Volkswagen set to release Scirocco R at Wörthersee

Volkswagen Scirocco R

Breaking news courtesy of iMotor with information on a 265bhp/350Nm powered Scirocco R model. The hot ‘Roc will be revealed this weekend at the Wörthersee show Nürburgring 24 hour race.

The good news, as noted, is the addition of the Audi S3 engine to the sexy Scirocco. That means, bigger turbo, strengthened internals and high-pressure injectors, enough to boost power from the 2.0T four cylinder to around 200kW. The not so good news is that all that power will be driven through the front wheels only, with grip reliant on Volkswagen’s new XDS electronic diff, as seen in the Golf GTI. Six-speed manual and DSG transmissions will be available. The reworked body kit adds the required level of aggression, too.

Availability in Australia is uncertain at this stage, but let’s hope this is the model Volkswagen Australia needs to set the car apart from the GTI.

More detail and images on the Scirocco R will be added as it comes to hand.

Audi Q5 gets more enthusiastic

Audi Q5 Custom Concept

This is the Audi Q5 Custom Concept, an SUV hot rod that will make it’s debut at the 2009 Wörthersee Tour this weekend. Held in Austria this is the annual ‘GTI’ event for Volkswagen/Audi enthusiasts across Europe.

The Q5 Custom Concept gets the supercharged V6 TFSI from the S4 along with a custom paint scheme that adds flashed of red to help make the car go faster. That aim is also achieved by tweaking the V6 to produce a rather tidy 300kW. Audi reckons this will get the Q5 CC from rest to 100km/h in a staggering 4.4 seconds.

Audi will have 20 cars on show at Wörthersee, including the TT RS, R8 LMS and A1 Sportback concept.

There’s two extra pics and some press blurb from Audi after the jump.

Can’t wait for the new Golf GTI?

VW UK Golf GTI brochure

If you’re waiting for the new Golf GTI to arrive in Australia and can’t hold back any longer then our friends at Volkswagen UK can help you pass the time.

Included here are a selection of images from the new GTI brochure. Of course, if you are desperate for GTI info you won’t want to make do with these skanky images, you’ll want to download the brochure for yourself. Thanks to Volkswagen UK you can!

The brochure doesn’t reveal too many secrets and merely confirms that the standard 17″ Denver alloy wheels really are ugly (see first image after the jump). They looked bad enough on the Mk5 GTI, but they’re even worse on the sharper edged Mk6 Golf body. If aftermarket wheels don’t light your fire, the 18″ Monza alloys (pictured above) get the AUSmotive tick of approval. The difference are subtle, I agree, but the extra size and polished surface gives the wheel the edge it needs.

There’s still nothing official from Volkswagen Australia in regards to local availability. However, some Sydney dealers are accepting pre-orders now. They’re advising customers to expect delivery as early as September-October this year. I’ll be amazed if that happens, but we will see.

If you want some wallpaper images to smarten up your PC then check out the AUSmotive Mk6 GTI image gallery.

[Thanks to Tom for the tip.]

GFC says, ‘No Volkswagen BlueSport for you!’

Volkswagen Concept BlueSport

The Global Financial Crisis has seen Volkswagen temporarily shelve plans to put the svelte Concept BlueSport into production.

A report on GoAuto quotes a hesitant Christian Haacke, Volkswagen product communications manager, “It is a niche product and especially in crisis times like this it will be a challenge to come up with a volume we could require to earn money with it.”

However, there are signs of encouragement from Haacke, “The idea of a small two-seater sportscar has been around for a really long time and I hope that the Concept BlueSport will finally make it through the calculators.”

Indeed, Christian, let’s hope it does. The thought of a nimble mid-engined MX-5 rival from Volkswagen is sure to whet many an appetite. Sure, the 132kW diesel variant might not tickle everyone’s fancy, but you can be sure if this car does get made, the full complement of suitable drivetrains will be considered.

The possibility of the Volkswagen group’s silky smooth 2.0 litre turbo four cylinder in such a shell is a thought to treasure. Sadly, a thought is all it will be for now.

Porsche-Volkswagen merger talks stall

Porsche & Volkswagen logosThe supposedly happy merger talks between Porsche and Volkswagen have stalled before even making first gear.

An unnamed Volkswagen spokesperson has been quoted as saying, “we recognised at the end of the week that Porsche is lacking several fundamental conditions for the discussions.”

The saga is travelling on a seemingly neverending path of intrigue and the balance of power appears to see-saw by the day. About the only thing that does seem clear is that Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn looks set to be the big winner in the executive stakes. Well, for now.

Stay tuned for more news as it comes to hand.

Top Gear Australia – Series 2, Episode 2

Top Gear Australia - Series 2, Episode 2

A serviceable episode from the lads tonight. I’m yet to be convinced we can expect greatness from the locals, but episode 2 did provide solid entertainment.

The show opened with a piece on the HSV Clubsport R8, which quickly, and thankfully, took a turn for something that sounds truly mad. The brutes from Walkinshaw Performance have strapped a supercharger on the already well powered V8. The symphony of V8 grunt and supercharged torque was music to the ears of anyone who has enjoyed the delights of supercharger whine. The car is good for a mammoth 470kW apparently. Yikes! They ran the car twice on Top Gear Australia test track, first with bling 22 inch wheels, second with moderate bling 20 inch wheels. We all know the theory—lighter wheels are best for performance—but according to Stiggo the smaller 20 inch wheels with more forgiving rubber were over three seconds a lap quicker.

According to the sales data Australians bought more V8s than ever before in 2008. So much for the fuel crisis. This inspired Warren and Steve to build a couple of electric cars on a $3000 budget. Steve took charge of a lightweight Suzuki Mighty Boy, while Warren loaded up an HZ Kingswood wagon with a bunch of regular old car batteries. Steve’s nutball idea to power his car with four cordless drills sounded kind of fun, but it just didn’t work. There were some good laughs here, though.

In the middle of the episode, and from nowhere, it seemed, they fired up a Model T Ford. Fifteen million of Henry’s finest were sold back in the day, a figure that, amazingly, still sees the T in the top 10 selling cars of all time. They look like a bitch to drive, however!

One final challenge for James and Warren was a reverse race around Oran Park raceway. James was at the wheel of a Ford Territory, Warren in a Commodore. All mirrors and windows were covered over, with James relying solely on the Territory’s reverse camera and in-dash screen. While Warren had just the rear window to guide him through the course, littered with obstacles. Okay, so it wasn’t great viewing, but, again, it was good harmless fun.

Ian Moss picked up a (not so) fast car to burn his name in the road as tonight’s guest. He’s a pretty good subject, with some great tales to tell no doubt. But, he’s always been a shy bloke and Warren still has a way to go to put his subjects at ease. Even with his elbow resting on the window sill leading into the main straight, ‘Mossy’ was able to set the second quickest time around the track.

Another nod in the direction of the film and production crews who, so far in Series 2, continue to get the ‘Top Gear look’ just right.

The most expensive car in the world

Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa

This stunning 1957 Ferarri 250 Testa Rossa can lay claim to being the world’s most expensive car after an anonymous bidder paid a world record auction price of €9 million (AU$16.2M). The winning bidder, bidding by telephone, boldly told the world ‘You know where you can stick your Global Financial Crisis’ as he, or maybe she, outbid three others. The auction was run by RM Auctions and took place at Maranello last weekend.

This sale beats the previous world record for a car sold at auction by €2 million. That car, a 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California, was bought by UK radio personality Chris Evans. Shame he’s such a wanker.

Anyway, back to the beautiful 250 Testa Rossa, there were just 22 of these curvaceous machines made and the one on offer had been raced extensively through the Americas.

Highlighting that there is still plenty of folks ready to flash some cash was a rare Ferrari 330 P4. The car was passed in at €7.25 million, in excess of the previous world record. That’s just being greedy, don’t you think.

Extra pics and a full press statement, including background on the 250 Testa Rossa can be read after the jump.

Update 19 May: A tiny teaser about the experience of driving this car has been posted on Jalopnik.

MINI E enters the blogosphere

MINI E

It is with regret that AUSmotive HQ won’t be able get its hands on the funky zero emission MINI E. Of course, this is due to the simple fact we live in the wrong hemisphere. However, US motoring website Edmunds.com has secured its place in MINI E history by coming up trumps in MINI’s selection process.

They will take delivery of their car next month, so we can expect some decent first hand reports from June onwards. Until then recharge your battery by reading some background info on the electric powered MINI.

MINI to hit the Roadster at Frankfurt

MINI Speedster rendering

The latest MINI Speedster speculation suggests an official reveal at the Frankfurt Motor Show this September, before going into production in 2010. Well, that’s the goss according to French publication L’Automobile.

If you’ve missed the news on the sleek looking MINI it is believed to be based on the R57 Cabrio platform. Except this time MINI will go all out chasing style by flicking the next to useless rear seats of the Cabrio altogether. But, it won’t be all smiling in the mirror at itself, as the Speedster will get on the scales, too, and shed some weight to help improve performance and handling further.

Apart from the computer renderings that’s about all the info that’s out there for now. Save the obvious guesses that the car will use Cooper S drivetrains, among others, and possibly the über JCW package as well. Sounds like fun!

2010 Opel Astra – official pics

2010 Opel Astra

As is always the case, once material has been leaked manufacturers are quick to get official images out and about. And Opel, showcasing their new Asrta, is no different. Included here are nine official pics (click on each one to load wallpaper sized versions) and a press statement from Vauxhall UK.

There’s still no interior pics, but Vauxhall says they will be released soon. The new Astra will make its public debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September and will go on sale shortly after.

As noted yesterday, I quite like the look of this new Astra. Although, while some, including Vauxhall, say it is inspired by its bigger brother, the Insignia, I say it’s a homage to its mid-size berthren. Or, in Gen-Y speak, its a mash up of current design cues.

There’s a bit of Mazda 3 in the lower front grille and C-pillar. There’s some Golf VI in the strong shoulder line. A bit of Audi A3 in the lighting treatment, especially at the front. And, oddly enough, some Nissan Murano in the rear hatch badge treatment. No matter, though, because as an overall result it gets the AUSmotive tick of approval.

Scirocco R20T hits the road

Volkswagen Scirocco R20T

Volkswagen are playing sneaky by testing the Scirocco R20T at the Nürburgring so close to the upcoming 24 hour race (21-24 May). They want us to think this car is part of the race program. However, with the power of the internet on our side we won’t be fooled by this quasi racecar look. The lack of roll cage and tweaked body kit indicate that this is likely to be a test mule for the über road going Scirocco.

Other giveaways include the larger rear hatch spoiler, tweaked lower rear bumper, featuring a new twin exhaust setup, and the racecar like front air dam. Would be nice if those wheels from the race team made it tofinal production too.

Of course, this also means the drivetrain for the über GTI is getting a run, seeing as it is highly likely both cars will be pretty close to identical under the skin.

Depending on who you believe power should be around the 200-220kW region and full public debuts are expected in September at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
