Currency movements shift Toyota’s pricing upwards

Toyota Yaris will increase in price by as much as $800

The Global Financial Crisis has claimed it’s first genuine scalp in the local motor industry. The falling value of the Australian dollar against the Yen has seen Toyota Australia announce pricing increases on all of its imported models, with the exception of the Prius. The average increase on affected models is about 2.4 per cent. The new pricing regime will take effect on 1 January 2009.

Toyota Australia senior executive director sales and marketing David Buttner commented, “The Australian dollar has weakened against the yen by more than 35 per cent in the past three months.

“In the past year, there have also been steep increases in the prices of raw materials, such as steel. In the light of all these pressures, we believe the increase of 2.4 per cent from the start of the new year is extremely modest.”

Volume sellers such as the Yaris and Corolla will be affected by as much as $800 and $750 per model respectively. While the Kluger (up to $1500) and Prado (up to $2000) are at the higher end of the increases.

Pricing of Australian built Camry and Aurion models will not be affected. Toyota’s full press statement can be read below.

Volkswagen Golf VI crash test video




Last month we brought you the news that the new Volkswagen Golf VI has received a 5-star crash rating from Euro NCAP. Here’s the video. Clips like this make quite sobering viewing.

Take note of the lateral head movement of the infant dummy with the side impact test towards the end of 1 minute 20 clip. Despite this, the Golf VI scored highly for infant protection, with a portion of the report stating, “Based on the dummy readings from the dynamic tests, the Golf scored maximum points for its protection of both infants.”

Nissan GT-R Spec-V details leaked

Another day, another leak. This time details of the Nissan GT-R Spec-V have surfaced on the net. The details are claimed to be confirmed specifications and suggest an official reveal for the Spec-V (or V-Spec, whatever tickles your Godzilla bone) will be 8 January 2009.

From what we can see on the GTRblog website there’ll be lashings of carbon fibre, lightweight 20″ forged aluminium wheels, carbon brakes and a moderate 9kW power upgrade, among other things (full list after the jump). Surely that power increase can’t be right, but that’s what the GT-R experts are saying, so we’ll run with it for now.

We probably won’t get the Spec-V in Australia at all, or for a very long time if we do. But the predicted base price in Japan is Â¥15,750,000 (approx AU$265,000). That’s over AU$100,000 more than the GT-R’s Australian list price. Ouch!

Lewis Hamilton’s Formula 1 Supercircuit




This is a Mobil 1 promo clip where Lewis Hamilton strings together his favourite corners from Formula One circuits around the world to form his own “Supercircuit”. Famous corners such as Spa’s Eau Rouge and Monaco’s Casino are featured, but there’s nothing from Melbourne’s Albert Park track. There’s also some gumpf from Mobil about their oil and the stresses it goes through during the lap.

A free plug for Mobil then, but it’s an interesting enough clip.

Golf GTI wins another award – but what’s the point?

Volkswagen’s Mk5 Golf GTI is a bloody good car. I know this not only because the motoring world has barely stopped praising the car since its 2004 launch, but also because I have one in my garage. However, the GTI’s latest accolade, 2008 Drive Car of the Year (Best Performance Car Under $60,000), has to be the most irrelevant the car has ever won. Why? Go down to your local Volkswagen dealer and try to order a new GTI and see how far you get.

Sure, you can get a new Pirelli model, but with an extra 22kW, factory body kit and garish seats, that’s not the same car the Drive judges awarded. You could get lucky and find a dealer with a GTI in stock, but the factory has stopped making them, so ordering one to your specification is impossible.

The good news is the outgoing GTI can still hold it’s head high. Good for the dealer stock still remaining, and during the current financial doom and gloom, demand for the GTI in the used car market may hold firm. That said, while we’re waiting for the Mk6 Golf GTI, I just wish Drive was singing the praises of a new Volkswagen model…

…the Scirocco, for example.

Top Gear – Series 12, Episode 5

Top Gear - Series 12, Episode 5

Brutal mingers, Milli Vanilli exhaust tips and RM Williams boots. These were just some of the things featured on this week’s episode.

Jeremy opened the show by pitting the BMW M3 Sedan against the Lexus IS-F (with Milli Vanilli exhaust tips). The upshot? Lexus done good, but not as good as BMW.

The Porsche Panamera (the brutal minger) copped a bit of a ribbing during the news segment, while Richard (in his RM Williams boots) and Jeremy gave the Cool Wall some new life.

There was a bus race to test which would be the best buses for London’s public transport. I have to say, watching a double decker bus corner on two-wheels was almost as cool as seeing a bendy bus powerslide.

Kevin McCloud, from Grand Designs, was the guest. Described as an “eco-mentalist”, he has a dark secret and some raw driving talent. Nice work!

The feature clip closed out the show and saw Richard driving a 1968 Ferrari Daytona from Portofino, Italy to St Triopez, France. James tagged along in a fancy boat.

Check this out, this is the coolest!

From BMW-web.tv (via YouTube) is this clip of BMW’s awesome looking BMW Product Navigator. It is a touch-screen marvel that will attract kids and and adults alike, as the user specifies their own BMW in an instant, to see images and footage of their car in motion on an accopanying wall-mounted plasma display. Those who were amazed at the touch screen graphics used by the major networks during the US Election will appreciate this. And anyone who has seen the latest James Bond flick, Quantum of Solace, and scoffed that their touch screen interface at MI6 headquarters was out of this world will have to think again.

Volkswagen Golf Plus gets accidental release

The Golf Plus is a kind of cool part Tiguan-part Golf thing that isn’t available in Australia. The facelifted version, based on the revised MkVI, is due for release in a few days at the Bologna Motor Show. But, as is often the case, there has been a bit of a leak. Brochures for the new Golf Plus were put on the Volkswagen stand at the Essen Motor Show. Oops! And, with the magic of the internet now everyone has a copy. Follow the autoblog link below for more.

Along with the Scirocco, put this down as another model Volkswagen Australia should bring down under.

The new MINI Cabrio

R57 MINI Cooper S Cabrio

This is the new MINI Cabrio. Shown here in 128kW turbo Cooper S guise, the roofless MINI will strike a fashionable pose at your favourite café—if you’re into that sort of thing.

The R57 Cabrio will reach Australian shores in the second quarter of 2009. It features a completely redesigned rollover hoop system, and the slightly awkward rear hinges from the old model have been deleted, resulting in a cleaner design for the hatch compartment. In the unlikely event that you do decide to roll your new MINI Cabrio, the rollbars will activate in a mere 150 milliseconds. Providing you protection when you need it, and staying out of your vision when you don’t. Neat, huh.

The automatic soft top roof opens in 15 seconds and can be activated at speeds up to 30km/h. Other features include standard Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) across the range, hands-free Bluetooth  phone capability (including iPhone), MP3 player compatibility and, oddly enough, an automatic air conditioning system that adjusts accordingly even when your roof is down.

In an ever so MINI way, there is also an optional Always-Open Timer that sits next to the tachometer on the steering column. This little dial keep tally of the number of hours your MINI Cabrio’s roof has been down. Fair enough, I suppose.

BMW confirms 330d sedan for Australia

BMW 330d Sedan

BMW Australia has confirmed news that the 330d will be available here in 2009. While exact dates and pricing are yet to be confirmed, the all new 180kW 6-cylinder diesel will be in showrooms sometime after April.

The use of turbo technology gives the oil burner a massive 550Nm of torque, available from just 1750rpm. The 330d will be available with a 6-speed automatic transmission only and the economic fuel consumption of 6.8l/100km will see the car benefit from a higher $75,000 Luxury Car Tax threshold.

2008 MINI CHALLENGE – Round 7 wrap up




Last weekend’s MINI CHALLENGE racing at Tasmania’s Symmons Plains raceway had plenty of action at both ends of the field. Up front, former Tasmanian Paul Stokell had a dominant weekend winning all three races. However, at the back of the tightly packed field UBER-STAR driver Jason Akermanis got off to an eventful and rather embarrassing race debut by rolling his car on the warm up lap (see clip above).

Akermanis, often a human headline in the world of AFL, certainly attracted plenty of attention. Both he and Stuart Appleby had set solid qualifying times for Race 1, although both were starting from the rear of the grid. Appleby’s time was 1.3 seconds off pole, while ‘Aka’ was 1.5 seconds from the front. But Akermanis didn’t see any race action after his roll on the parade lap, although he did return for Sunday’s two races after a mammoth effort from the UBER-STAR team. The crew worked until 4am to have his car ready and to Akermanis’ credit he finished race 3 with his head held high, setting a best lap time of 1:03.7. His time compares well with the fastest lap from the race, of 1:02.9, set by former Bathurst winner Jason Bargwanna.

But it was Stokell creating all the headlines at the front of the pack, finally bringing an end to Bargwanna’s great run of consecutive victories by stringing together three of his own. Stokell’s success created the biggest impact on the series leader board as well, moving him into second position behind Neil McFadyen.
