Volkswagen Golf GTI concept en route to Paris

VW Golf VII GTI spied at the Nurburgring

Autocar brings word we should expect the next-generation GTI, or at least a near production-ready concept, at the Paris Motor Show next month. The info was tucked away at the end of their article on the new Golf VII:

“At the Paris motor show on 27 September, Volkswagen plans to preview the new Golf GTI. It receives a new 222bhp version of the Audi developed EA888 turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder direct injection petrol engine.”

You’ll note today’s guess on power is 222bhp, or around 165kW. That figure has been around since speculation on the Golf VII GTI began. However, we’ve also had suggestions as high as 195kW, which remain dubious about.

Looks like we won’t have to wait long to find out.

I think 165kw would be right. VW haven’t really increased power on their Golf GTI so dramatically for a while. To go from 155kw to 195kw would be a massive hike of 40kw. I just don’t see them doing that especially without adding some sort of mechanical limited slip diff (which they won’t). Also a 195kw GTI would take away a lot of thunder from their current Scirocco R which is 188kw. A 165kw GTI would still be plenty fast. It will most definitely be lighter than a Focus ST (184kw). What I would like to see is a jump in torque from 280nm to something around the 320 to 340nm mark. Anyway I guess we will all find out on the 27th when the new GTI is revealed.
