Lewis Hamilton’s title defence will start in Australia in mid-March and Australian viewers will be able to see it all live in high definition on Fox Sports.
In news announced today Fox Sports has signed a five-year agreement which will see it broadcast live every practice session, every qualifying session and every race, starting with the Australian Grand Prix on 12 March.
Understandably the top brass at Fox Sports are very pleased with themselves with and have confirmed Australia will take on the Sky Sports feed.
“We have reached an extraordinary affiliate agreement with Sky to deliver through Fox Sports the same incredible Formula 1 coverage which is provided by Sky Sports in the UK,” confirmed Patrick Delany, Fox Sports CEO.
Meanwhile, Delany’s boss, Foxtel CEO, Richard Freudenstein, has gone into overdrive promoting his new product.
“Not only will fans see all the races live but we will add unrivalled behind the scenes experiences and the most expert commentary available,” Freudenstein said. “Fans of motor racing will be thrilled with what they can see if they subscribe to Foxtel’s sports package.”
That means Formula 1 will be included in the regular sports package which is a $25 per month add on over the compulsory $25 basic package. A high definition Foxtel receiver is a further $10 per month, bringing the total outlay to $60 per month.
Viewers unable or unwilling to sign up to pay television can still watch F1 on free-to-air on the Ten Network. Similar to the BBC/Sky deal in the UK, Ten will broadcast 10 of the races live (simulcast with Fox Sports) with delayed highlights packages for the remaining races.
You can see a calendar below listing the races the Ten Network will show live.

I cant wait!
What does “delayed highlights packages” mean? Does it mean that we won’t see the complete race on free to air?
I don’t have foxtel, and have no interest in getting it. Being on a drip feed for limited events means I’ll probably lose interest and lose touch. Exactly what happened with WRC.
Bye bye F1, bye bye V8 stupidcars
Hey Robbo, you can come to my house and watch.
And FOM wonders why TV audiences are falling! Looks like I’ll have to bend over and take one from Uncle Rupert.
The home of big event Motorsport. 👎
@MAD Always
My understanding from the BBC is that they show a 75 minute highlight package of the races they don’t show live.
Take out the incessant ad breaks that Ch10 used to play and we’re probably used to seeing only 75 minutes per race anyway, so no big deal!
I went through the woes of getting Fox when the AFL sold out, and Foxtel is a lot better now than it was way back then over 10 years ago. I’m pretty sick of the contempt Ch10 has shown the F1 audience (and Ch9 before it) so this move to Fox gets my vote.
Fox does a pretty good job with the WRC and WEC as well. Then there’s the AFL and EPL, tennis and more. I have plenty of reasons to sign up. 😛
Well that’s disappointing .. I sincerely hope that the Foxtel coverage is advertisement free in line with the SkySports coverage. It was always laughable when Rusty said that SkySports were taking an Ad break.. I’d still rather pay SkySports directly.
I’m curious about the WRC coverage on Foxtel too, wondering if it’s only complete stages or do they offer the 30min highlight reel like SBS/SC10 used to..
@Adam
WRC doesn’t lend itself too well to live TV but selected events do have some live coverage, usually it’s the top 10 over a single stage packaged into a 30 min program.
From memory Fox Sports’ WRC coverage usually goes like this…
Preview show – 30 mins (broadcast a few days prior to the event)
Day 1 – 30 min highlights (broadcast before next day of competition)
Day 2 – 30 min highlights (as above)
Day 3 – 30 min live stage if applicable
Day 3 – 30 min highlights (within 24 hours of event finish)
Highlights show – 60 mins (within a day or two of the rally end)
@Liam
That’s perfect really, and similar to what SBS used to do before it went to SC10.. Thanks for that, it has added fuel for thought..
Cheers.
I don’t have Foxtel as we are not TV people and we have young kids that keeps is busy. But today I called Telstra to have the $60 package mentioned above installed next month after AGP. I don’t blame 10 or Foxtel, but I sure blame Bernie. POS.
Well this explained why 10s ‘big event motorsport’ ad campaign didn’t mention every F1 round live. I should have seen the signs. Channel 10 is rotten. They have been rotting from the inside out for a long time.
“10 is the home of (the term you are looking for ‘motorsport’ has been removed from roster)”
Who remembers the Ch10 grid walk at the AGP where they spoke to B-grade celebrities instead of, you know, actual F1 people, and asked stupidly embarassing questions. Fun times!
[…] to the recent news that Australian-based Formula 1 fans can now only see a full season of live races on pay television has been mixed. Those critical of that decision won’t be at all surprised to learn that […]
Adam & Liam – that WRC coverage is what the rights holder puts out. It probably wouldn’t be any different regardless of who was showing it.
The worst bit in this for people only on FTA is that Ten will be overlaying their own commentary for the Australian GP 😮
@Dave
I’m not pretending Fox does anything over and above what the promoter provides. Sadly, the point is, you can only see the WRC on Fox. Well, sadly for those of you who don’t have Fox.
Mind, anything that helps you avoid commercial FTA and the tripe this it serves up for “entertainment” is worth paying for in my books, haha.
that sucks. I have no interest in Foxtel
I think the comments about 10’s coverage are harsh, they showed every race and quali live, linked up with JA gave us the UK commentary etc.
this is bad news.
