Dan Prosser from Evo magazine presents a very intriguing challenge here by pitting a Porsche 911 Carrera GTS against a BMW i8 on the track.
We’ll let the cat out of the bag early, the i8 couldn’t match the 911 for outright lap times. In fact, it’s not even close. But can the i8 match the 911 for laughs and entertainment? Beyond that, is the i8 a serious dynamic competitor for the 911?

No, the i8 was never going to come anywhere near the GTS for speed, due to the tyres and the lower power output. But on the road, the i8 has more than enough power, and is such an entertaining drive at the limit when you take it to your favourite twisties that I found it hard to fault as a performance car. And when you are done, just put it into electric mode while you drive silently into the city. It’s a marvellous thing this i8.
That snap shot of the two cars sideways makes it look like the i8 has tyres of an appropriate width. Wider wheels with a different offset would do wonders for the stance. I love that the car looks like a concept car.
