VIDEO: Mk7 Golf R gets some Ring time

Volkswagen Golf R prototype

The next-gen Volkswagen Golf R has been seen lapping the Nürburgring and it looks like a showroom release shouldn’t be too far away.

Expect it to be heavily based on the new Audi S3, which means it should be running the latest Haldex all-wheel drive system. Power from the 2.0 litre turbo EA888 engine in the Mk7 Golf R should go close to matching the S3’s 221kW. Likewise the peak torque figure of 380Nm. That represents improvements of 33kW/30Nm compared with the Australian spec Mk6 Golf R.

Kerb weight should be down around 60kg or so compared to the old model and improvements in power to weight ratio should see the 0–100km/h take a smidge over five seconds.

With the new differential in the GTI one wonders if the AWD version is worth the investment any more. It was questionable in previous generations, particularly in the R32 days (although that engine note sold the car for me) but now it might be bordering on irrelevant.

I’d like to see them take the GTI in a new direction and offer a lighter more extreme version rather than just dialling up the engine and adding AWD. Of course now that I’ve said that VW will prove me wrong by doing something clever with the AWD system and making this car sing.

Can’t wait for the lightweight carbon edition GTI to come out (editoin 40). Will be a ripper of a car no doubt!
AWD only good in the wet these days seriously, I drive a Scirocco R and the wife drives a Golf R and I can tell you the Scirocco is much more spirited and enjoyable to drive!
