BMW DCT on the outer already?

BMW DCT - dual clutch transmission

According to a report at BimmerFile the dual clutch transmission (DCT) offered by BMW may be discontinued due to poor take up. The cost to sales ratio makes the case for DCT difficult to support. ZF Friedrichshafen AG, manufacturer of Porsche’s PDK gearbox, predicts a long term market support for their dual clutch tranny is not sustainable.

Personally, I find it hard to see that BMW would drop their DCT after such a short run. But, I guess, if the market isn’t buying it, then there’s no point fighting a losing battle.

I don’t buy this. M-DCT has only been in one model (M3) for a year. BMW would be a bit premature to pull it. Then again, look at their F1 effort…

i sure hope bmw does not quit offering the dct transmission.i recently purchased a 335is with a dct. it works good ,but my real worry is what happens when my 4 year warranty ends and bmw does not have any connection with the maufacturer. sound like an expensive proposition.

I just recently had my 2011 335is in the shop for a transmission issue. I didn’t know what the problem was at the time I took it in and neither did they until they kept it for two weeks. The clutch had failed. Thank goodness it was still under warranty. It only had 38,750 miles! I was very disappointed and frustrated that this could happen “prematurely” to such a nice car. In the meantime, I was reading up on this issue and I wasn’t the only one this was happening to. It was indeed a common problem at such an early stage of mileage! Wow, and I thought BMW was “fool proof” – NOT. I also read that these repairs could run as much as $10.000! Of course that includes the $150/hr. repair costs. I feel like most people in this predicament – should I keep the car or ditch it and go with another European auto company or go Japanese. Japanese make great cars. Never had issues like this with the Japanese cars I’ve had in the past. Well at least not the big stuff like transmissions, engines, etc. I recommend purchasing the extended warranty for anyone who has a BMW. I have one but I’m afraid it won’t be long enough to last if these kinds of issues continue…..
