Mecedes-Benz Australia have today released pricing and specification details on their all new CLS class saloon range. The CLS still looks like a competently designed AU Falcon, something Ford couldn’t manage, with the attractive swooping hipline giving the big Benz it’s most distinguishing feature. As to be expected Mercedes have upped the ante on the electronic gadget front. LED lighting is used for rear tail lights and indicators, as well as in the often copied side mirror indicator repeaters. A revised steering wheel has also been introduced, but no word on whether it can be fitted with a diamond encrusted Benz roundel from factory. Other electronic specifications are best left to the press release, which reads:
“The CLS features the new NTG 2.5 telematics generation, whose high-performance componentry combines straightforward operation and logical menu navigation with flawless in-vehicle entertainment. Features include speed-sensitive volume control, a keypad for entering telephone numbers and radio frequencies, an MP3-compatible CD and DVD player, as well as a Bluetooth interface which can establish a wireless connection between a mobile phone and the vehicle’s hands-free system.
The standard-fitment COMAND (Cockpit Management and Data System) navigation comes with a high-resolution 6.5-inch colour display, LINGUATRONIC for audio, navigation and telephone calls, a music register for storing audio files, plus an SD memory card slot.”
You should be able to see the CLS range in your local dealership by the middle of the month and when you do you will discover that Australian buyers can still choose from three engine options. Sir may choose the CLS 350 with 200kW V6 for $143,900, he may also opt for the CLS 500 with a 285kW V8 at $182,400. But, if sir really wants to impress his mates at the country club, he will go straight for the $257,800 CLS 63 AMG with a boardroom busting 378kW (506hp). Let’s not forget the 630Nm of torque. That’s probably enough to remove Donald Trump’s hair piece. Maybe.
The CLS 63 AMG is fitted with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC transmission, that now incorporates a function which blips the throttle automatically during downshifts. Kind of like you get on a $40K DSG equipped Golf GTI, I guess. One thing is certain, the big AMG V8, capable of completing the 0-100 dash in 4.5 seconds, will sound like an angry, angry wildebeast.
