Aston Martin Rapide – first high res image

Aston Martin Rapide

Following the release of four computer generated images in February comes this first official image release of the Aston Martin Rapide in production form. You can click on the image above to load a wallpaper sized 2000px super image.

Dr Ulrich Bez, Aston Martin CEO, claims this is the “world’s most elegant four-door sports car”. That’s a big claim, but one that can be taken seriously. Of course, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but you can be sure you will have many admirers if you have a Rapide parked in your driveway.

The car is due for a full public reveal in late 2009 (Frankfurt maybe?) with the first customer deliveries scheduled for early 2010.

It has taken some time for the 2006 concept to reach maturity, and it is clear that Aston has high hopes for their new baby. Dr Bez states, “Rapide will exceed expectations to deliver elegance and practicality in a form that will allow driving enjoyment and comfort beyond anything that exists today.

“The Rapide will exist in a class all of its own, a true Aston Martin with the high performance and dynamic excellence that defines the brand, and a luxurious sporting grand tourer without equal.”

Honda FCX Clarity – World Green Car of the Year 2009

Honda FCX Clarity

Jamie Lee Curits is doing her bit to end the reign of the Toyota Prius as the darling of Hollywood celebs. Her cause was given a huge boost after the Honda FCX Clarity was named the World Green Car of the Year. The announcement was made last week at the WCOTY awards in New York.

The Hydrogen powered Clarity appears to be the way of the future, effectively making electric-powered cars redundant. Whether this takes place or not is a different proposition altogether, of course. For a great piece on the FCX, check out Series 12 of Top Gear.

Fiat 500 – World Car Design of the Year 2009

Fiat 500 - World Car Design of the Year 2009

The World Car of the Year Awards were announced last week at the New York International Auto Show. You have already read about the Golf VI claiming the overall WCOTY gong, but there were a few extra chocolates handed out as well. The Fiat 500 was the recipient of some goodness when it was declared the 2009 World Car Design of the Year.

The Fiat was adjudged ahead of the Citroën C5 Sedan / C5 Tourer and the Jaguar XF.

Roberto Giolito, Fiat’s Head of Design said, “Italian design has often been a step ahead of future trends in the automotive world and our latest models, spearheaded by the Fiat 500, are an expression of ‘practical beauty’, which is what the world expects of Italian cars. We will continue to work untiringly on innovative design, and endeavour to combine the best of the future with the historical, cultural and industrial identity of the Fiat brand.”

No SEX please, we’re Saudi Arabian

Saudis ban 'lewd' number plates

Saudi Arabian authorities have banned vanity plates which it deems offensive. Personalised plates are popular with Saudi youth and as many as 90,000 “lewd” plates will have to be replaced.

Included in the list of banned custom plates, are “SEX”, “BAD” and “ASS. Curiously, “USA” is at the top of the prohibited listing. “BAR” is deemed offensive because of the Kingdom’s alcohol prohibition laws.

Of course, this ban doesn’t affect females of Saudi Arabia for the simple fact they are banned from driving full stop. They have to make do with wearing T-shirts emblazoned with number plates to make their point.

Don’t try this at home

A publicity stunt has gone horribly wrong for Renault at Dubai Autodrome. A drag race bewteen a Renault R28 F1 car and a Ford GT40 ended abruptly when the driver of the F1 car lost control and smashed into the pitwall.

Middle Eastern Rally Champion Mohammed Ben Sulayem, was at the wheel of the Renault R28 and remained in the car for some time after the incident. However, it is believed he has escaped serious injury.

You can see amateur footage of the incident in the YouTube clip above and then delight at the irony of the song being played in the background at the end.

More on the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG ‘Gullwing’

Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG ‘Gullwing’

Following last month’s official announcement of the SLS AMG ‘Gullwing’, Mercedes-Benz has released these teaser images of the car. While only sketch drawings of the exterior have been revealed, three interior shots of the car have been released.

The concept drawings look damn spectacular it has to be said. Something we can’t always say about more recent designs from Benz. Here’s hoping the final body work maintains the drama shown above.

Just in case you’ve forgotten, the SLS will be powered by a 420kW V8. The car will employ a 7-speed double clutch box and they say it will accelerate from 0-100km/h in 3.8 seconds and will have a top speed of 315km/h.

SeeMe automated warning system

Swedish company Amparo has just started UK trials of a potentially life saving technology aimed at raising awareness of school children near public roads. The system, called SeeMe, uses a transponder attached to a school bag which will trigger solar-powered road side warning lights when a child with the SeeMe system in operation is near by.

The system is already in full use across Sweden and studies there show that when SeeMe is activated drivers will decrease their speed by up to 13km/h in a 70km/h speed zone. That doesn’t sound like much, but would bring a big saving in emergency stopping distances.

Current UK trials are taking place in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, where two school children were killed in 2008.

“Our experience is that the most dangerous situation is when the child is walking to or from the school or school bus, either on their way to the bus stop, crossing the road, or in connection with getting on or off the bus” says Leon Nilsson, COO of Amparo Solutions. “In each case the SeeMe® equipment can make a significant difference, in winter or summer, night or day.”

The SeeMe system appears to be a great use of simple technology that could make a significant impact on increasing road safety for all.

Sackings force Karmann to file for bankruptcy

Karmann badge

Carmageddon has claimed yet another scalp with news filtering through that body specialists Karmann filed for bankruptcy overnight.

Best known for their stunning Volkswagen Karmann Ghia coupé, built from 1955–1974, the German coach-builders currently supply components and body work for convertible models to the likes of Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, MINI and Volkswagen. Contracts with Audi and Mercedes-Benz have either expired, or are coming to an end, and will not be renewed.

While Karmann doesn’t have huge debt hanging over its head, it is suffering the flow on effect from a worldwide drop in automotive sales. Many of its customers are planning to bring work back in-house, leaving Karmann in the lurch.

The company has plans to undertake a massive restructure that would see around 50% of its workforce laid off. This would require redundancy payments for over 2,000 workers, and it is these payments that Karmann cannot afford. By taking the voluntary bankruptcy route it is hoped a buyer can be found and the payments to workers can be saved.

Lets do the time warp again

Golf VI GTI

The Volkswagen Golf VI has been criticised for being too small a jump from the previous generation V. For motoring enthusiasts, the relevance of this criticism will hold strongest in the hero GTI model. Seeing as I was busy when the recent launch took place on the French Riveria we’ll have to make do with reading the thoughts of those who were there.

Drivers Republic are right up there in terms of holding credibility in the motoring hack segment. You can be assured that they will tell it like it is. As an unashamed GTI fan, I’m hoping they give the car a big thumbs up.

The above photo shows the lads didn’t hold back in putting the car through it’s paces. And the blacktop in which the car was tested also left nothing to chance, with a series of switchbacks and flowing curves.

So, is the new GTI a step forward, or a jump to the left? Find out for yourself…
