40 years of ‘Vorsprung durch Technik’

Audi - Vorsprung durch Technik

Vorsprung durch Technik

It’s one of the few foreign language advertising slogans to gain lasting traction in the English speaking world, and in 2011 it celebrates its 40th anniversary. The term means ‘advancement through technology’ and, as you would expect, Audi say it has as much value to their brand today as it did back in 1971.

Followers of pop culture will know of references to the slogan in songs by Blur and U2. It also gained a mention in the cult film Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.

After the break yo can see more from Audi, including a pretty cool commercial for the R8 and the iconic ski jump ad for Audi’s quattro all-wheel drive system.

Audi shows how to make a 500hp hot hatch

First, we got the news that Audi had not only dreamed up a 370kW A1 clubsport, but actually built it as well. Then we get told that inside Audi the car is referred to as the RS1. Now you can watch a video of it being made.

Audi, please make the A1 clubsport a production reality, in some form or other.

[Thanks to Mitch for the tip]

Audi 1.4 TFSI Sport – Australian pricing & specs

Audi A1 1.4 TFSI Sport

Audi Australia has just launched its pocket rocket A1 1.4 TFSI Sport. With 136kW/250Nm provided by the twincharge engine and a 7-speed S tronic gearbox the A1 Sport can reach 100km/h in 6.9 seconds.

The A1 Sport is based on the 1.4 TFSI Ambition we tested last December and we reckon the extra 46kW on offer will be worth the wait.

Quality and power in the A1 range does come at a price, though. That price starts at $42,500 (manufacturer’s list pricing). While the A1 Sport is reasonably well specced, with current must-haves such as bi-xenons headlights and Bluetooth connectivity, among other goodies, driveaway prices in the $50K range won’t be hard to achieve. Remember, the Volkswagen Polo GTI, essentially the same car underneath a less premium skin, is comfortably cheaper.

MINI has been able to establish a strong niche for high-cost hatchbacks without too much fuss. Is there room for another heavy-hitter in the premium hot hatch market?

After the break there’s Audi Australia’s press release, plus three PDFs for download which will tell you everything you need to know about the A1 1.4 TFSI Sport. For now, we can’t wait for a drive.

BMW 1 Series side by side against A3 and Golf

BMW 1 Series v Audi A3 v VW Golf

Thanks to BimmerPost who have lined up the new BMW 1 Series hatch against the current Audi A3 and Volkswgaen Golf. It’s worth noting the current 8P A3 was first released in way back in 2003, although, it has been freshened up by a couple of modest facelifts, most recently a couple of years ago. Similarly, the Mk6 Golf was released almost three years ago. Itself a mild development on the Mk5 model first seen in 2003.

The Golf does look the cheaper of the three, as it should. Under the circumstances it must be said the Audi A3 has aged quite gracefully, still holding its place alongside the new generation from Munich.

Audi is due to launch its third generation A3 later this year and the Mk7 Golf is likely to be seen within the next two years. On that basis, should BMW be concerned that their newest model doesn’t seem to be a clear step forward on cars that had their roots laid almost a full decade ago?

“Internally we refer to this car as the RS1”

Audi A1 clubsport

These are the words of Audi head of design Stefan Sielaff, as reported by What Car. The car he is referring to, of course, is the bonkers A1 clubsport, complete with 370kW, revealed at Wörthersee a few days ago.

Sielaff continued the RS1 tease by saying the A1’s engine bay wouldn’t need to be modified to fit the 2.5 litre five cylinder should the car go into series production. It’s unlikely any road going model would be released sporting the full 370kW, but even the standard 250kW found in the TT RS would be most welcome.

The A1 clubsport is 400kg lighter than its production siblings, and while that may be a stretch too far if an RS1 is made, Sielaff reckons a weight saving of 200kg could be achieved.

Consider our appetite whet!

2012 Audi R8 GT Spyder officially announced

Audi R8 GT Spyder

It’s only been a couple of weeks since the an undisguised R8 GT Spyder was spied, and now Audi has officially taken the wraps off and published a set of images and basic press information.

Like the R8 GT hardtop, the Spyder will be limited to 333 examples. A regimented carbon fibre diet has seen the R8 GT Spyder shed 85 kilograms, which helps the 412kW convertible reach 100km/h in a mere 3.8 seconds before reaching a v-max of 317km/h.

The R8 GT Spyder lifts its engine and drivetrain from the tintop. That means you’ll find a delightful 5.2 litre V10 coupled to a quattro all-wheel drive system and a 6-speed R tronic transmission beneath the Spyder’s great looking exterior.

Deliveries are expected to begin in early 2012, following a public debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show. You’ll find more from Audi after the break.

UPDATE 9 June: Audi Australia has confirmed just five GT Spyders will be coming to Australia in the latter half of 2012. Pricing is yet to be announced, but you’d better get in quick!

Audi R4 now good 2 go

Audi R4

It’s only a few weeks ago that Auto Motor und Sport theorised the Audi R4 and its Volkswagen Group cousins had been scrapped, or at least, sent to the bottom of the new product queue. However, word is now circulating that the R4 has been given the green light at Ingolstadt. A move which will also rejuvenate the futures of the Volkswagen BlueSport and a new entry-level Porsche. The latter inspired by the 1950s 550 model.

Autocar quotes an uncredited Audi source, “We have not abandoned plans for a roadster along the lines of the E-tron Spyder. We have reached a stage where we are moving forward and are now in the process of progressing the business case further, but it won’t go on sale until after the third-generation TT.”

That indicates a possible launch date of 2014 or 2015. However, the Autocar source did offer a very slight get out clause, before raising hopes, “We have to make sure there is space in the line-up without causing a conflict with existing models. It will definitely happen.”

More detail can be found by following the source link below.

Wörthersee 2011: Audi A1 clubsport

Audi A1 clubsport

Imagine if Audi took a regular A1 body and stuffed it full of TT RS goodness. That’d be pretty cool, right. But what if they said, “No, that 250kW inline five cylinder is a bit weak; let’s pump it up to 370kW!”

Well, imagine no longer, because Audi has done just that with this one-off A1 clubsport creation. The 500hp A1 will be on show at Wörthersee from 1–4 June.

The A1 clubsport has been widened by 60mm and the flared guards look great, while honouring the great tradition of the Ur-Quattro. The DTM-inspired side-exit exhaust is a nice touch, as well.

At 1390kg, Audi reckon the A1 clubsport, with a 6-speed manual and quattro, will reach 100km/h in a mere 3.7 seconds, 200km/h takes a brief 10.9 seconds.

After the break you’ll see Audi’s official press release, along with a gallery of photos that will have you wishing this mini-beast was in your driveway.

Lowndes-Luff pairing failed to start at the Ring

Craig Lowndes and Warren Luff

Unfortunately the trip to Germany for Craig Lowndes and Warren Luff to race in a VLN endurance round at the Nürburgring turned out to be little more than a tourist visit to the Audi factory in Neckarsulm.

According to a short paragraph in the latest Audi Motorsport newsletter Lowndes binned his R8 LMS in practice. He was not injured, but the Australian driver pairing were forced to sit out the race.

Bugger.

UPDATE: Comments from Lowndes can be read over at Speedcafe.com.

Allan McNish on the Le Mans 24 hour race

Audi and two-time Le Mans winner Allan McNish have prepared this excellent short film about the rigours of racing in the world’s most famous 24 hour race.

The promo will premiere on television screens this weekend during the final of the UEFA Champions League at Wembley.

It’s damn good, too, and the team at UK ad agency BBH should be very proud. Watch the clip above and then read more in Audi’s official presser after the break.

Audi S1 to be powered by new 1.6 litre turbo

Audi S1 prototype

World Car Fans brings word the upcoming Audi S1 could be powered by a new 1.6 litre turbo engine. We already know the S1 will use a quattro all-wheel drive system, but this is the first time we’ve heard detailed speculation on engine configuration. Ensuring the S1 lives up to its S badging it’s expected the new 1.6T will pack a 160kW+ punch. That’s around 220bhp in the old money.

Also quoted, from an earlier Audi press release, “an electronically controlled, hydraulically actuated multi-plate clutch located in front of the rear axle for an optimized distribution of weight.”

If Audi can nail the suspension tuning and offer up a well sorted hot hatch they might have a winner on their hands. At the very least the MINI John Cooper Works will have a fierce rival in the premium hatch segment. Perhaps BMW may see if they can squeeze their own All4 all-wheel drive technology into the MINI hardtop as well. Happy times!

Audi R8 GT Spyder getting closer

Audi R8 GT Spyder

Undisguised prototypes of the Audi R8 GT Spyder have been seen about in the last few days. It’s expected the car will make its public debut at Frankfurt later this year.

The ragtop will use the mechanicals from the already released R8 GT, which was limited to a production run of 333 cars. That means there’ll be a truly bahn storming 412kW V10 howling right behind your ears. And without a roof to muffle the noise we expect it will be one motoring’s best aural experiences.

The regular R8 Spyder tips the scales a meaty 1725kg, but following a GT diet the convertible may follow suit from its hardtop sibling by shedding around 100kg.
