The best news you will hear from Alfa Romeo. Ever!

Alfa Romeo 4C

Car magazine brings word of some great news from Italian icons Alfa Romeo. In fact we’re not sure you’ll hear anything better than this as far as Alfa is concerned. Yep, it’s even better, on the whole, than anything to do with the gorgeous 4C.

Fiat-Chrysler CEO, Sergio Marchionne, hopes to reach 300,000 annual sales for Alfa Romeo and to achieve that he wants to lure buyers of traditional German saloons to the Italian brand. To do that he needs to get the driving dynamics of Alfa Romeos to compare favourably against BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

And here it comes.

To do that Marchionne wants to ditch front-wheel drive platforms from Alfa Romeo in favour of rear and all-wheel drive models. That’s right, no more FWD models from Alfa and in their place will be RWD models to take it up to the likes of the BMW 3 and 5 Series, and the Mercedes C and E Class.

Apparently Alfa plans to introduce four new models, two saloons and two SUVs, with a company insider telling Car: “Sure, design is important, Italian flair is important, top-notch quality is important. But it is impossible to challenge Audi, BMW and Mercedes if you cannot match the Germans in terms of vehicle dynamics and driving pleasure.”

Amen brother.

VIDEO: Alfa Romeo 4C hits the track

Alfa Romeo 4C

Alfa Romeo sent its lightweight 4C sportscar out for a spin around the Balocco proving ground and took some cameras along to catch all the action. The result is this promo video which doesn’t say much other than: Look at me!

A quick reminder, too, that the 4C will make its dynamic debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in a couple of weeks.

Alfa Romeo 4C let loose in Madrid

Alfa Romeo 4C

Earlier this week Alfa Romeo sent its gorgeous 4C out on the streets of Madrid. Former F1 driver Marc Gené was at the wheel and his task was to get a member of the public to hop in and enjoy the ride.

The YouTube description, originally in Spanish, translates via Google as:

Last Tuesday June 12, the Formula 1 driver Marc Gené took the wheel of our sport, the Alfa Romeo 4C, prepared to surprise whoever was willing to accompany you on your route.

And so it was, an adventure full of speed, elegance and “cuore sportivo” authentically Alfa Romeo.

The 4C Launch Edition will make its “dynamic” debut at next month’s Goodwood Festival of Speed.

Building the Alfa Romeo 4C

Alfa Romeo 4C production line

Here’s a great behind the scenes look at the ever so sexy Alfa Romeo 4C being built. Like the 8C Competizione before it the good folk at Maserati have been given the job of building the 4C.

They start with a carbon fibre tub and carefully bond it all together to finally form one of the most highly anticipated cars of 2013. Tipping the scales at just 895kg (dry weight) the 179kW on tap from the all-aluminium 1750cc turbocharged four cylinder is sure to make this sportscar a real treat.

In fact the engine and 6-speed dual clutch combo weigh in at only 135kg combined, some 24kg lighter than the Giulietta.

Alfa Romeo 4C making its way to Goodwood

Alfa Romeo 4C

Alfa Romeo brings word the 4C Launch Edition will be on display and in action at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed (12–14 July). When the 4C takes on the famous Goodwood hill climb course it will be the first time the UK public gets to see the highly anticipated sporstcar driven in anger.

But, you know, whatever. We won’t be there. Will you? Doesn’t matter because it’s still a welcome excuse to share a couple of new pics with you.

This 4C really is a fine looking machine, don’t you reckon. And with the tech specs (179kW/350Nm, 895kg dry weight) to back up its looks Alfa will really have to cock something up pretty badly if this is not a mighty fine driver’s car.

Listen to the Alfa Romeo 4C

Alfa Romeo 4C

The place to be before the Geneva Motor Show opened was outside the doors into the venue where the cars are driven in. One punter was there and captured this video of the Alfa Romeo 4C. It’s not the highest quality clip you’re ever going to see and the sound of the engine isn’t the most definitive you’ll ever hear either, but it does bring us closer to one of the most currently anticipated cars on the planet.

Geneva 2013: Alfa Romeo 4C ‘Launch Edition’

Alfa Romeo 4C

Finally the long tease for the Alfa Romeo 4C is over. This, though, is the 4C ‘Launch Edition’ and it looks great in either of its two paint options, Carrara White or Alfa Red. There’s been a lot of speculation about this car and rather than rehash it all we’ll just list the facts, some of which are specific to the Launch Edition run. First, though, the all important weight of this sexy supercar has been confirmed at just 895kg!

  • 4C ‘Launch Edition’ priced from €60,000 and is ready to order now
  • ‘Launch Edition’ limited to 400 examples shared between Europe, Africa and the Middle East; 500 in the United States; just 100 for the rest of the world
  • 1750cc turbo petrol engine produces 179kW (240hp)/350Nm (80% of peak torque from 1700rpm)
  • Mid-engine, rear wheel drive configuration
  • 6-speed Alfa TCT twin dry clutch transmission
  • Carbon fibre monocoque central cell (weighs just 65kg)
  • Front and rear structures of the chassis made from aluminium
  • Roof reinforcements made from aluminium
  • Dry weight 895kg
  • 40:60 weight distribution (front:rear)
  • 3990mm long, 2000mm wide, 1180mm high, 2380mm wheelbase
  • Bi-LED headlights
  • Standard alloy wheels 17″ front, 18″ rear
  • Optional alloy wheels 18″ front, 19″ rear
  • Alfa DNA selector with ‘Race’ mode
  • TFT digital instrument display
  • Built at Maserati plant in Modena
  • Annual production capacity 3500 (1500 for Europe, 1200 for US, 800 rest of the world)
  • 0–100km/h in 4.5 seconds
  • Top speed 250km/h+

At this stage rumours suggest a sub-$80,000 price tag for the Australian market. The 4C is due on local shores in 2014.

Alfa Romeo 4C to weigh less than 960kg

Alfa Romeo 4C

Alfa Romeo has added to its earlier 4C preview by confirming the 1750 turbo petrol engine in the stunning coupé will have 240hp (179kW). They also proudly state that: the excellent dynamic features of Alfa Romeo 4C are confirmed by a weight to power ratio of less than 4 kg/HP; it’s a value worthy of a real ‘supercar’.

So while Alfa is yet to officially declare the kerbweight of its carbon fibre special we can rely on simple maths to come to the conclusion that 240 multiplied by 4 equals 960. Therefore we know the Alfa Romeo 4C will weigh less than 960kg.

How much more do you want one now?

Full details will be announced when the 4C officially debuts at the Geneva Motor Show next week.

Your first look inside the Alfa Romeo 4C

Alfa Romeo 4C interior

Here’s your first peek at the finished interior of the greatly anticipated Alfa Romeo 4C. Two things strike you at first, the lack of any gearstick at all (which we were expecting) and the exposed carbon fibre tub. For now, we’ll describe that as being on the very cool side of being tacky.

The main instrument panel will be digital, as we’ve previously shown, and steering wheel mounted paddles will help you flick through the gears.

There’s just the one pic for now, which we can’t locate on any of our usual Alfa Romeo press sources. However, Autocar is quoting words from what appears to be an Alfa press release, so we expect to stumble across official info soon.

Apparently, Alfa Romeo says the materials for the 4C have been “designed and built for maximum driving satisfaction”, while the CF tub has been left exposed to “enhance the sense of light weight, technology and uniqueness”.

The 4C will make its full and public debut in Geneva in less than two weeks.
