This is gonna hurt

Aston Martin V8 Vantage rally crash

The car you’re looking at used to be an Aston Martin V8 Vantage. It was being driven by Ivan Thompson and Karl Francis in the Rally Calder event on the weekend. You can see video of the massive crash after the break.

Be safe knowing both driver and co-driver are okay. Although the co-driver was taken to hospital for x-rays where it was discovered he had a dislocated pelvis, but he was cleared of any neck and spinal injuries.

Thankfully, questions over the use of the concrete barriers are the major outcome of this impact. It could have been much, much worse.

[Thanks to Ryan for the tip]

UPDATE: Photos of the crash can be seen on Joel Strickland’s Facebook page.

The Australian Rally Championship has sent out an official press release and photos of this incident. They have been added below.

Aston Martin V12 Zagato ready for Geneva

Aston Martin V12 Zagato

Aston Martin has released a new promo video of the V12 Zagato. It will be on show in Geneva after making its public debut in Kuwait, of all places.

They say no cars were harmed in the making of the clip. We’d say the ego of the director was. With the material available to work with, surely a better result could have been achieved. That V12 sure does sound good, shame it’s not always in sync with the action.

Limited-run Aston Martin V12 Zagato revealed

Aston Martin V12 Zagato

Aston Martin has released official info for the production version of its V12 Zagato ahead of the car’s public debut at the Kuwait Concours d’ Elegance. If that audience seems a little strange to you then you’ll be comforted to know the V12 Zagato will also be on display at the Geneva Motor Show in March.

After coming to life last year in racing trim, only 150 road-ready V12 Zagatos will be made and if you’re in the UK you’ll need £330,000 plus taxes to get your hands on one. To put the price of this exclusive model in context for the same money you could buy a Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0 and a 911 Turbo, or three Audi R8 V10s or even 13 MINI JCW hatchbacks. Hmm, a top-end 911, R8 V10 and a MINI JCW would make a nice collection.

Despite the rather crude Meccacno-like rear wing, none of those cars cut quite the same figure as the stylish Zagato, though. And if you’re buying at that end of the market you’re probably not too fussed about the price of exclusivity.

Aston Martin’s CEO, Dr Ulrich Bez, thinks that and more, saying the V12 Zagato is “a celebration of both Aston Martin’s heritage and its future. Our relationship with Zagato stretches back more than 50 years. Together in that time we have created a series of very special cars.

“The first – the DB4GT Zagato – is a true icon: fast, beautiful and incredibly desirable. In the V12 Zagato I believe we have captured the spirit of that car and combined it with a confident twist of modernity to give it a character all of its own.”

Aston Martin V12 Zagato to debut in Kuwait

Aston Martin V12 Zagato

Aston Martin has announced the production version of the V12 Zagato will be unveiled at the Kuwait Concours d’ Elegance (15–18 February).

It’s not clear if the road-going models will differ in bodystyle from the race and concept versions we have already seen, but the supplied image above shows there’s been some minor changes to the rear of the car, with the addition of a rear spoiler. We’d also expect the aggressive diffuser of the race/concept models to have been toned down a little.

Only 150 Zagatos will be made and you’ll need £330,000 plus taxes if you want to join the exclusive club.

evo Car of the Year videos

Evo magazine has assembled 10 of the world’s best performance cars to try and establish which one they think was the best to hit the market in 2011. Following a few phone calls, 10 turned into 11 when they added the just released BMW M5 to the list. As you would. The results of eCOTY 2011 are out there, but we won’t give that away just yet in case you’re waiting for the mag.

In the meantime here’s the list of cars gathered at the mercy of some heavy right feet. Highlight videos from Chris Harris on each can also be seen after the break. He was banned from driving the Ferrari, thanks to his rant against the Prancing Horse earlier this year, but managed to find way to get by.

Roberto Ricci’s Rapide wipeout

Aston Martin Rapide

Roberto Ricci, Italian surfboard maker, is a pretty wealthy dude. Wealthy enough to buy an Aston Martin Rapide only to carelessly crash it after asking himself “what does this button do?” Afterwards it all seemed a bit of a laugh, really.

Perhaps he should have spent some of his money on driving lessons. Check out the video after the break.

It’s official: Aston Martin is cool

Aston Martin Vantage range

With models like the Vantage, Virage and even the four-door Rapide, Aston Martin is considered a leader in automotive design. Never mind that the cars are also pretty decent as well. In general, you know an Aston Martin is going to be a beautiful car.

Further to this, their boss, Ulrich Bez, races his product in one of the toughest motoring events ever, the Nürburgring 24 hour race. And they also make special models like the new V12 Zagato.

It’s little surprise, then, to learn Aston has been voted as the UK’s coolest brand, mixing with the likes of other market leaders, such as Apple and Bang & Olufsen.

Speaking about the award Stephen Cheliotis, Chief Executive, The Centre for Brand Analysis and Chairman of the CoolBrands Council said, “Smooth, sexy and sophisticated; British built, high quality and hand finished, let’s be honest, young or old, male or female, opinion former or British public, who wouldn’t aspire to own what is truly the coolest car on the road. Number one in five of the last six years, this British icon is truly the coolest of the cool.”

Aston Martin V12 Zagato heading to Frankfurt

Aston Martin V12 Zagato

Aston Martin has already confirmed they will be building a limited production run of 150 gorgeous V12 Zagatos. Now, ahead of a showing at the Frankfurt Motor Show, they’ve given us a couple of new pics to whet our appetites.

And, if you’re keen on one of these flash Zagato models, you’ll need a very expensive appetite as well. The cost of admission is a tidy £330K (AU$515K) plus taxes.

Assuming sir didn’t have to ask, then he would be rewarded with one of the coolest and most exclusive cars on the planet. Of course, the raucous 6.0 litre V12 and its 380kW will provide their own unique rewards.

Nothing now can ever come to any good

The end is nigh

Sir Stirling Moss—acknowledged as the greatest driver never to win a Formula One world championship, a gentleman, a hero—has done the unthinkable. By being associated with that thing above, Moss has allowed himself to be used in the marketing of one of the most cynical automotive exercises known to man.

With apologies to WH Auden:

Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
power, beauty and soul have been left alone,
pour away the oil, if only they would,
for nothing now can ever come to any good.

Aston Martin confirms V12 Zagato production

Aston Martin V12 Zagato

Aston Martin’s reconnection with Zagato is now complete following confirmation 150 new V12 Zagato models will be built for road use.

Only revealed in May, the V12 Zagato has already led an action-packed life. At the Villa D’ Este Concours in Italy the car was awarded gongs for design in both concept and prototype classes. Before they even had time to polish the trophies Aston was at the Nürburgring with Zig and Zag ready to push out a combined 48 hours of endurance racing on the world’s toughest track.

The V12 Zagato will be handmade at the company’s Gaydon headquarters with orders for the aluminium/carbon fibre creation now being taken. It’s a case of first in first served, so pass the hat around and see if you can muster up £330K and change, because that’s the price of admission.

Powered by a 380kW 6.0 litre V12 the new Aston Zagato is sure to become a modern-day collector’s item. In fact, Chief Executive Dr Ulrich Bez, pretty much guarantees as much, “Such style, exclusivity and fastidious craftsmanship ensures it will be one of the most highly coveted models in Aston Martin’s 98-year history. A fabulous celebration of the iconic DB4GT Zagato, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, the V12 Zagato is the perfect inspiration for the next 50 years of Aston Martin.”
