Fifth Gear – Series 14, Episode 1

Fifth Gear - Series 14, Episode 1 - Rinspeed Squba

Fifth Gear is back on UK screens and Episode 1 of Series 14 saw the debut of a new presenter, Tim Shaw. No, not the Demtel man, but someone possibly as, erm, loveable. We also saw Snooker legend and resident bad boy Ronnie O’Sullivan get some advice on how to blow his Crucible winnings. He took his pick from a Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG, a BMW M3 Convertible and a Mitsubishi Evo X. Speaking of the Evo, Jason and Tiff put the Mitsubishi Evo X and the new-ish Subaru Impreza WRX STi to the test to determine which was the best track day weapon. Jonny showed that scrap metal is not always worth more than the sum of its parts. Tom tried to see if the Ford Kuga was a stick in the mud, and, well, it was, even if he reckons it’s otherwise okay. Cast your mind back the the slick Roger Moore James Bond era and you’ll see exactly where Rinspeed’s inspiration for the sQuba came from (pictured above).

See you next week.

MINI pedals zero emissions vehicle around Beijing

MINI Clubman Rickshaw

MINI has just launched a limited release zero emissions Clubman Rickshaw model on the streets of Beijing. At a time when the 2008 Olympic Games in China are under the spotlight due to the host city’s pollution this pedal powered MINI is just what the doctor ordered. The mobile Clubman is able to power through Beijing’s contested city streets like few other vehicles can.

Indeed the PR blurb states, “the MINI Rickshaw perfectly captures Beijing’s dynamic combination of tradition and progress, coupled with a touch of fantasy and individuality—as only MINI can do. The real Chinese lucky charms and talismen on the bicycle and in the inside of the vehicle are intended not only to bring the passenger luck, but also, of course, to release positive energy for the entire Olympic Games.”

If you’re on your way to the Chinese capital you’ll find the MINI Clubman Rickshaw in trendy club and scene districts such as the old Beijing quarter of Hu Tong.

First generation MINI Cabrio ceases production

R52 MINI Cabriolet Cooper S Sidewalk

Even though the R56 MINI has been on sale for some time, the R52 Cabriolet models currently on sale were still based on the first gen MINI platform. In readiness for the all new R57 model, Cabrio production has come to a temporary close after 164,000 R52s rolled off the line at MINI’s Plant Oxford. The MINI Cooper Cabrio accounted for 79,500 of the total sales with the MINI Cooper S Cabrio (and John Cooper Works versions) selling around 56,500 units. The remaining 28,000 were MINI One Cabrio models, not sold in Australia. The very last R52 Cabrio rolled off the line last week. It was a MINI Cooper S Cabrio Sidewalk finished in metallic White Silver, sold to a keen MINI fan from the USA.

News of the last R52 Cabrio came just days before MINI announced its one millionth MINI for export. Oliver Zipse, Managing Director MINI Plant Oxford said, “Export is a key factor for the success and stability of our MINI Plant in Oxford. Since MINI was launched we have seen a significant increase in export from less than 60 per cent in 2001 to over 80 per cent this year. The high customer demand in almost 80 countries around the world, from Chile to China, has driven MINI’s success over the last seven years.”

Volkswagen plans 200kW all wheel drive Golf GTI ‘R’

Volkswagen Golf W12 650

Following the release of details for the Golf VI comes news that a GTI prototype could be revealed as soon as October this year. It is expected a 160kW Golf VI GTI will be on sale in the second half of 2009 for European customers.

But the big news is the reported plans for a special Audi S3-based 200kW (265bhp) all wheel drive GTI ‘R’ variant. This will fill the void left after the naturally aspirated R32 is dropped from the Golf VI range due to EU emissions regulations.

The GTI and up-spec ‘R’ variant are expected to take styling cues from the radical GTI W12 650 concept car pictured above. Many Volkswagen fans have been calling for an all wheel drive GTI for some time and while some will lament the loss of the sweet sounding R32, an Audi S3 in Volkswagen clothing, and pricing, should be something to look forward to indeed.

Eastern Creek reveals plans for new ‘supercircuit’

Eastern Creek Raceway, proposed redevelopments

The Australian Racing Drivers Club (ARDC) has revealed major redevelopment plans for Sydney’s Eastern Creek International Raceway in a bid to make it Australia’s premier closed circuit motor racing facility. If the plans go ahead the new circuit would have six different racing layouts, including the main ‘International’ circuit at 4.7km in length. As many as three of the layouts could be used simultaneously. The redesign, carried out by UK-based Apex Circuit Design, would meet the FIA’s strict regulations for Formula One racing.

Despite Melbourne extending its deal for Albert Park to host the Australian Grand Prix until 2015, could we see F1 in western Sydney? Four-time Australian touring car champion and ARDC board member, Allan Moffat, seems to think so. “Bernie Ecclestone will get sick of Melbourne’s refusal to host a night race,” Moffat told the Daily Telegraph. “We would be in a position to take advantage. It would cost three times as much to develop a suitable facility on virgin land. We have the basis for it right here in the middle of Blacktown, Australia’s fastest growing area.”

“The circuit would be one of the most exciting and demanding in this country, and the equal of many internationally,” Apex managing director Clive Bowen said. “It has been designed to challenge the most accomplished driver, yet also appeal to corporate users.”

iPhone Apps – Free speedometers

iPhone speedometer apps

Being the Apple fanboi many believe me to be I was keen to get sucked into Apple’s iPhone hype, part of the fun in doing so has been the ability to mix some iPhone loving with some automotive related Apps. There are currently two free speedometer Apps on available through iTunes, the first simply called Speed (pictured left) is from Steven Troughton-Smith, while the second, SpeedBox, has been coded by Hans Schneider.

Speed wins on the graphics and ease of use, in fact there are no options or settings, just fire up the App and tap the screen to switch between km/h and mph. Mind, SpeedBox is pretty straightforward too, although you do need to press a Start button to get things happening. It also provides metric and imperial support, accessible through the small “i” button on the lower right of screen.

Both Apps make claims as to being “near-accurate” and I have tested these over a couple of days on my daily drives to and from work. In the case of Speed (version 1.0.1 tested) it’s not too bad. It will generally keep up with changes in speed without too much bother, and if not deadly accurate the speeds shown are generally close enough. Although, this morning, it dropped out in the last kilometre or so of my commute and left a big 0km/h reading. Speedbox (version 0.1 tested) on the other hand can be very sporadic. It does give an indication as to how strong the signal strength to the iPhone is, but that still doesn’t greatly affect accuracy in my experience. The readings often fluctuate wildly, especially when slowing down, for a corner, or to stop. Slowing from 60km/h to 25km/h, for example, can see the readings displayed go as high as 190km/h. While a few seconds later the reading could be 22km/h. It tends to work best when travelling at a constant speed, and at times it does seem to work quite well. But as much as SpeedBox tries to convince me that my car can accelerate from 30km/h to 289km/h in a matter of seconds, as it did on one drive, I know that’s just not possible! Good thing these are both currently free Apps as both seem suitable only for mildly amusing purposes, although Speed does have the edge.

Note: You can see from my screen captures that signal strength to my iPhone wasn’t great. Keep in mind this may have affected the results I have experienced, and your experience with these Apps may be different.

Coming soon, a comparison between Dynolicious and gMeter.

Volkswagen Golf VI in detail

2009 Volkswagen Golf VI in detail

Volkswagen’s release of images for the 2009 Golf VI has yielded the expected armchair evaluation in regards to the car’s exterior design. Some, like me, think the new car looks pretty good, while others think Volkswagen have played it too safe and not made enough of a progression from the current Golf V. Take a closer look at these images and decide for yourself (be sure to click each pic for a 1200x800px version). You may like to check out this AutoBild gallery for 55 new images. There is also quite a good Golf VI section on the autocar.co.uk website.

Yes, this is the new Golf VI!

2009 Volkswagen Golf VI

Following the leaked images from earlier this week Volkswagen has released official information about the new Golf VI. The images have also been released in higher resolution and 2000px super images can be accessed by clicking on the images in this article.

As expected the importance of the new Golf has not been lost by Prof Dr Martin Winterkorn, Volkswagen AG Chairman, and he claims the VI will raise the bar again for its market segment, “This sixth generation of Golf cars will completely redefine the quality and comfort level of its class over broad categories, offering more customer value than ever before.”

Volkswagen says fuel consumption across the board has been reduced by up to 28 per cent, with emissions now meeting Euro-5 standards. New technologies, such as automatic distance control and park steering assistant have been introduced. Revised ESP systems help increase safety capabilities, along with seven-aribags and daytime running lights as standard. Volkswagen also says big improvements have been made to reduce interior noise through the likes of new door seals, special windscreens and reworked wing mirrors.

Revised diesel engines will now use common rail injection and all diesel Golfs will be fitted with a particulate filter. Petrol powered engines have reduced fuel consumption, with all engines at launch having quoted consumption figures under 6.5l/100kms (with the exception of the normally aspirated 1.6-litre at 7.1l/100km). Conventional automatics have been completely replaced with re-worked DSG trasmissions.

While stating the bleeding obvious, the Golf is Volkswagen’s most important model, and the aim with the VI is to reduce manufacturing costs over the previous Golf V. The necessity to do this brought the release of the Golf VI forward by around two years and it remains to be seen if the measures put in place by Volkswagen will achieve their ultimate aims. They will certainly sell plenty of them, they just need to hope their return on investment meets their expectations. One could consider this more of a Golf V.5, rather than a completely new model, however, Volkswagen knows they cannot afford to drop the ball with the Golf and the changes and improvements made appear to be a step in the right direction. Some consider the styling of the Golf to be boring and unimaginative, although, as an unabashed fan of teutonic design, the more I look the Golf VI the more I begin to appreciate the revisions made. The more angular and sharper look is a solid improvement over the Golf V.

So far, at least, the Golf VI has the AUSmotive seal of approval. I can’t wait to get behind the wheel. Barring any unforseen overseas junkets, that will have to wait until around this time next year when the Golf VI is expected to be on sale in Australia. The Golf VI GTI should arrive here sometime before July 2010.

Full details of Volkswagen’s release, along with more images, can be viewed after the jump.

Update 15 January: Expect the Golf VI to have its Australian launch at the Melbourne International Motor Show (27 February–9 March).

Mercedes-Benz celebrates 50 years in Australia

Mercedes-Benz celebrates 50 years in Australia

Happy 50th birthday to Mercedes-Benz Australia! July 1958 marked the introduction of the Mercedes-Benz brand to Australia. From humble beginnings back in the late 50s Australia is now the world’s tenth largest market for the brand. Along the way the three pointed star has claimed three Wheels Car of the Year gongs and is on track to sell 30,000 cars in 2008.

Mercedes-Benz Australia’s full press release for this announcement follows. It’s actually quite an interesting potted history.
