2012 European Grand Prix

Fernando Alonso is fast becoming our favourite driver not going by the name of Mark Webber. His ability to continually put his car in a winning position—see Valencia and Malaysia—when the quality of his machinery has often not been deserving of such results is genuine Spanish grit. He has guts. We like that.

You may or may not share our view on Alonso, but we suspect you’ll enjoy the 100 photos of the European Grand Prix we have assembled on your behalf.

I want to like Alonso. I really do. But his attitude that winning Formula 1 should not be a game of chance and that there should be some predictability to the winnings and standings really turns me off. See “Alonso: F1 runs risk of losing credibility” http://edition.cnn.com/2012/05/31/sport/motorsport/motorsport-f1-ferrari-alonso/index.html.
I think that this season of F1 has a tremendous field of talent, both on and off track, and the parade of winners thus far is partly a result of that. When everyone is running 100%, it is going to be the outside forces that dictate the day. Luck, if you will. We Yanks like to call it, “Any given Sunday”.
Did Alonso win in Valencia because he had a better platform, team, and strategy? Maybe. But if Vettel and Hamilton didn’t have any bad luck on Sunday, Alonso certainly wouldn’t have had any at all.
