Vote for the 10 best Le Mans cars of all-time

Ford GT40

Next year marks the 90th running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Race organiser, Automobile Club de l’Ouest (the ACO), is running a poll allowing people to vote for their favourite cars from each decade, starting with the 1920s and running right through to the current day.

You get a choice of three cars from each decade and for your troubles you’ll be in with a chance to win the major prize, which includes a pair of pitwalk passes to the 2013 race and more.

Follow the source links below for full details and to cast your votes.

I think the selections are pretty well right on right up to the end of the 1980s, some truly legendary cars in each of the decades that easily stood out.

For the 1990s, I thought that the McLaren F1-GTR, Porsche 911 GT1 and Toyota TS020 (all omitted) would have been more worthy than the Mazda Group C car even if the Toyota didn’t manage to get a win. I selected the BMW, deserving for winning the most hotly-contested race ever with so many manufacturers entering factory-supported teams and beginning the return to pure prototypes after so many years of faux GT cars with spurious road versions.

The Aston Martin DBR9 and Corvette C5R/C6-R would be better selections for the 2000-2010 era than the two diesel LMP1 cars, they were the dominant cars in the old LMGT1 class despite having to fight for their wins, something the diesel cars didn’t need to worry about. The Audi R8 would also be a worthy inclusion there, for being so successful that they had to tweak so many rules to even give other teams a chance on paper (the Adrian Newey award, I believe it should be termed).

It would have been better if it was divided up into groups of ten races, rather than giving a whole decade to the 1940s when there was only one race! If you did that, you end up with a better split of the groups into the different types of cars – going backwards you would have the diesel era with the legendary LMGT1 battles further down (2003-12), the GT1/LMP era (1993-2002), Group C (1983-92), early prototypes (1973-82), late classic GT racers (1963-72), early classic GT (1953-62), vintage (1933-52) and pioneer cars (1923-32).
