Fifth Gear review Mk6 Golf GTI

Fifth Gear tests the Mk6 Golf GTI

On last night’s episode of Fifth Gear (16×05) Jonny filed a review for the not so new in Europe, but yet to be released in Australia, Volkswagen Mk6 Golf GTI. Click on the image above to watch the clip at the official Fifth Gear website.

Back in 2004 when Jason Plato thrashed the Mk5 GTI around the Paul Ricard test track (see below) you came away with a great feeling for what the car was like.

This time, though, I don’t think Jonny has done the car justice. Which is a shame. Hopefully we see Tiff Needell or Jason Plato in the GTI before the series finishes.

Nissan GT-R’s 7:26.70 Nurburgring lap

Footage of the Nissan GT-R’s most recent “record” time has now made it on to YouTube. At the wheel is Nissan Chief test driver Toshio Suzuki and you can see clearly from the clip that he had a job on his hands, fighting what appears to be some pretty savage understeer at times. Check the work on the wheel at Aremberg (1:21 into the lap).

The speed after Aremberg on the downhill run into Fuchsröhre is amazing. Although, that speed did come at a cost with a pretty hairy moment at the first left hander into Adenauer Forst (1:40).

It’s a cracking lap, I trust you will enjoy watching it.

Audi A5 Sportback world premiere on 16 July?

Audi A5 Sportback spy shots

A couple of weeks ago an Audi A5 Sportback was spotted at the University of California San Diego. The car was on site for a photoshoot which lasted a few hours. Unsurprising, then, that the car was noticed by a few astute students. In fact, quite a comprehensive eye witness account from one of the students can be read at Fourtitude. The fortunate chap was given a front row seat too, being invited to take a seat inside the new saloon.

This is a bit of an educated guess, but I have a feeling we might be seeing a world premiere of this car on 16 July—the date of Audi’s official 100th birthday celebrations.

Why do I think that? Firstly it’s clearly an important date for the manufacturer, so much so that German chancellor Angela Merkel will be in attendance. Further to that, if you take a look at the Audi 100 Years microsite the text under ‘The party > The birthday’ section reads, “The guests in Ingolstadt can expect a world premiere on July 16: In front of the eyes of almost 2,500 guests of honour, Rupert Stadler, Chairman of the Board at Audi AG, will be unveiling a new Audi model.”

Sure, it could be the R8 V10 Spyder that makes its debut, or even this R8 mystery test mule. However, the A5 Sportback has been around the traps internally for some time now and the timing makes sense. Especially after the release of a teaser image and video that were published in mid June, or, one month to the day from Audi’s birthday event.

On the other hand, is the A5 Sportback worthy of a premiere at such a prestigious event? I guess we’ll find out next week.

Ferrari at the Goodwood Festival of Speed

Ferrari Scuderia Spider 16M at Goodwood FoS

Ferrari showcased three of its latest supercars in the Sunday Times Supercar Runs at the Goodwood Festival of Speed—the Ferrari California, the 599 GTB Fiorano with HGTE package, and the limited edition Scuderia Spider 16M. Under gorgeous blue skies throughout the weekend, Ferrari fans were thrilled by the distinctive growl and bark of the V8 and V12 engines scorching up the famous Goodwood hillclimb course.

In a remarkable demonstration of driving finesse and incredible agility, the Scuderia Spider 16M completed the 1.16 mile hillclimb in an incredible time of 59 seconds. After the jump you can watch a video of this astonishing drive (so astonishing in fact that a missed gear change has been captured as well!).

In addition to the vision of the 16M tearing it up the hillclimb are two videos of the California and one of the 599 GTB doing likewise. All can be enjoyed after the jump.

My generation

Gavin Green's MINI outback adventure

Forty-three years ago motoring journalist Evan Green caused a sensation when he became the first man to drive across Australia from east to west via the red centre. As if that wasn’t enough, Green then conquered the north-south route immediately afterwards. The car? An original, first generation Mini. The journey covered a staggering 19,000kms.

Now, a second generation Green has followed in his father’s tyre tracks by driving a second generation MINI Cooper, of course, along the east-west route. Gavin Green was joined by photographer Mark Bramley and mechanical support was supplied by BMW Group Australia Senior Technician Darryl Cook.

The trio covered over 6,600kms in 10 days with the only modification to the standard road going car being a strengthened sump guard.

Green enjoyed the experience, “I wanted to give a different perspective on MINI in its 50th anniversary year and my father’s journey in 1966 has long been something I’ve wanted to pay homage to. It was an emotional experience because crossing Australia in this way meant we had the opportunity to witness some awe-inspiring locations and people, all of which is captured in the stunning collection of images we now have from the journey.”

British Airways commissioned the expedition in honour of MINI’s 50th birthday this year. The feature article is in the current issue of the airline’s in flight magazine High Life. You can read the online version here.

Famous five

Pagani Zonda Cinque

The Pagani Zonda Cinque Roadster, just look at it! I doubt when Enid Blyton penned her well known kids books that she had a 678bhp Italian supercar in mind. But, such is the outrageous nature of the Zonda, that it could very well have been dreamed up by one of her audience.

The Zonda has always had a bit of fantasy about it, almost as if it is a child’s creation that found its way into a grown up’s world. Crazy curves and massive power make it all look a bit ungainly it has to be said. But somehow, a bit like Serena Williams, it all just works and the Zonda has etched its name into the history books as one of the most effective hypercars ever made.

Which brings us to the Cinque Roadster. As the name suggests just five examples have been thrown to the kiddies with the promise that they could do whatever they wanted to the already brilliant Zonda.

Some red crayon got spalshed about, you know, to make it go faster. Raw carbon fibre gets a pretty good airing. Just because it looks cool. And it has all been finished off with a lairy paint job and massive fat wheels.

In adult, that means the extra pace is courtesy of over 500kW and a plain greedy 780Nm supplied by the AMG enhanced Mercedes-Benz 7.3-litre V12. The carbon fibre helps reduce weight, and the 335mm rear wheels are there to give the driver at least some chance of taming the wild beast lurking behind.

No surprise, then, that all five models have already been sold. Global Financial Crises don’t exist in a child’s world.

Red Bull GP iPhone app

Red Bull Racing have recently launched a free app for the Apple iPhone. These YouTube clips, featuring a cheeky Mark Webber (kind of), give a pretty good intro as to what you can expect.

After mucking around with the app for a few minutes I have to say it is a must have for all F1 fans. Not only does it contain a bunch of photos, videos and stats for the Red Bull Racing F1 team, it also includes full qualifying and race results for all Grands Prix so far in 2009.

In addition to that the season points tally for drivers and constructors is all yours at a swipe of the screen. Also included are track layouts for all circuits on the 2009 F1 calendar.

Click here to launch the Red Bull GP page in iTunes.

Audi Mazda MINI Subaru VFACTS reports

New vehicle sales report – June 2009

FCAI banner

Despite much economic doom and gloom, June 2009 was the third highest selling month for new car sales in Australia’s history. A total of 102,847 vehicles were sold.

Around 45% of those sales were to business customers, proving beyond any doubt that the Government’s tax incentives fulfilled their role.

FCAI Chief Executive Andrew McKellar stated, “The surge in business sales is directly attributed to the Federal Government’s business tax break and these figures provide clear evidence that this has been a very effective policy measure.

“Our analysis indicates that the business tax break has led to an additional 10,000 vehicles being sold over the past three months. That is a 10 to 12 per cent boost to business sales and a five per cent increase for the total market.”

Despite a boom June overall sales figures for 2009, unsurprisingly, are below those recorded at the same time last year. Almost 90,000 fewer vehicles have been sold on a year to date basis, representing a figure of -16.1%.

However, there are some shining lights with Audi having its best month on record and one of the few manufacturers to be increasing sales in 2009. Overall sales are up 10% on 2008 figures.

Mazda also signed off on a record sales month, with the new Mazda3 proving a hit selling more cars in one month than ever before as buyers look to downsize.

Likewise MINI enjoyed a great month locking in its best results yet for orders taken in a single month since its relaunch in 2001.

Finally, Subaru had its best ever month for Impreza sales. This is a genuine surprise as the view at AUSmotive HQ is that the Impreza is a bit unsightly these days.

Lots of chest beating below from industry bodies and bragging manufacturers.

Audi thinks big at Goodwood

Audi monument at 2009 Goodwood Festival of Speed

In 2009 Audi is celebrating its 100th birthday. Making sure this anniversary doesn’t go unnoticed at this weekend’s Goodwood Festival of Speed Audi have installed this massive 35 metre monument.

The art installation features two cars at either end of the ‘swoosh’—the 1937 Auto Union streamliner and the new Audi R8 V10. It was designed by Gerry Judah who is appointed by Lord March each year to create a new sculpture for the featured marque.

“I wanted to design something iconic because this year is Audi’s 100th anniversary,” explains Judah. “I drew about 20 ideas and some had elaborate bridges with vaulted arches but somehow they didn’t have quite the right style. I then had a flash of inspiration and designed this ‘swoosh’ with a car at either end to represent Audi’s 100-year history.

“It’s made entirely of steel and although the design looks simple, it’s actually extremely complex, because the structure has to be rigid and completely balanced without the need for hundreds of supporting props.”

The sculpture weighs 40 tonnes and took about a month for 12 men to fabricate and install.
