Volkswagen Mk6 Golf GTD

Those bemoaning the lack of a performance diesel in the new Golf VI range need bemoan no longer. Volkswagen has just released details of the new Golf GTD. Powered by a 125kW common-rail diesel the GTD is good for a 8.1 second 0-100km/h sprint and has a top speed of 222km/h.

The official fuel consumption figure is just 5.3 litres per 100 kilometres and the car emits just 139g of CO2 per kilometre. Turbo diesel power means it is the in gear acceleration provided by the 350Nm of torque on offer that make car’s like this a hoot to drive.

Similar to the GTI, there may be some disappointment that the performance numbers aren’t up on the old model, the GT Sport (tested by AUSmotive in May 2008).

Save the red pinstripe of the GTI, the performance diesel shares the front bumper and grille treatment from its hot-hatch sibling. The GTD is fitted with 17 inch Seattle alloys and is available with a 6 speed transmission in either manual or DSG specification. Like the GTI it has tartan inspired cloth covered seats and a flat bottomed three spoke steering wheel.

The Golf GTD will have its first public appearance at the Auto Mobil International in Leipzig on 5 April. No word on Australian availability from VW Australia just yet, but expect first or second quarter of 2010.

Cayenne GTS Porsche Design Edition 3

That’s an awfully long name for an awful lot of car. “P-car” purists have bemoaned the Cayenne since its inception and I’m not sure this new limited release is likely to do anything to restore their faith. However, as Porsche claims, if the Cayenne helps put big overweight bums on seats, then there’s a reason to make a big overweight Porsche.

Only 1000 Cayenne GTS Porsche Design Edition 3 will be released worldwide and for your money you get exclusive Lava Grey paintwork with a few fancy decals. You also get, importantly, a 405bhp 4.8 litre V8 fitted with six-speed Tiptronic S transmission featured as standard (what, no PDK!). That’s enough to take this porker from 0-100km/h in 6.5 seconds, before reaching a top speed of 250km/h.

As the name suggests, the Design Edition 3 follows in the footsteps of the Cayman S Porsche Design Edition 1 and the Boxster S Porsche Design Edition 2. How come no 911 version, I wonder? UK pricing for the Cayenne iteration comes in a shade under £65,000 (AU$136,ooo). And, further making light of taking money from those who can most afford to give it away are the matching Design Edition 3 watch and luggage. You also get a free track day at Silverstone for good measure.

AUSmotive celebrates first birthday

AUSmotive.com

One year ago today AUSmotive.com went live. It only seems like a few months really. Quarter on quarter traffic growth has been very consistent (see graph below) and for a sole contributor website with no previous blogging experience I’m pleased with the way things are going.

Who knows what the future holds for AUSmotive, but I hope this birthday is the first of many, many more.

Peter Wherrett 1936-2009

Peter Wherrett 1936-2009Pioneering motoring journalist Peter Wherrett has died of cancer. He was 72.

Wherrett is best known for his work with ABC TV where he hosted the programs Torque and Marque during the 1960s and 1970s. He also worked for the Sydney Morning Herald and Wheels magazine.

In 1967 he established the Peter Wherrett Advanced Driving School which he ran until 1980 when he sold his interests to Peter Finlay.

Wherrett was not without controversy, with a drink driving offence in the mid 1980s and confessions of being a cross-dresser.

He is responsible for my earliest memories of motoring journalism with Torque, which has no doubt provided inspiration for many who have followed his path.

Peter Wherrett is survived by his two children, Steven Wherrett and daughter Jane Whitburn, along with six grandchildren.

Volkswagen’s new Golf GTI opens its order book

Volkswagen’s new Golf VI GTI is now available for order in Europe, with German deliveries to commence in the coming days. The rest of Europe has to wait until after Easter before GTI orders start being filled. For Australian readers, nothing concrete yet from Volkswagen Australia, other than a tease that the car might be here before the year is out.

The production car remains faithful the show car presented at last year’s Paris Motor Show. The sixth generation GTI is powered by a revised 2-litre TSI turbo charged four cylinder engine. Volkswagen claims this is the fastest, sharpest and greenest standard GTI model yet.

Engine power is rated at 155kW, a modest increase of 8kW from the Mk5 GTI. Torque is still rated at 280Nm, although engine tweaks including modified pistons and piston rings, an improved oil pump, new induction system and a high-pressure fuel pump, mean peak torque is now available from as low as 1700rpm. VW claim the new GTI, with 6 speed manual transmission, can accelerate from rest to 100km/h in 6.9 seconds, or 0.3 seconds faster than the previous model.

Also new in the Mk6 GTI is an electronic differential called XDS. In short this system adapts the car’s ESP system to reduce wheelspin. Electronic limited slip diffs are not always so successful, so it will be interesting to see what Volkwagen’s engineers have come up with.

The new GTI rides 22mm lower and the front and 15mm lower at the rear than its more conservative cousins in the the Golf range. The GTI’s model specific suspension set up employs a familiar multi-link from the previous generation. However, the addition of a new Adaptive Chassis Control system gives the driver more flexibility with the ability to choose from three settings; normal, comfort or sport mode. The system uses pneumatically controlled damper units and as well as altering suspension behaviour it can also controls sharpen steering and improve throttle response.

Apart from that, and the GTI-specific body kit, of course, the rest of the GTI’s features are similar to the entry level Golfs. That means seven airbags as standard and a five star Euro NCAP crash rating.

Autocar.co.uk have published an initial drive review of the GTI and here are a few of their comments:

“The first thing that hits you is just how flexible this latest Golf GTi engine is; it’s as happy on the autoroute behind Nice as it is screaming up the snaking roads leading into the surrounding mountains.

“At lower speeds the electro-mechanical steering can sometimes feel over-assisted; the apparent lightness is aimed at aiding manoeuvrability around town. Where it really shines is out on the open road, where it weights up progressively and proves impressively direct as you tip in to tightening corners.

“A good part of the precision within the steering can be traced to the adoption of an optional electronic differential for the first time, for Volkswagen has done an excellent job of quelling torque steer without resorting to a mechanical limited-slip diff.”

Some say he likes lurking in office buildings and that he moonlights as a janitor. All we know is… Google Street View has delivered some Top Gear action by spotting The Stig lurking in an office at Westway, Hammersmith in London. According to Top Gear’s website the Google Maps find is actually the TG offices. This, then, presumably, is the actual Stig. Or it could all be a load of cobblers. Either way, it’s pretty funny.

F1 teams throw ‘must win’ system out the door

Last week news emerged that the 2009 Formula One driver’s title would be decided by the driver with the most number of wins, irrespective of points scored. It did seem a bit odd that this decision was announced so close to the start of a new season. It was odd for a few other reasons too, but now it doesn’t matter as the F1 teams have spoken as one and had the idea shelved until the 2010 season, at least.

In a classic case of he-said-she-said it is understood that the FIA was told the teams were in agreement with the ‘winner takes all’ plans only to later find out this was not actually the case. Brilliant management there!

The full statement from the FIA:
“On 17 March, the FIA World Motor Sport Council unanimously rejected FOTA’s proposed amendment to the points system for the Formula One Drivers’ Championship. The ‘winner takes all’ proposal made by the commercial rights holder (who had been told that the teams were in favour) was then approved.

“If, for any reason, the Formula One teams do not now agree with the new system, its implementation will be deferred until 2010.”

BMW cans Z4M … boooo!

According to iMotorMag BMW has succumbed to carmageddon and shelved plans for a Z4M.

They will, however, offer an M Sport pack that consists of a body kit (a la 135i) and an ECU reflash to liberate a few more ponies from the 3 litre twin turbo. Presumably this will translate to other cars in the BMW range with the same ebgine, too. Power is said to jump to 326bhp.

Audi R15 TDI claims debut win at 12 Hours of Sebring

Audi’s new R15 diesel LMP racer has completed a perfect debut by taking out the Sebring 12 hour in the US over the weekend. The successor to the all conquering R10 set a new laps record, crossing the start/finish line 383 times and bettering the previous record by 13 laps.

The R15 is powered by a 5.5 litre V10 turbo diesel and is said to be good for a very handy 600bhp and a spine tingling 1050Nm of torque.

Audi’s #2 car, driven by Dindo Capello (Italy), Tom Kristensen (Denmark) and Allan McNish (Scotland), finished the race just over 22 seconds ahead of the Pegeout 908. The win marked Audi’s ninth victory at the Sebring event. The #1 R15 TDI took third place on the podium. A great result for the Audi Sport Team which arrived at the race with a less than ideal preparation, Dr Wolfgang Ullrich, Head of Audi Motorsport, said “this is a great result for a brand new car which came to Sebring with less mileage under its wheels than we had planned. We’ve seen not only the fastest 12-hour race in Sebring history, but also one of the most exciting with so many lead changes and a very tight battle between Audi and Peugeot.”

The 12 Hours of Sebring was Audi’s dress rehearsal for the 24 Hours of Le Mans, which takes place on the weekend of 13-14 June. Audi will be taking three R15 TDI prototypes to the event and will be testing their backsides off until the race weekend.
