Ten reasons to visit the 2009 Goodwood Festival of Speed

2009 Goodwood FoS preview

It is unlikely that any motoring fan needs convincing to go to an event like the Goodwood Festival of Speed, but that hasn’t stopped the FoS PR team from reminding us what a great line up they have in store for 2009.

The event runs next week (3-5 July) and if you’re lucky enough to be going here’s a few of the names you will see—Sir Jackie Stewart, Sir Stirling Moss, Mick Doohan, Mark Webber, Jenson Button, Lewis Hamilton, Walter Röhrl, Sebastien Loeb plus many more.

Manufacturers have been increasing their stake at Goodwood in recent years and this year will see serious involvement from the likes of Audi, Bugatti, Lexus, MINI, Porsche and others.

Classic cars are another great reason to attend the FoS and this year the event will be headlined by the legendary Porsche 917.

Top Gear Australia – Series 2, Episode 8

Top Gear Australia - Series 2, Episode 8

Tonight saw the conclusion of the second series of Top Gear Australia and if I reflect back to my notes from the same point at Series 1 I have to conclude that forward steps have been taken by the crew at SBS.

The cinematography and post production has taken big steps forward, certainly, although there is still some work remaining to ensure the results reach a consistently high level.

James Morrison, used more sparingly than I expected, has been a solid replacement for Charlie Cox. He can, however, come across a little too smooth. Also, to make the inevitable Top Gear UK comparison, you never get the feeling that he is prepared to lay it on the line and say what he really thinks about a car.

Steve’s enthusiasm can be OTT, but, equally, that is his most enduring feature. He needs to find a balance, and fast! Warren, for me, is still the show’s best performer. That either tells you a fair bit about the show, or you’ll think I have no idea. Or perhaps a bit of both.

Tonight’s episode was a solid 7 out of ten, much like the series overall. Steve’s GTHO piece was good, but lacked punch. James and Warren’s luxo-saloon segment had quite a few holes in its review of the technology on offer, inasmuch as a lot of the technology in the Lexus 600 is also available on the Mercedes-Benz S Class. Not to mention on “lesser” cars such as the Volkswagen Golf. Yet, this didn’t rate a mention in the review. Odd. So too the reason for putting a BMW X6 twin turbo V8 around the test track. Where was the context? Well done to Gyton Grantley, though, for setting a new benchmark time for the celeb segment. It would be nice if the cross promotion for SBS took a more of a backward seat when selecting guests, however.

The ingredients for Top Gear Australia are there, but the viewer is left with a feeling that the show could be better. Perhaps one needs to evaluate the show differently now, but the fact it is a Top Gear franchise makes it hard to do. The consistently excellent UK series ensures the bar remains high. No word yet on the production of Series 3 for the local lads. If it happens, let’s hope further improvements are made. Or, maybe, as hard as it is to do, comparisons to the UK show need to stop.

Chris Atkinson to star in MINI Challenge

Chris Atkinson - MINI Challenge Uber Star

Ex-World Rally Championship regular Chris Atkinson will be driving MINI’s Uber-Star racecar at the next round of the Australian MINI Challenge, the inaugural Townsville race, on 10–12 July.

Forming part of the support program for the V8 Supercars, the Townsville round will be taking place on a new 2.87km street circuit. The course looks to have a good mix of high speed and flowing corners, the latter will suit the MINIs very well.

The Townsville round will also see another first for the MINI Challenge—an optional twin driver format. The format will introduce a 60 second minimum compulsory pit-stop for a driver change. You can read more about that here.

Atkinson has been at a bit of a loose end this year since the demise of the Subaru World Rally Team. He has a role with the Citröen Junior Team, but that doesn’t provide the regular action a man of his talent and ability craves, so he is keen to trade the dirt for some closed circuit action.

“I’ve been hearing a lot about MINI Challenge and a lot about the new Townsville circuit, so when the chance came up to try them both out I didn’t hesitate,” he told MINI Challenge organisers.

He is not daunted by the change of technology either, “if anything my 4WD experience will help in the front wheel drive MINI car,” Atkinson believes, “sometimes there are a few parallels between 4WD and front wheel drive. I’ll have that on my side anyway and hopefully that compensates for my lack of consistent road racing experience.”

Atkinson has driven just two competitive closed circuit events, two very admirable enduro races, the Nürburgring 24 hour and the Bathurst 12 hour.

Stay tuned to AUSmotive for more MINI Challenge news as it comes to hand. If you missed the action form the last round at Symmons Plains, you can catch up with the TV highlights here.

Shannons car show at Federations Square

Free car shows at Melbourne’s Federation Square will become a regular sight with Shannons announcing a series of events running until the lead up to Christmas.

The Fed Square Car Club Showcase supported by Shannons will be held on the last Sunday of each month. The first event with a display of fabulous sporting cars from the 1920s and 1930s by the Vintage Drivers Club is scheduled for this Sunday (28 June). Next month around 50 Porsches from all eras will be on display (26 July) .

“This is an exciting concept which we really believe will catch the public’s imagination,” said Shannons reprasentative, Richard Sanders.

“We’re excited about working in with Federation Square, as each display will get a huge audience – both of enthusiasts and city visitors lucky enough to be in the area on each Sunday.”

The events are held in conjunction with a number of car clubs and future displays will showcase a huge variety of cars from the Thunderbird Owners Club of Australia (30 August), the Volkswagen Club of Victoria (27 September), the Triumph Sports Owners Association of Victoria (25 October) and the (Ford) Capri Car Club (29 November).

Do you want the good news, or the bad news?

The clip above features Jim McDowell, Vice-President of MINI US, being interviewed by CNBC about the news MINI will be opening 17 new dealerships across the United States over the next 18 months. That’s on the back of being just one of two companies in the US to increase sales over the course of 2008. Well, that’s the good news.

The bad news is that MINI has just been ranked last in the most recent JD Power survey on Initial Quality. Watch McDowell try and shift the focus with some very average analogies about loving your wife. A future in politics awaits, no doubt!

Audi R8 Spyder lapping the Nürburgring

Official confirmation of a release date for Audi’s R8 Spyder is no closer to being locked away. However, the 5.2-litre V10 rag top is not shying away from Nürburgring testing, as this video shows. The sight and sound of the 525bhp V10 powered R8 is one well worth watching.

E is for England

MINI E set for UK trial

The electric powered MINI E has just been approved for a UK-based trial, with cars expected to be on England’s roads before the end of the year.

BMW Group has been granted funding to implement the trial from the UK Government’s Technology Strategy Board which was seeking proposals for innovative research projects featuring ultra-low carbon vehicles.

The year long trial will monitor the real-world use of the electric MINI with the findings set to influence the future decisions for BMW’s low emissions technologies.

To do this a collaborative approach, led by BMW, will see a research consortium formed with the trials taking place around the South-East of England, including MINI’s home at Oxford.

Ensuring the MINI E truly is a zero emissions vehicle Scottish and Southern Energy will be coordinating recharging points across the trial area, drawing power from renewable sources.

For sale – Bugatti Veyron #001

Bugatti Veyron

With the Global Financial Crisis and all that hyper cars are selling for a mere portion of their true worth. Naturally, the exceedingly and obscenely wealthy are not even fazed by a minor correction like the GFC. And so it follows that the exceedingly expensive cars do not have their values affected by such trivial inconveniences.

At least, that’s the theory taken by the LA based Bugatti Beverly Hills dealership who have for sale the first Bugatti Veyron. That’s right, chassis #001 of 300 can be all yours. There’s not many cars where the ability to empty its fuel tank in just 12 minutes is a selling point. But for this example, with less than 650kms travelled, that’s just what the dealer has done.

Usually, if sir has to ask then sir can’t afford, but in the interests of passing on the information this Veyron can be all yours for a tiny US$2.4M or, even better, if you’re paying in Aussie dollars you can really impress you mates at the RSL by telling them you paid a cool $3M for your new runabout.

Top Gear – Series 13, Episode 1

Top Gear - 13x01 (Ferrari FXX)

They’re back! And with a cracking first episode, as well. No sign at all of budget cuts here, or in the series teaser at the start of the show.

The highlight, of course, was the supposed genuine revealing of The Stig. I think it is safe to assume that the person revealed may well have taken Stig duties for this episode. But that is all. Presumably he, or rather, Michael Schumacher, owns the Ferrari FXX that was featured on the show. Judging by the power lap time set (I won’t spoil it, but it is remarkable) it certainly appeared to be a Schumacher-esque performance.

Actually, something that wasn’t a Schumacher-esque performance was his interview with Jeremy. Sure, Schumi’s driving ability sets him apart from his modern day peers, but we saw more personality in a few minutes with Jez than we did in his entire F1 career. Maybe he’s not such a bad bloke after all.

The main feature was the London-Edinburgh race. Theoretically set in 1949 the boys took the roads, and tracks, with icons of their era—Richard riding a Vincent Black Shadow, James was in a Jaguar XK 120 and Jeremy in a majestic Peppercorn A1 steam engine. The winner was both unexpected and obvious at the same time. If you follow me.

In the middle of all that Jeremy tested a new Lotus Evora and gave it a very big thumbs up.

The News section looks to be as entertaining as always, too. Great to have them back!
