this one-off A1 quattro development car.

Despite months of rumours, quattro for the A1 was officially confirmed just a few days ago. No detail is given as to the engine used in this prototype, although the body kit is the same as the 136kW 1.4 TFSI announced last September.

That was the car everyone thought was going to be called the S1, only to have expectations scuppered by Audi at the last minute. Of course, the main reason for saving the “S” badge was due to that car being front-wheel drive only.

Now, though, Audi are saying that, for the A1 range, quattro will be fitted to “future high performance variants”. Not the use of plural for variants. Is that a preview that Audi is planning both an A1 and an RS1?

Making this a truly international affair, you can read the Audi UK press release after the break.

Audi officially confirms quattro for A1

Audi A1 quattro teaser

Audi has sent out a few odds and ends discussing its future plans for its quattro technology. Much of it is actually old information. However, despite senior staff being quoted as such, this is the first time Audi has sent out a press release confirming quattro will be available on the A1 platform.

Looking at the image above, previewed in a brief promo video shown after the break, the A1 quattro has a meaty look to it, as well. It could be an S1, or even an RS1, perhaps. The question remains, then, to how many A1-based models will quattro be fitted?

AUSmotive learned some time ago that the A1 had been approved for quattro, but then the whole S1-that-we-can’t-call-an-S1-because-it-doesn’t-have-quattro debacle happened. It wasn’t long, though, until new rumours emerged about an all-wheel drive A1 and now it looks like it’s as good as done.

Based on the info available to date the A1 will use a Haldex quattro system similar to the set up employed in the A3 platform. This means a predominantly front-wheel drive scenario with a hydraulic multi-plate clutch distributing torque to the rear, up to 100%, as required.

Check out the press release below for more info.

New vehicle sales report – December 2010

FCAI banner

Congratulations Australia, for just the third time ever we have managed to send over 1 million new vehicles out the door. To be exact, 1,035,574 passenger cars, SUVs and commercial vehicles found new homes in 2010 and that represents an increase of almost 100,000 sales on 2009 figures.

“This is an exceptional outcome and is the second highest result on record and only the third time ever that the market exceeded more than one million sales,” FCAI Chief Executive Andrew McKellar said.

“With continuing strong levels of vehicle affordability there is no reason why the new vehicle market won’t continue to perform better than other areas of the economy.”

Toyota was the highest selling marque in 2010, with 214,718 sales registered. Holden and Ford followed with 132,923 and 95,824 sales respectively.

Holden can claim still bragging rights, though, with the Commodore proving to be Australia’s most popular car for the fifteenth year in a row. Its 45,956 sales placed it ahead of the Toyota Corolla, on 41,632, and the Toyota Hilux, with an impressive 39,896 sales.

Meanwhile, a number of other marques are shouting from the rooftops about their new records set in 2010, including BMW, Hyundai, Mazda, Subaru, Suzuki and Volkswagen.

UPDATE 7 January: Audi, Kia and Mitsubishi have released their brag sheets today, too.

Audi says: “No RS4 for you!”

Audi RS4

Here’s one story we had hoped we wouldn’t need to tell. Audi has no plans to build an immediate successor to its almighty RS4. AUSmotive heard this information several months ago, too, but we were hoping we were being led down the garden path. Despite earlier rumours to the contrary, it appears we weren’t.

Supposedly the 331kW RS5 is deemed to provide enough RS thrills on the current B8 platform (or derivative) of the current A4.

Assuming this latest word is correct, it need not mean the end of the RS4 nameplate forever. There have been two RS4 models created by quattro GmbH, one built on the B5 platform (2000–01), the other, and perhaps best of the RS models made to date, built on B7 architecture (2006–08). With any luck, we’ll see a B9 RS4 around 2014, give or take a year.

To remind you why RS4s are the business, even if the B5 wasn’t quite the real deal, you can access a couple of clips after the break.

Craig Lowndes to drive factory Audi R8 LMS at Bathurst 12 hour

Team Audi Penfold

Some ripping news for local Audi fans, with word from Speedcafe telling us that Audi Race Experience Team Joest will be sending two 2010 spec R8 LMS machines to compete in the 2011 Bathurst 12 hour.

Team Joest is effectively the Audi factory team responsible for the company’s nine Le Mans 24 hour victories. This is big news for local endurance racing. Lowndes will be joined by fellow V8 Supercar driver Warren Luff and Australian GT racer Mark Eddy. Of course, Eddy is already known to Audi after competing this year at the wheel of a 2009 spec R8 LMS (pictured above).

The second R8 will be crewed by Audi sportscar regular Marc Basseng, WTCC driver driver Darryl O’Young and 2009 FIA GT3 European Champion Christopher Heis. As you can see Audi means business.

“Racing in the Bathurst 12 Hour has been on the ‘to-do’ list for some time,” said five-time Bathurst 1000 winner Lowndes. “The R8 looks like a fantastic car and I can’t wait to get behind the wheel in February.”

The 2011 Bathurst 12 hour is scheduled for the weekend of 4–6 February.

Latest word on the Audi RS7

Audi RS7 rendering

Now that the Audi RS3 is done and dusted the lads from quattro GmbH are reportedly concentrating their efforts on an RS7 model, based on the A7 Sportback.

Wearing the usual Audi RS warpaint, or should that be stealth disguise, it’s understood the RS7 will be powered by a 4.0 litre twin-turbo V8. Sounds pretty good. And so does the near on 600hp expected from that engine.

The quattro system will likely steal a few ideas form the RS5, including the crown differential and torque vectoring. It’s being reported the RS7 could debut late next year. We’re not so sure about that timing and would prefer you to pencil in 2012, or even 2013. We used to a few years of teasing from Audi, after all.

Drive Thru: Audi A1 1.4 TFSI Ambition

Audi A1

Audi claim its new A1 is the next big thing. They reckon it will set new benchmarks in the small car segment, especially at the premium end. We spent some time in an A1 1.4 TFSI Ambition earlier this week and put Audi’s claims to the test.

Let’s start with the looks. Overall we rate the A1 pretty well in this area. There’s definite four-ringed styling cues, but the littlest Audi sold in Australia has enough individuality to carve its own niche. Okay, the wasabi green interior highlights of our test car may not be to everyone’s taste, but the A1 is about fun; to be honest, the bright colour tended to mellow the longer we spent in the car. The flashes of colour added to the cabin provide a welcome change and the ability to tailor choices to one’s taste is also refreshing to see.

Comparisons with MINI are impossible to avoid with the A1 and while the MINI might have the edge on exterior cheekiness—just—the A1 has a better built interior. Perhaps the A1’s slightly more conventional dash layout will win over those buyers who can’t get past the MINI’s dominant centrally mounted speedo, as well. So long as you’re not sitting in the back seat, the cabin of the A1 really is a great place to be. Audi has certainly achieved its aim of bringing a premium feel into a compact hatch.

Audi shows off new R18 Le Mans racecar

Audi R18

Rather than lifting the lid, Audi Sport has placed a lid on its latest Le Mans LMP1 challenger, the R18. Revealed at an Ingolstadt shindig on Friday the R18 has a tough act to follow, with its predecessors—R8, R10 TDI and R15 TDI—all winning at Le Mans, including this year’s 24 hour classic. They racked up a staggering nine wins between them, and, obviously, Audi hopes the R18 has it what it takes to notch up a tenth win.

New regulations at Le Mans will see the R18 use a 3.7 ltre V6 TDI, quite a change from the 5.5 litre V10 TDI used previously. As a result Audi say the need for improved aerodynamic efficiency is the reason they’ve gone with a closed roof body.

Illustrating just how much commitment is required for this race program, the R18 began its life back in 2009. Engine tests have been under way for several months and Audi driver Allan McNish completed the car’s first test last month. Continued testing and development will see the R18 make its race debut in a six hour enduro at Spa on 8 May 2011. That will be the car’s only race prior to Le Mans, which will be held on 11–12 June.
