Autocar names top five road tests

Steve Sutcliffe, Autocar

Steve Sutcliffe from Autocar presents the top five cars from a database of 5000 road tests (video available after the break). On the list they have included an original 1959 Mini, a 1961 Jaguar E Type, a 1981 Golf GTI, a 1994 McLaren F1 and a 2010 Porsche 911 GT3 RS.

In the first recap, featuring the Mini, it’s interesting when Sutcliffe includes a couple of lines from the 1959 test; a shame, really, he didn’t do that for the other four cars.

Overall, it seems like a reasonable enough list, if a bit skewed towards British engineering. But, Autocar is a British mag after all. So, what would cars would you put in your top five?

The GT3 RS being there is well deserved, and the achievement is even more credible in a sea of British cars as you pointed out.

Other than the GT3RS, my top 5 would include E30 M3 in there somewhere. And M3 CSL. And 2.7RS. Ok fine, I will include a UK car – McLaren F1.

I reckon the Mini is a fair selection. The Mk1 GTI, as well, obviously. And the McLaren F1 definitely.

After that I’d probably add the Lambo Miura and a 911 of some sort, I guess. If not, the F40, but only because I lusted after one so badly as a kid.

Will be interesting to see if they would still rate the GT3 RS so highly in a few years time.

the latest rs is one of the best cars they have ever made. hopefully they will bring out the 4.0 litre version, which will be an instant classic for sure if the gt1 engine is retained.

I know it’s not a road car, but the review that the late, great, Russell Bulgin wrote after he drove a Simtek F1 car in about 1995 remains one of the greatest pieces of automotive journalism I’ve ever read, probably only surpassed by the famous Jenks article (more like a short novel) about his ride as a navigator in the Mille Miglia.

MickyD, the piece may have been good, but it is a freaking Simtek! If it was a Ferrari or McLaren then yeah include it in the top 5. Lol

Beano, 4 litre RS has been signed off with basically the RSR Mezger. This will be the very last 997 variant before long wheel base 911.
